- AndreyTashkent, Uzbekistan64 contributionsMust visit place in Phuket. The views from the place with Big Buddha are absolutely amazing. You can look at Phuket town, Karon and Kata beaches and Southern part of Phuket island from the high altitude of Big Buddha place. We came to Big Buddha on our feet from Karon beach through jungle trial. It was not so easy after the rain. Be ready for some difficulties if you choose this way to reach Big Buddha.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 October 2023
- Atlanta H4 contributionsA view over paradiseThe views were incredible! You can’t currently enter the area under Buddha as it’s under construction. We went at dawn just after 0630 when it opened to enjoy the sunrise and avoid the heat of the day! It was far more enjoyable without the crowds too!!Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 November 2023
- Andrew BrookesNewcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom21 contributionsA must see in PhuketMe and my girlfriend went during sunset and it was really good. We did get a big of fog and rain at first but it cleared up and we had amazing views. We got a taxi to the top but you can walk it but it looks pretty brutal so if you're going to walk it be prepared for a hard journey up to the top because its long and steep. If you're in Phuket then this is a must see. Try and go on a clear day or during sunset or sunrise.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 November 2023
- SAINTLong Beach, California17 contributionsBig buddhaNice view.. After a long hike (or a quick buggy/motorbike/car ride), which takes you along a windy uphill road, bringing you along cafes with incredible views, you arrive at the Big Buddha. Climb some more steps to get to the top - and you’re there. The statue is much bigger than expected and is fascinating to look at. There are several interesting signs that explain the history of it, provide background facts, more signs that tell you about Buddhism etc.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 12 November 2023
- Robert DDubai, United Arab Emirates149 contributionsMust visit. Best views for sureI have been to Phuket many times and never made the effort to go see the Big Buddha. I was very impressed that we can literally drive up to the bottom of the Statue. So very little effort walking. The views were amazing. I only disliked the amount of donation boxes were everywhere for all kinds of purposes. Felt a big muchVisited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 14 November 2023
- Mili821Mumbai, India336 contributionsMesmerising placeBeautiful serene place. Buddha mantra chanting makes you feel very peaceful and calm. Its bit far from main city, but worth the visit. Beautiful views with majestic buddha statue. Walk around the statue gives a sense of calmness. There is also a possibility to seek blessings of monk. Total visit shouldn’t take more than 30-40mins. Overall a nice place to visit.Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 18 November 2023
- ChrisHo Chi Minh City, Vietnam288 contributionsWonderful viewsI have been to the big buddha many times. It is a nice place to walk around and relax. You can get blessed by a monk, admire the great views, and pray if that is your kind of thing. Ladies, please wear clothing that is suitable or you withh have to cover up. Watch out for the monkeys. They seem friendly but will steal anything they can grab. It's definitely worth a visit.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 November 2023
- Stefan GCork, Ireland80 contributionsImpressive Buddha and fab viewsLess strict for exposing legs than Bangkok sites such as the Grand Palace however it’s still expected to cover below the knee and shoulders. He is a pretty big Buddha! Lovely monument with great views from the top of the mountain you would likely have driven up. There are many other smaller statues to see also and an area where the monks will bless you and performing prayers. If catching a grab be aware you’ll likely need them to wait on you to return as taxis aren’t sitting up here, the good news is, at least for us is that our driver was happy to wait an hour for us to get around without charging us extra.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 November 2023
- SggolfSingapore, Singapore102 contributionsMajestic Big Buddha with stunning viewThe big buddha together with Wat chalong is something that you can't miss when in Phuket It a short walk from the car park to the Big buddha. Be respectful and please note shorts and singlets not allowed. The magnificent view from the top is stunning and breath taking. The big buddha is like eyeing on you no matter from which view. Beware of monkeys snatching your belongings when you are there.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 11 December 2023
- Maya JRBogota, Colombia2 contributionsWorth the visit, try to go early morning before its too hotWow, just wow! The Big Buddha in Phuket is even more impressive in person than the photos suggest. Standing at the base of this majestic white marble statue, gazing out at the endless ocean views, I felt a sense of peace and awe wash over me. It's no wonder it's considered one of the island's most sacred places.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 December 2023

This Big Buddha has quite successfully drawn tourists from all parts of the world to sightsee its magnificent Buddha statue. The scenery at the top of the hill is indeed breathtaking. At the ground level, there was a Thai monk seated and venerated by tourists whom some of them are Caucasians, and he in return bestowed a “chanted” string to tie around the wrist for blessings. Similarly, there were more Thai monks at the top of the hill who were seated and continuously chanting Buddhist mantras, presumably to protect this sacred site.
Throughout the temple, one can hear the noise of ongoing partial renovations; donations were encouraged though not obliged. There was no vegetarian restaurant in this place, no seats were provided and no pretty souvenirs were sold. There was limited activity other than photographing the mediocre-looking Big Buddha, watching monkeys who happened to appear near the trees and sightseeing the view at top. In addition, transportations were limited, and we had to pay an over-priced taxi fare to reach here. The only consolation is that this is a free admission site.
All in all, this attraction is overly rated and is not highly recommended for those with a hectic or overloaded travel schedule. In comparison to other Buddhist sacred site in other countries, this one lacks the “wow” factor and I certainly will not return.

This is a beautiful spot to visit. Free entry (although you’ll need to pay for your transport there and back) and a great view. Buy a tile and write your name on the back for the cost of a small donation and contribute to finishing the statue and surrounds.

The Buddha image is 45 meters high and sits over 400m above sea level on a hilltop in the south of Phuket island and covered in marble. At present there's no entry fee, donations are voluntary. The Big Buddha is well worth a visit. Taxi or Tuk Tuk may charge you 800 - 1500 with your bargain power from Patong Beach area. There are marble pieces you can donate with a small fee which will be fixed somewhere in the temple with your name on it.

Nice view of the city from above. Peaceful and good experience. The temple is still under construction but the walk around and view from outside of the Big Buddha was amazing. We also spent some time giving coins on the bowls for the 37 monks. There were also monks sitting and tying threads to whoever went ahead and it felt nice. On our way back also visited a handicrafts retailer/wholesaler store which kept good household decorative items at reasonable price.

Impressive statue, building surroundings still in progress. With your donation they can keep going, buy a tile and write your name on it for 300 baht. Great atmosphere, nice viewpoint. When not dressed properly you are provided with sarong, well organized, just leave a tip, it is free of charge. There are several other gold plated statues to see and you can pay for a personal blessing by a monk. Must see when at Phuket.

I was staying in Patong Beach and had rented a scooter for a few weeks while I was there. As you head south from Patong you hit the beaches Kaont and Kata, if you look up to the left you will see Big Buddha clearly visable on top of a mountain. Having no idea how to get there, I circled heading to Rawhi Beach and looking for a road where I could try to get up. It wasnt too difficult as within minutes I was on my way up.. Its a steep winding road, but if you drive safely you should have no problem.
Once arriving, I was directed to a self parking area for bikes. The Big Buddha is right there and is massive. It can be seen (in many but not all places) over the Island. There are workers putting finishing touches on marble tiles to the grand structure. There is no fee to enter, but plenty of places to donate, and even an area to be blessed by the monks who are continually chanting.
there are trinkets for purchase, and the view is spectactular.
Well worth your trip

Take a taxi up to the main carpark and enjoy the walk through the shaded woods to the top or go up the magnificent white steps. You'll need sunglasses! Takes about 3 minutes. We took the kids ( 9, 12, 15 ) up to the big Buddha and spent about 2 hours there. It is an educational centre rather than purely a temple. Expect superb views and beautiful places to sit and wonder. We visited the Buddhist monk inside the temple and each received a blessing - It was very special. You will need to cover your legs and arms but if you dont have a shawl you can borrow one at the entrance. Dont forget a sun umbrella too as there is very little shade at the top. We saw monkeys in the neighbouring trees whilst we were there too which our kids loved. Well worth a visit.

Friday 14th February we were on a tour of the sights and Landmarks of Phuket and this was one of the places we visited, and it was one of the super highlights.
From our hotel balcony, in Karon, we were able to see, the back of the Big Buddha, in the distance, so good to see it in its entirety.
Our Guide informed us that it took 9 year to build the Big Buddha, the rest of the buildings are not yet completed, building work still going on.
In fact as we climbed the large steps up towards the Buddah, workers were putting the marble tiles on the large snakes on both sides of the stairway.
The Big Buddha stands 45 metres tall and 27 metres wide and was built using Burmese white marble. It was not possible to walk all the way around the base of the Big Buddha due to the building works.
Around the base of Big Buddha, between the supporting pillars, are numerous golden statues.
As the Budda is 400 Metres above sea level it was a very steep climb up the road, even for a bus.
There was a small stall selling golden shaped hearts, 100 Baht, people were writing messages, memories, dreams on the hearts and then tying on trees, railings, anywhere around the place. We wrote a memorial message, found it to be an emotional experience.
On the way out, going down the steps away from the Big Buddha is a Buddhism centre. This is where it possible to purchase religious items and Buddhist material. All profits from sales are use to help pay for the upkeep and completing the building works.
There was also a Monk blessing visitors and placing a colourful cotton bracket on their wrist, this was for agood life, a large donation box was close by.
There definitely was a real serene and calming atmosphere about this place.

It is amazing place, especially at sunset. It’s worth a trip - you won’t regret it! Panoramic views of the south of Phuket, an almost completed statue of the Big Buddha. The only thing is - be careful with the monkeys, they are quite aggressive. Is is also free of charge. Will recommend it everyone.

Myself and my boyfriend visited the Big Buddha, which was part of a full day tour.It was a lovely experience, as we even got to receive personal blessings from the monks.
I would recommend that a visit to this really huge (haha) statue is added to your itinerary while in Phuket Town.

Is it easy to get a grab from Big Buddha back to Patong?
Written 2 June 2024
Should be no problem, we looked at using grab and the app showed the availability of taxis. Failing that pre book a private car. Hope this helps.
