Neighbourhood: Shibuya / Harajuku / Ebisu
There are countless opportunities to shop in the Shibuya and Harajuku districts, especially in shops that focus on Japan's "Kawaii" culture. The trendiest areas are around Shibuya’s Center district, Harajuku's Takeshita-dori and in Omotesando. If you need to recharge from all the shopping, you can easily refresh yourself in Meiji Jingu or Sasaki Park. In contrast, Ebisu has a more grown up ambiance of calm and cool. At the Museum of Yebisu Beer you can learn about the beer that was responsible for the town’s name, and enjoy dining at the popular noodle shops in the surrounding area.

On this day, a Yebisu beer garden was held! You can enjoy various types of Yebisu beer. The glasses given to you at the entrance can be taken home for 650 yen each - it's convenient and you can also buy souvenir glasses, so it was a very nice event. When it gets dark, the surrounding area is lit up beautifully, so I recommend it.

Love this place especially the trek from Ebisu station as it offers a different view of modern Tokyo. The Illumination and the chandelier are worth visiting and best to visit this at night. Ebisu is also very accessible from Shibuya.

The lively atmosphere made it a great place to visit. The lights at night in Ebisu Garden Place were really beautiful. I had a glass of Ebisu beer. It was smooth and rich, perfect for the atmosphere. The shopping mall has beautiful and impressive architecture.

Coming from the train station, on our way to the Westin hotel, we fell in Ebidu Garden place. I doubt we’d check this area out if we weren’t staying in the neighborhood. Nice architecture and stores and of course, eating establishments. Nice area to walk around.

Hate to date myself, but I can remember what Ebisu was like before Garden Place was built (mostly ramen shops, izakaya, local shopping street and a famous pool hall). After Garden Place was built, (for better or for worse) Ebisu suddenly underwent a complete transformation and suddenly became "upscale" and "trendy." Now that the "newness" of Garden Place has long worn off, it still has "shine" but without the crowds.
Make sure to check out the Beer Museum located in Garden Place which celebrates the history of the area. Ebisu originally got its start when a brewery was founded in the area in the 1920s and Ebisu grew up around it. "Yebisu" is now one brand of the Sapporo line of beers and you can learn all about it and of course "taste" all about it by visiting the museum.
Also, check out the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography located here as well. In addition to the permanent collection, there are always several exhibitions going on here. Each exhibition will have a separate price so make sure ask at the desk.
Ebisu Garden Cinema closed in January 2011. It was an independent movie theater which showed some really wonderful films. However, one Garden Place cinematic tradition lives on---every summer in the middle of Garden Place a movie screen and seats are set up outside and after the sun goes down the movie starts!! Every night is something different and you can plan ahead by picking up one of the summer movie festival brochures or looking at poster info as well. And the best part is that it's free. But you have to get there early if you want to actually sit down.
On the far south side of Garden Place is the Westin Hotel. So, if you are looking for a ritzy place to stay, you might want to consider this hotel. Or if you are looking for a ritzy place to drink, visit "The Compas Rose" which is on one of the top floors of this hotel and affords a wonderful night view of Tokyo.
In the middle of Garden Place, in the building across from Mitsukoshi (department store) is a tall building called "Ebisu Garden Place Tower." There are several good places to eat here, but I'd like to recommend "Chibo" which is on the 38 floor. You can't come all the way to Japan without trying okonomiyaki (a pancake-like dish) at least once and "Chibo" is a well known Osaka-style okonomiyaki chain so you can't go wrong here. This place is popular. So, go early.
There is a BIG wonderful wine shop at Garden Place called WINE & PARTY. They have a great selection and can please every taste and budget (if you've got extra yen to spare, go all the way to the back of the store to the cooler. Inside the cooler room is where they keep the expensive stuff).
If you haven't yet had a chance to check out an "upscale Japanese grocery store," go to the bottom floor of Mitsukoshi and you'll find everything from fancy box lunches to BBQ eel awaiting you.
There are lots of little boutques and places to eat here and (most important of all)----lots of wide open spaces to walk around, free of the crowds you'd find in Shibuya (next station over from Ebisu).

With Ebisu JR Station on one end and a walking escalator taking you to the Westin Hotel at the other end this is a great area to chill out in an upscale Tokyo neighbourhood, with chic eateries here and there, as at Brick End, and the museum of Yebisu Beer (complete with representative brew).

Ebisu Garden Place is attached to the Ebisu JR station and is accessible by pedestrian tunnels and walkways. It is a good place on a great day and a great place on a rainy or snowy day. There are a number of interesting places to eat in the basement of the office tower, some very touristy restaurants on the 39th floor to be avoided, an excellent department store with a great food selection for urban picnicking, lots of places to sit, and a few bakeries for coffee and croissants if you need that. This is an open and welcoming area of Tokyo that is close to Ebisu and its nightlife so can be a good combo destination.

Apart from the TOP Photographic Art Museum there is a lot Yebisu Garden offered when I was there shortly before X-mas.
First of all there was a nice market place selling all kinds of local and rural products.
Secondly at the day I was there, there was a Gospel Chior Festival taking place, which produced some very nice music by various gospel choirs the whole day through.
And of course there was the always present X-mas chandelier, X-mas lighting in the surrounding trees as well as the beautiful decorated X-mas tree.
All in all a lot to see and experience within a very confined and beautiful location.
Yebisu remains one of my most favourite areas to visit in Tokyo during the X-mas period although this time I was there only during daytime so I missed out on the winter illuminations.

The view of Tokyo at night was one of the most gorgeous sights that I've seen. Unfortunately there is no outdoor patio to get unobstructed views, but the views through the windows are still fantastic.

This place is a spacious and beautiful place to visit. It is a 5 min skyline walk from Ebisu station. There were many restaurants and cafe inside and outside of the Tower. Nice sky lounge on the 38th floor and you can overlook the city of Tokyo.(it is free!) There was a beer fest going on at the terrace and it was very lively. This place is for adults than young people and I really enjoyed the atmosphere.
