Huanglongxi is lovely. It is for tourists but still enjoyed it and bought some nice souvenirs. If you are in Chengdu, worth a visit.

We visited this place after Leshan Buddha. It’s quite a distant but worth the visit. Since you’re already in Chengdu, why not.

Yes it can get crowded but if you go early morning the crowds are not so bad.
That the buildings and structures over the stream are still as they were is a good part of its charm.
To see hundred of kids and families all in the stream playing with water pistols and just enjoying the area is great and while there are lots of traders and shops either side they are not pushy or bothering you as they do in some places.
The old buildings, bridges and stepping stones are really interesting.
Well worth a drive out there and a couple of hours to wander around.

Huanglongxi (yellow dragon brook or stream) seems to have been left behind by development and is reveling in it. At weekends this historic, almost Disneystyle, village seems to be packed, and it was as much fun looking at the masses of happy visitors, and kids playing with their water pistols, as it was looking at the waterwheel, the stream flowing down the main street and the extensive range of food and other stalls. Also fun was taking tea at the Chinese opera show, where acts run for as little as five minutes.

I enjoyed visiting this ancient town and especially seeing its older buildings and its older people. The town was founded about 2,000 years ago. It is becoming more commercialized, but likely to service the needs of sightseers.

Mmm ... really wouldn’t have missed anything much by not visiting this place, but it obviously appeals to many others. The Main Street is like a theme park, flanked by food and souvenir shops. It was good to find the untouched area on the edge of the village, where it was very quiet.

Not sure there’s much of the old town left but there is a working temple where you can light incense, see the yellow dragon and 1000 year old trees. The waterway with people squirting water guns makes the pathway you travel to / from the temple past all the street vendors wet and grubby. Vendor setup more authentic because of the old buildings than Jinli street. Worth a stop if you are going out to see the Leshan Giant Buddha as both are some distance from downtown Chengdu.

We visited this village as part of a day trip. While initially it appears quaint and interesting, there were several major issues with this. First of all, I was hounded incessantly for pictures by locals, at one point we had 5 local teens following us to take pictures of me. This was bearable, what wasn't bearable was when we got towards the amusement park area, I first noticed some baby bunnies in a basket. I then noticed that these were the lucky baby bunnies, the unlucky ones were actually in tiny metal cages being used as targets for a child's amusement park game! The baby rabbits looked starved and dehydrated, most likely had not been fed at all, not to mention terrified. These were apparently also being handed out as "prizes" to children. I almost vomited at this spectacle, and as we rushed quickly away, I saw another child walking around swinging a similar cage with a terrified parakeet in it (a small, intelligent member of the Parrot family), which tells me further on they were using parrots as targets in a similar game. This is completely unacceptable, uncivilized and disgusting. I also saw shops selling tiny globe necklaces with about 1 inch of water in them and live goldfish and turtles flopping around in them, these creatures will not live more than 24 hours in these "necklaces". Come on China, you can do better than this. Stay away.

This feels like Chinese Disneyland. There's nothing old left. The entire town has been renovated. It's essentially Jinli street in Chengdu. Shops selling the same things. There's even a Haagen Daz. Everything is manufactured and fake. When I went they were in the process of replacing the last of the older buildings. There was even a photo of what the new "old" building will look like when constructed.

Area is pretty but it's nothing you'd expect when you hear "ancient town". This place is essentially nothing but souvenir shops. It's a tourist trap. Such a shame they destroyed any sense of history and culture in this town. Avoid the trip from Chengdu. It's a waste of time.

About an hour drive from Chengdu, lots of old buildings, shops, restaurants, etc. we went on Friday, not crowded, probably due to low season now. We did this day tour together with Leshan Giant Buddha, quite a good place to relax and enjoy the tea.
