As part of our Aarupadaiveedu Trip from Chennai, we covered this temple as the first of 6. We three started from Chennai on 23rd Dec 2019 from Chennai by car and reached Kumbakonam around 11 PM and stayed there. Next day morning we started from Kumbakonam and reached Swami Malai at around 7 AM. It was actually raining moderately all through the way. So the crowd was very less. We had a nice dharsan and spend about 40 mins in the temple before heading to Pazhamuthir cholai.
Since the crowd was less and was raining we were able to get the car parking easily. But on a crowd day the parking may be little difficult. The temple is very neat and clean and had a peaceful and great Dharsan.

out of 6 prominent Temple of Lord subramanya this one is very special. In this temple SUBRAMANYA teaches the essence of VEDHA before it is declared & he demands the complete meaning from LORD BRAMHA which he fails to explain he put him in prison. Shiva need to release Brahma so he request Karthikeya to teach & explain the vedhas. Karthikeya does so he becomes a GURU FOR HIS FATHER itself. we could see an statue placed near east prahara (which is visible form the DOSDHASTHAMBA).
attraction we could see that the steps are named after the 60 tamil years. it helps the younger generation to understand & learn the tamil in proper manner. chanting KANDHA SASHTI kavasam for 32 times in the mantapam near kasi viswanathar temple is considered holy.
Having the temple in bank of CAVERY one can take an dip being a holy river. Offering HAIR / TOOLABARAM is performed in this temple.
VIBOOTHI abishekam is very special.

Priests & agents are hunting devotees take care not to get paid extra for special darshan which they do nothing. buy paying special dharshan ticket you can get much close to the center place which is more than enough. as this temple is handled by hindu board of tamilnadu govt. they are well paid & temple is rich.
you may make contribution in provided hundi or valuable offering in office and take receipt.

I have visited this temple more than once. I love to visit this temple as and when I get a chance while passing through Kumbakonam.
Swamimalai Murugan Temple is a Hindu temple located in Swamimalai, 5 km from Kumbakonam on the banks of a tributary of river Cauvery, The temple is one of the six holy shrines of Lord Murugan called Arupadaiveedu. The other holy shrines of Lord Murugan are, Palani, Thiruchendur, Thiruttani, Phalamudurachoolai and Thiruppakara Kundram. I have the pleasure of visiting all the six abodes of.Lord Murugan.
The shrine of Swaminathaswamy, the presiding deity at this place, is located atop a 60 ft hillock, whereas the shrine of his mother Goddess Parvathi and father Lord Shiva is located down the hill... In Swamimalai, Muruga is known as "Balamurugan" and "Swaminatha Swami"...
According to Hindu belief, Swamimalai is where Muruga preached what is called as "Pranava Mantra" to his own father, Shiva, at a tender age, after arresting Brahma for not answering his question about Pranava Mantra. The teaching capabilities of Murugan is found as one of his identifying features.
As it is close to Kumbakonam town, devotees of not only Lord Murugan, others can also visit this temple.

This temple for Lord Murugan is one of the six famous Murugan temples known as Arupadai Veedu. Temple is easily reached from kumbakonam and pilgrims need to climb about sixty steps to reach the almighty's sanctum. Steps are a bit steep and elderly could find it a bit tough.

Swamimalai Swaminatha Swamy Temple is located in Swamimalai dedicated to Lord Murugan. It is 5 km from Kumbakonam. The temple is one of the six holy shrines of Murugan called Arupadaiveedu.The shrine of the presiding deity, Swaminatha Swamy is at the top a 60 ft hillock. The shrines of his mother Parvathi (Meenakshi) and father Shiva(Sundareswarar) are at the downhills.
The temple is kept clean.. You can have special Darshan of Lord Muruga by paying Rs.50/- . We tend to see Lord Muruga again and again, such a Lovely Lord Vigraha.

Swamimalai is one among the 6 murugan owned home, it is located in 6kms from kumbakonam,this is not a temple over a hill like other murugan temple just 60steps need to climb to pray the great Lord murugan, we have near by heritage star hotel called sterling and paradise,i would suggest those hotels for tourists,we have near by lot of hotels for food and transport also good .we have lot of buses to go to kumbakonam.from there you can go to different cites.

Lord Subramanya in a standing position blessing the devotees. The temple is situated on a small hillock. One needs to climb a few steps to have the Darshan of the Lord. The Lord has elephant as his vahana instead of a peacock,which is always his vahana.
The place is famous for Bronze casting and you can actually witness the artisans working and making statues in the Bazaar street.
Lots of types of Prasadams are available in the temple premises. Buy and enjoy the food.

If you are in kumbakonam- the temple is must and never the town. The temple is well maintained and crowd is well regulated.

No introduction is necessary to describe Swamimalai Murugan temple. This is a well known place to all devotees and it attracts thousands of them through out the year. During special days-like Karthigai star of the month,Vaigasi Visagam, Panguni Uthiram- unmanageable crowd can be seen at sanctum to have darshan of Lord Swaminatha, a Majestic Swaminatha with His Vel.
Many marriages are performed here and we attended one such marriage of our relative on that day. Ear piercing ceremony, head tonsuring, etc are a regular feature here,almost through out the year and in particular during good muhurtham days.
At the entrance, we can worship Lord Siva and Goddess, along with Navgraga sannithi,Goddess Durga Devi sannidhi,etc. OMG,Lord Swaminatha always has good devotee crowd,waiting for HIS blessing.

This is one of the most precious temples of Tamil Nadu - One amongst the 6 holy abodes of Lord Subramania. This is supposed to be the place where he taught the meaning of 'Pranava' to his own father - Parameshwara and hence holds the name Swaminatha (Teacher/Lord of Lord).
While the temple is big and maintanened reasonably well, what doesn't work is the surrounding ecosystem. This includes the operation of the TN government's "Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department" which hardly cares for the temple and it's operations (e.g. have left the guest houses to ruine, no regulated dharshan tickets). Rubbing salt to the wounds are the stinking open defecation around the temple. If aforementioned items are taken care, this has the potential to be a greater tourist spot than what it's today.
