Affordable items abound at this shopping center. There are also multiple places to eat. One needs not to purchase anything to enjoy the place, though. A walk through the center is equally enjoyable.

As the oldest shopping district in Fukuoka, the Kawabatori shopping street boasts itself with both novelty and traditional Japanese items. Shopping for low to high priced souvenirs is just a breeze when you decide to shop here as stores are just lined up at both sides. If you get hungry, you can drop by at restaurants inside. The Kushida Shrine and the Canal City, both popular tourist spots in Fukuoka, are walking distance from it. Commuting is also easy as it is near the Nakasu-Kawabata station.

Covered shopping arcades are not unusual in Japan. In my experience, they are often filled with fashionable shops, fast food outlets and chain coffee shops. However, kawabatadori is different. It has a very local feel. There are lots of religious shops, tea shops and shops which sell local food delicacies. In addition to this, there are some glitzy dress shops for the Nakasu girl, some more sedate shops for the grandmas, as well as the odd hip hop store thrown in.
Udon and ramen shops, too.
It leads onto Canal City and Kushida Jinja. Also accessible by subway, bus or a nice stroll from Tenjin or Hakata.
It's quite a local experience.

This is a traditional shopping arcade just like those in many other Japanese cities. There are around 100 over stores ranging from apparel, floral, drug store, specialty stores and quite a lot of restaurants. We had very fresh chirashi don in one of the restaurants and enjoyed freshly made soya ice cream. We found a shop selling beautiful Japanese chinaware and we got some teapots and cups. One end of the arcade is at Nakasu-Kawabata Station and the other end is at the Canal City Shopping Mall. If high-end shopping is not what you are looking for, this place is worth a visit.

Visited this place when weather is pretty hot. It feels slightly stuffy as you walk through the roof covered street and had to start looking for a cafe (one available at the end of the street facing Takashimaya shopping mall). Bought some souvenirs at tax free stores. A lot of Buddhism shops, old schooled fashion, some massage. We stayed here for about 1 hour, visiting an owl store which is a fantastic experience. We mainly use this as a pass through to other locations - Unagi shop, train station to Ohori park and Ichiran Ramen HQ.

I love the traditional shotengai or covered shopping arcades. Kawabata shotengai is a very local place so the experience gives you a glimpse of how the locals live. So many shops selling everything from cosmetics, to clothes to furniture and even supplies for temples or your own altar. I always visit when I go to Fukuoka!

This shopping street is a nice, albeit short, shopping street that is conveniently located near Canal City Mall in Hakata and is certainly worth a visit. My wife and I found a few nice items, tea cups and green tea pot, for a decent value. Much of the items are somewhat overpriced, but values can be found. If you go early in the day, may of the restaurants are closed and there are fewer shoppers. After 5:00 P.M., the restaurants are open and the wafting aroma of food entices one to linger. The street is also very alive with people in the evening. We went during both times and enjoyed each.

The covered arcade is usual for Japan large cities. Kawabatadori Shopping arcade is short distance and running parallel to the canal. If you have experienced the Osaka shopping streets before, do not expect the same length and variaties.

This covered street is unusual in Japan, as it mainly contains small local shops, not big department stores and cafes as in other Japanese towns (like Kumamoto). It is very near Canal City (and a big contrast to it).

This is a covered shopping arcade that is pedestrians only. There are many shops and restaurants along the street. Don't expect to find high-street or high-fashion brands here (for that go to Canal City) but more local items.
