The precincts are very quiet, even though there are frequent trains coming and going right next to it

As Nippori Station is right in front of the temple, you can hear the sound of trains coming and going, but it's so quiet that it seems as if it's coming from somewhere far away. Perhaps it is because of the quietness of the temple precincts, but the lotus plants and buildings (especially the shape of the windows) in various parts of the temple grounds create a kind of paradise atmosphere. The size of precincts are only takes about 10 minutes to walk around. The main feature of the temple is the seated statue of Amitabha Buddha. There is a stone slope between the gate and the temple grounds to make it easier for people with disabilities such as wheelchairs to use the temple, but be aware that it can be slippery on rainy days. Also, the road outside the gate is narrow and intricate, so pedestrians and bicyclists need to be aware of the possibility of accidents.

Neighbourhood: Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.

We walked to this Temple through the cemetery. It was quiet, they had some beautiful statues and buildings. There were almost no people there, which I enjoyed after being in some very crowded areas. It is smaller than other major temples in Tokyo, but I still enjoyed it.

This is a gem of a temple at the back of Yanaka Cemetery and across the road from Nippori Station.

It is really peaceful and has a lovely bronze buddha along with a number of other beautiful monuments.

I think it is often overlooked so doesn't get a great many tourists, so it really is a smashing place to visit.

The temple complex is vast and filled with peace & positive energy. The main shrine houses a statue of Buddha depicting his journey to enlightenment on walls as paintings. It’s pond is full of turtles 🐢 reminding you of Feng shui.

Light a candle n say a silent prayer as you soak in the positive vibes!

I stumbled upon this beautiful temple accidentally in 2011 and have been revisiting it every time I'm in Japan. Tennoji Temple is very small but houses an amazing Daibutsu statue. During spring you can enjoy some very nice cherryblossom trees and onigawara too. If you're looking for a peaceful temple without hordes of tourists this is the place you should visit. It is truly a hidden gem.

Nice little temple, for the beginning of your Yanesen walking tour. You can see the bronze buddha statue the moment you enter. It was very quiet, no tourists (besides me!) & little locals too.

Equally nice to any other good temple, but it's in a quiet neighbourhood, it's not touristy, even locals didn't really show up there.

This is a pleasant, quiet temple near the cemetery. Not many people around. The architecture is quite interesting.

I visited a number of temples in Yanaka and they were all gorgeous - Tennoji was no exception! A really beautiful spot that is well worth a visit when you're in Yanaka. Only takes 10 minutes to walk around the temple grounds & soak it all in.

This Buddhist Temple sits on the edge of the Yanaka Cemetery and dates back to 1274 It is located in a pleasant garden behind an old wooden gate. It the grounds is a bronze Buddhist statue that that dates back to 1690 and was referred to by locals as Tennoji Daibutsu. Well worth a stop by if you are in Yanaka Cemetery or Nippori. it is only a short walk from Nippori Station
