The area
Neighbourhood: Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.

    Carvings and gold leaf
A very impressive shrine in Ueno Park. You have to pay an entrance fee to get inside the gates but it's absolutely worth it in my opinion. There's a platform where you can take a rest while looking at the beautiful old camphor tree. The carvings of the gate, fence and shrine building are stunning. Highly recommended.

    上野東照宮@Ueno Park
The previous time we were here in 2018 the place was closed for renovation. This trip we were glad it was opened and so formed part of out Ueno Park visit, on a Thursday early afternoon in late-Nov 23.. The renowned Shrine was listed as a National Treasure and was constructed in 651, dedicated to the shogun Tokugawa leyasu. Subsequently a second Toshogu Shrine was located in Nikko and both were built by leyasu's grandson. I have not been to Nikko one but its famed as reached must-visit status. 😊 Not difficult to find there were well crafted out path with stone lanterns leading to the shrine. The Shrine is famous for its decorated structures, the carvings of the gate & fence are stunning, not often we encountered such beauty after visiting close to 100 shrines (and reviewing them) over the past years! The pillars of the gate are decorated with two carved dragons, from google we noted that they are known as Noboriryu (Ascending Dragon) and Kudariryu (Descending Dragon), Quite a spacious premise with trees that blossom with differing seasons. Popular souvenirs among tourists from the shrine include charms for good luck, happiness, love or longevity and amulets. Many visitors come to the shrine to pray for good fortune, such as passing examinations, longevity, and recovery from illness. For us we were here more to simply admire the characteristics & beauty of traditional Japanese architecture, took lotsa of photos too. We made some quick prayers for a safe trip home & left. A good experience & trip for us all.

Nice gold shrine in Ueno, the fee may not be worth it unless you want to escape the crowds
The outer shrine was extremely crowded and the path to it lined with food stalls and tables, which made it a very cramped entrance. The outer shrine is nice. We paid to go into the inner shrine (although you can't go inside the building). It's impressive with the gold leaf but it was pricey compared to other more impressive/larger shrines. I don't regret paying to go in as there were hardly any other people which was a relief, but it was very a small.

The shrine is located in Ueno Onshi Park. Ueno Onshi Park is crowded with people mainly on holidays, but except for the year-end and New Year holidays and the Peony Festival held at Botan-en, the area around the shrine is relatively quiet and there are not many people coming and going. The golden hall of worship is a distinctive feature of the shrine, but strangely enough, it doesn't give off an ostentatious impression; it just sits there.
The only area that is always open to visitors is the approach from the torii gate to the main shrine building, which is only about 100 meters long, so it only takes about 10 minutes to visit the shrine and walk around the grounds. The Botan-en is also open only when the peonies are in bloom, and is closed to visitors during the rest of the year.
Perhaps because of the large number of foreign visitors, all the information is written in Japanese and English. Some of the information is only available in English.

This is a Toshogu, which is dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of Edo shogunate. Although this one is not so famous as a Toshogu in Nikko, the beauty of the main building deserves attention. There is a garden of peony, but it requires the entrance fee.

Sadly, after the restoration they felt the need to GREATLY increase the number of gift shops in this relatively small space. The shrine is beautiful and worth a visit. But literally you can count every two or three steps there’s stacks of wood paintings, rice wine, key rings, toys and other cheap knick-knacks they are trying to sell you. There’s even a full shop in the main shrine at the top. It’s really way too commercial now and tacky. It wasn’t like this at all when I visited ten years ago. Makes it hard to focus on the shrine.

Well worth a visit even though there wasn’t any flowers really out. It’s a quiet and peaceful place and found the whole area somewhere to just chill out and soak up Japan. A photographers dream.
Wheelchair accessible and stroller friendly. Kids will enjoy this place as well. Really enjoyed the surrounding temple, the copper lanterns and all the beautiful offerings.

Ueno Park in itself is amazing! The shrine is not to be missed, it marks the first shogun place of remembrance and for us it was a true wow factor as we had visited the last shogun’ shrine in Yanaka which did not have the glamour as the 1st shogun shrine. so many things to do in this area, plan to spend tons of time. We started our walk through the park, the shrine and may our way down beautiful paths that brought us to Asakusa and the famous Senso-ji. Amongst the area is a multitude of coils streets packed with shops, restaurants. Just crazy stuff and so much fun!

This is a must stop temple if you visiting Nikko. I only give 4 star as i think the entrance fee is a bit high. But i feel Kyoto temple have a better view.

The gold-leaf doors, alone, are worth the visit . . . and the original (not reconstructed) buildings are beautifully preserved.
