Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.

This is a small museum and it was hard to find. When we finally did find it, I found it too warm inside and we didn't stay long.

This beautiful tenement museum pays hommage to historical Japanese life. There are many parts that are interactive and truly allow you to immerse yourself into the late 19th century, early 20th century. The cons while there are some signs labeled in English, many of the captions my translation app was unable to decipher so I was left to use my imagination as to what I was experiencing. Overall it was a great stop off after the zoo.

This museum highlighted how Tokyo was before its modern expansion. We had an excellent guide in English, who took his time to really explain in detail how people lived. It was wonderful.

The museum recreates a shimatachi street during Edo period; great learning experience; and short enough not to get overwhelmed....

We went with my 9 year old grand daughter on a terribly raining miserable day.
It saved the day for us. The guide in English told us so many wonderful things about living in Japan 100 years ago and taught Maeve how to pray at a shrine, which we did later! After gleamingly new Tokyo, learning about the old days was awesome.
The second floor was self guided and included many Japanese toys from 100 years ago. My grand daughter played for well overrun hour with the choices and had a ball.
Also upstairs were exhibitions from the early 20th century providing insights into the earthquake of 1924 and bombing of WW 2 that devastated the area. On a miserable weather day, our trip to the museum made this a memorable morning and afternoon.

This museum was a highlight of our trip. They offer a tour in English and our tour guide was wonderful. You get to see how the Japanese lived and worked in the 1920s. They also explain a lot of customs that people still practice today. We learned a lot and really enjoyed the exhibits.

There is a small admission fee to pay & enter. However, there was an English speaking Japanese tour guide that made this experience memorable. She was patient & provided us with an in-depth interactive history lesson. It may be a small place but it is well worth a visit.

We were staying in Ueno and decided to visit this small museum. We were not expecting much but on arrival we were offered a tour in English and this was wonderful. We were able to see things in the houses that we might have overlooked and were given a real insight into how people lived before this area of Tokyo was modernised. I would thoroughly recommend.

As already mentioned, you should consider allowing at least one hour; however if you decide to read all the details of the displayed events on the second floor, it can easily take two hours. First floor is more displays while second floor is displays with history details. Overall, this is a relatively small museum. Enjoy!
