Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.

This was our first stop on our tour on our first day. We came early to stand in line as the line gets long during the azalea festival. The azaleas were pretty and the shrine was nice as well.

If you have the chance to be in Tokyo in the month of April, then visiting the Nezu shrine is a must. During this period the 3000 Azalea bushes are in full bloom, an occasion well celebrated at the Nezu Shrine. Otherwise, the shrine is beautiful as well!

A beautiful shrine that deserves to be higher on visitors' travel destinations. Mostly frequented by locals, the red torii gates are striking.

Although located in the heart of the city, it is a quiet historical space. Although it is close at hand, it is a 300-year-old wooden structure built in the 1700s. It is not as lively as Sensoji Temple, but this quietness is a good thing.
You don't have to go to Fushimi Inari in Kyoto to see the Senbon Torii (Thousand Torii Gate) at Nezu Shrine. It is a little higher than the main shrine, so it looks very nice looking up.
In spring, the shrine is famous for its azaleas, and there is a big festival called the Azalea Festival. At that time, there is a big festival called "Tsutsuji Matsuri" (azalea festival), which is a lively event with street vendors and portable shrines. Secretly, during the cherry blossom season, there are also a few cherry trees, making it a hidden spot.

If you need a break from Tokyo's bustling streets, Nezu Shrine is the perfect spot to spend a few minutes to recharge.
The shrine grounds' most prominent feature is a collection of torii gates in the western part. Thanks to that you don't have to travel all the way to Kyoto's famous Fushimi Inari Taisha to enjoy walking through torii gates. Just visit Nezu Shrine and have a relaxing walk through this charming part of Tokyo downtown.
Definitely a recommendation from us at BROs IN JAPAN!

As always, at the end of sakura season we look for more blossoms when we return to Ueno/Tokyo.
In 2019 we went to the Tsutsuji-matsuri (Azalea Festival) at Nezu Jinja. The festival included food stalls, souvenir stalls, games, a Taiko drum performance, dance performances (including an elderly Japanese women’s dance troupe doing Hawaiian dances!!!) and, of course, there were the azaleas. Last autumn we visited the shrine with a Japanese TripAdvisor friend who told us to be sure to return to the shrine in early May. He was right!
The shrine has some 3000 azalea plants and 100 different varieties. The monks were very smart when they planted the shrubs years ago. The shrine has an ancient history, is 1900 years old, and is very photogenic in its own right, but it is off the main tourist track even though we have seen it described as “Tokyo’s most beautiful Shinto shrine.” In the autumn we were the only people there when we visited.
Come spring, azaleas reign. We arrived early and the line for entrance to the the garden was long, but not impossible. By the time we left in mid-afternoon, the line was about ¼ mile long snaking its way through the temple grounds and all the way out onto the main street.

I went very early in the morning and it was wonderful. Only about 3 people were there at the time and it was a great experience. From the Tori lined paths to the koi pond, it was everything that you would expect from a well-known temple like this.

Hi I will be arriving in 3rd week of May this year. Will the azaleas still be in bloom? Thank you in advance.

I don't think so. The Azalia Festival at the Nezu Shrine is until april 30th.
How long of an activity would it typically take to explore all of what Nezu has to offer? Need to know as I'm making my itinerary for early May. Thanks in advance.

To late to answer your question, but for the next travellers: Nezu shrine is like 5 minut from Nezu station by walk (or 25 -30 min walk from Ueno) and its garden in full bloom takes about an hour to explore. My recommendation is to walk further to the Yanaka old shopping district. Around are some cool small temples (but historically important, one has holes from bullets in its door from civil war) and a huge Yanaka cemetery.

Hi!
The shrine is always open. They only charge a fee to walk inside the azalea garden when the plants are in bloom.
Not sure if there will still be blooms when you arrive but you can always visit. You might be lucky and still catch some bloons.

Hi! The shrine does not close but if you want to walk in the garden with the azaleas, you have to see the Azalea Festival schedule for 2019. The garden opens at 9AM during the festival.
