A single ancient carriage creaks and squeaks its way up the picturesque hills and valleys of the countryside behind Genoa, stopping to let locals and walkers off at places that make the middle of nowhere look cosmopolitan (tell the conductor if you want to get...More

It’s all about the journey and not the destination! Unless you want to hike in the mountains, best to make this a half day trip as there’s little to do in Casella and few places to eat. The train goes from Piazza Manin where local...More

One of several ways of climbing out of Genova by public transport. This small train takes you on a lovely ride up the side of a couple of valleys to Casella - a pleasant small town with a few restaurants and a couple of small...More

With a suggestion from a local Genova destination expert we decided to take the Genova-Casella train for some mountain and country side views. The weather was a bit overcast with light rain but we gave it a shot anyway. After trudging uphill from our hotel...More

After taking the 36 bus from Genova Principe we got off at Manin and got a bit confused trying to find the station. It is not connected to the public lift visible from the bus stop but is next to the Mobil Petrol Station directly...More

A one hour trip from Genoa to Casella, on this narrow gauge railway that screeches its way through rugged mountainous countryside. Great views over Genoa and of the forts on the old city walls. Very cheap at 4.5 euro each way. It's the locals' "bus."...More

The train goes from Piazza Manin which can be reached via bus 34 or 36. The station is above the piazza - there is a staircase next to the little Esso petrol station. An hour's journey into the forested hills above Genova on narrow twisting...More

Interestingly quaint rail journey, best to check the train times first, though you can do this on a 'phone via internet. The guard was very friendly, train very clean. Casella is a lovely little town, if you walk up the hill, lovely town square, and...More

We took this good value train ride as a change from the scenery of the coastal towns. It is very difficult to access the hills behind Genoa if you do not have a car. The journey itself on this narrow gauge railway up into the...More

Sorry I can’t help you with that as we travelled on the local bus - there’s a bus station just under the flyover at the far side (east) of the port from the cruise terminal and info online about the bus routes.
