- SophiaKAthens, Greece1,184 contributionsThe guardian temple of FukuokaWe visited Kushida shrine, one of the oldest shrines in Hakata during a religious event. Families with young children were attending the religious event and a lot of locals and visitors were paying their respects. We washed our hands in the purification fountain, and we “tried” our future with the “omikuji” the little fortune white papers in many languages, for a few yen. After we read them we folded them in the near by tree.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 January 2024

I got my fortune slip. 100 yen. It says childbirth will be difficult. I’m in my 60’s. Anyway - it’s well worth the tiny detour.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 April 2024

We had to dodge the showers and occasional downpours to view aspects of the shrine. It's a Shinto shrine that was founded in 757 and dedicated to Amaterasu and Susanoo, two mythical deities of the Japanese imperial line. We probably breached etiquette on a number of occasions as we tried to dodge the heavier showers. The reisen surrounded by three cranes is reputed to grant longevity and eternal youth to those who drink from it. Too late for us oldies. The festive floats, both static and portable, were very colourful and well presented. A guide would have been very helpful in explaining the significance of the various memorials and monuments through.

Visited Kushida Shrine during our past trip to Japan as it was part of our guided tour. The shrine is big and pretty to walk around. The festival float displayed is huge and so intricately designed. It's interesting that this huge shrine is right amongst residential buildings.

This was listed in Itineraries as it was highly recommended by most of the travelers who traveled to Fukuoka. Though I find this place small and the area seems to be concentrated to the shrine itself ... all I can say is how I greatly appreciate the aesthetics of this temple. Very nice and indeed would be ok to include it indeed in your places to visit when in Fukuoka.

Right off the Kawabata Shopping / Pedestrian Street is the Kushida Shrine. Not a very big shrine but if you are in the area, it's worth a quick look. Just don't expect too much. It is right between the Nakasukawabata and Gion subway stations right in the heart of Fukuoka.

The shrine is located near the Canal City shopping mall. You can stop by after visiting the mall. It is not far from the station and has convenient transportation. It is a very unique shrine. The "Yamakasa" near the entrance is worth visiting and taking photos.

Came here for Lunar New Year prayer and blessings. This shrine is dedicated to Hakata Gion Yamakasa God. Absolutely beautiful and highly recommended to visit.
Don’t forget to see the back and front of the huge Yamakasa on display when you enter the shrine.

While strolling through Kamikawabata Shopping Street from Nakasu-Kawabata Station, I arrived at the shrine without getting lost. The decorations for the pre-Setsubun festival had already begun. There were magnificent floats and a Hakata feel to them. Just then, the prayer service began, and the sound of the koto and the chanting of the chief priest were a delight to the ears. I received a goshuin (red seal) and walked around the shrine to see the Inari shrine, the teahouse, and the magnificent Nishikigoi carp. I was especially surprised by the signboard displaying the donations. The love for Hakata Dontaku is incredible.

This is an interesting one right between commercial and residential blocks. Small compound with enough things to see while taking a break from the walking.

How to go to kushida Shrine from our hotel,Apa hotel fukuoka watanabedori ekimae?
Written 26 July 2017
You can reach the shrine from the hotel by walking along the river toward Canal City direction. The shrine is on the other side of Canal City buildings. The distance is about 1km.
