This is a small, but important canal, linking the North Sea with the Baltic Sea. There have been a number of canals since the first one in 1784 and the number of ships using the canal is the highest for any in the world.

We went through the locks on our cruise ship, which was throughly fascinating. I stayed out on the balcony the entire time (took about 1.5 hours total) just to watch, not only the mechanics of the operation but to wave at the people on the banks that seem to enjoy the experience also. There are several view points, both on... More

1st time negotiating the Kiel Canal on a Fred Olsen cruise ship. Amazing technology watching ships of all sizes queue up (when busy) to enter through the huge canal gate and begin a journey of almost 70 miles seeing some stunning scenery.

We went on a trip to Dithmarschen. This is an area north-west in Schleswig-Holstein at the North Sea. It is very flat and leafy there and lush meadows are everywhere. Driving past the farmyards and beautiful houses we realised that the farmers seem to be pretty rich. This region is also famous for growing cabbages. We were astonished to find... More

On our cruise we transited the Kiel canal twice, once by night - which we slept through - and once by day. Basically the waterway consists of a canal with sets of locks ar each end. Built in the late 19 th c. And widened between 1907 and 1914 to enable the passage of dreadnought battleships between the North Sea... More

Sitting on the banks of this magnificent canal, and also viewing the mighty locks, was a sight not to be missed; vessels stacked high with containers from many Eastern Countries of the World (Latvia; Estonia; Norway; Germany) was a sight to behold. And all so quiet!

This is a great area for a spring walk or bike ride. There is a path along the canal that makes for a great flat ride. Interesting to see all the ships transiting the canal.

We had a very pleasant and peaceful transit of the canal. The colours, wildlife, and gentle countryside were a joy to view while just relaxing and watching the world go buy. The locals were friendly, and in many places came out to wave at the ship as we passed. The traffic was fairly heavy on the canal, and we had... More

We travelled through the Kiel Canal on Seabourn Quest. Transit took awhile as we waited our turn. It allows time to sit on your balcony and watch the beautiful countryside go by.
