The area

Neighbourhood: Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.

This might be a stellar gallery at other times, but there wasn’t much on when we were there. There was a ticketed exhibition, which we didn't want to pay for as we didn't have much time. And apart from that, most of the building seemed closed. We did ask for directions to more galleries and were told they were between exhibitions, so we wandered around a bit and then left.

Lots of oil paintings, no sculptured art. I am giving this 5/5 because it is beautiful for those who enjoy this sort of art. It is not for me but I recognize the beauty for what it is.

The "museum hill" in Tokyo is a real experience in itself--the place is mobbed on a holiday (which is when we were there). By all means, take a cab there/back because the subway is hopelessly packed--so full it was actually funny (in a sad sort of way) to see all the passengers packed into the cars. Although we were told the subway system is good (but a bit confusing) we never did give it a try because of our limited time in Tokyo. We found the cabs to be so much more civilized! By the way, most of them take credit cards--unlike so many other places in Japan that only want Yen.

The museum is a beautiful building that is easy to find when you get to the hill. Sad to say, the museum only has rotating exhibitions. We like a museum to have a collection of its own to get a sense for what their staff is able to collect assemble. It is also good to have the permanent collection as a fall back if the exhibition is not "up to snuff" or too crowded at the time you are there. NOT the case here. Make certain you read the reviews of the exhibition to make certain it is in your interest sphere!

This is in Ueno Park and close to Ueno Zoo.
Most of its collection was moved to Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo in Kiba Park.
It might be right to call it an art center, which leases its rooms or galleries to art groups or schools in Tokyo and which plans its special exhibitions.
I often visit this, and I think Its special exhibitions are usually interesting and rich.
Today's exhibition was Foujita: A Retrospective - Commemorating the 50th anniversary of his Death.
Check it up and enjoy!

We were very impressed with the location of this museum within Ueno Park which houses several other museums plus a Zoo all within a gorgeous park with temples and I'm very sure very pretty cherry blossoms and florals based on the season. The museum itself is located on the far side of the park beside the Zoo, several paths may lead to the establishment based on several park maps situations throughout. I was surprised when the staff informed us that the museum did not have a permanent collection and only exhibited external collections of which key masterpieces from the Boston MFA was the showcase over our visit. It's probably unfair to say that I was underwhelmed by the exhibit but that's really based on our extensive international museum and gallery experiences including the Boston MFA. The museum was filled with locals to which I'm sure this collection was a big deal. The Boston MFA pieces were in fact a huge deal including works of Monet, Renoir, Degas, Georgia O'Keeffe, and pieces from the largest international Japanese art collection. However, the magnitude of the collection didn't shed a light to what we were used to seeing. A visit to Ueno park and the museum is a must. The museum's collection is totally dependent on timing of your visit. It's also worth spending time checking out all the other museums and just enjoying the park itself.

The Van Gogh and Gauguin exhibit is worth the visit. A collection of 65 pieces. However, it ends in December 2016. The museum is rather small. I was not able to go to the National Museum though. Compared to the Art museums in New York, this is about the same size as the Guggenheim.

To start off, the main portion of this museum is free to visit, so there really isn't a reason for you to not go. There is no permanent exhibit here, so going back again after the exhibits rotate out is also reasonable.

A few months before the school year ends, the entire first floor is full of student final project from local design and art universities in Tokyo. Some of these pieces include graphic design and mixed media as well. I promise there will be piece that grab a hold of you; you won't be able to take your eyes off them.

Other exhibits include traditional Indian ink paintings, Japanese calligraphy, and, presently, an Italian exhibit.

We went to this museum at the end of the day and most in my group were tired and wet. I found the museums buildings beautiful, some were old and some were new. We visited the permanent Japane exhibit which I found fascinating. I enjoyed looking at the old kimonos and the remnants of scolls. I wish that I had had more time to explore the grounds and the other museum buildings. I had a translator with me so it was easy to follow the exhibits and ask questions when I didn't understand something. I would strongly suggest that if you have the time, spend an afternoon here.

Been here 4 times, they never disappoint. This time there was a Klimmt exhibition, which was very busy but definitely worth it. They always try to find a link with Japan is there is one, which adds depth. Be prepared for the crowds though and if you don't think the Japanse can be rude, come here on a busy day.

I was visiting Ueno Park and discovered one of the museums here - this one - was having an Edvard Munch exhibition. Paid for a rather expensive ticket, went to the exhibition and thoroughly enjoyed myself. Not sure about the regular exhibits as I did not visit them.
