This was within 5 minutes walking distance from our hotel, and we visited during the New Year’s holiday. It is an active temple complex and filled with worshippers. It was an inspiring time to visit, and I kept my photo-taking very low key, avoiding taking photos of anyone engaged in prayer.

The Sumiyoshi Shrine in Hakata is perfect because it is understated, just like the city of Fukuoka itself.

Fabulous gardens complete with relaxing scenery are complimented by vivid red gates which mark the entrance. Visit on a sunny weekday afternoon or a mild evening and you will be treated to some of the most peaceful surroundings in the whole city. It is tranquil, calming and restful - spend a few minutes in this beautiful location and you will not be disappointed.

The Sumiyoshi Shrine is just a ten minute walk from Hakata train station.

The grandest entry way leading to the shrines entrance of the temples/shrines that I visited.

Very well maintained with great gardens surrounding.

It was early morning when I arrived, about 9, and it was very quiet.

Easy walk from Grand Hyatt.

Located within 5 minute walk from Watanabedori Subway Station. Very beautiful shrine with small koi pond. A great getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city.

A peaceful park type shrine in the middle of the city. Well worth a quiet wander. Caught the tail end of a wedding and sumo wrestlers finishing up.

This nice shrine doesn't look extraordinary, but it must be. We saw a Shinto infant 'baptism' (miyamairi) and a couple having wedding photos taken. On some days, there are sumo wrestling matches.

This shrine is located in the downtown of Fukuoka. It's calm and quite peaceful. Aside from the toriis, shrines and statues, unfortunately, there were no more special 'attractions' there. Stopping by the shrine very late on the day and found there was a renovation work just in front of its main gate. Hence, I was feeling not so impressed with my visit that time. By the way, it's around 15 minutes by walk from Hakata station, hence it's very easy to get to this shrine.

Really pleasant place to walk with the trees granting loads of shade in the heat of the day. There is a mystical quality at dusk. U fortunately, most signs are only Japanese, so learning about the place is difficult, but it's still worthwhile to walk through.

It's free, and people even ride their bikes along the dirt paths on their way Elsewhere.

There is a place to buy trinkets, but it was closed both times I was there.
