At the tail end of Yong Kang St. - the intersection of Chao Zhou St. and Yong Kang St. is a cluster of antique shops selling both Taiwanese and Chinese items, many at very reasonable prices.
Highly recommended if you are an ardent antique collector or just looking for a unique item to take home as a momento or gift for others.
Prices are not bad. Quality of stuff is good.

Lots of food. Great lil boutiques. Famous for beef noodles and mango dessert. The first Din Tai Fung is here; with its long queue all the time, serving its famous soup dumplings @ siew loong bao.

Yongkang street is famous for the restaurants there, so definitely head over there hungry! It is easiest to reach there on the subway at the Dongmen station exit 5. You can easily spend around 3 hours there just eating around. Perhaps the best way is to order small portions and share, so you can get a taste of everything they have!
Some key highlights for us: Tianjin spring onion pancakes, Yongkang beef noodles, Smoothie house for the famous mango shaved ice! There is also a famous ramen place, but we were really too full at that point... Also, Din Tai Fung is not to be missed - the branch at Yongkang is the original shop, and you can bet to see crowds there all the time!
After a whole afternoon of eating, we walked from Yongkang street to the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall (around 20 mins walk), which was a good way to burn some calories!

Very easy to get to by MRT at Dongmen Station. Go straight out of Exit 5 and turn right at the first street. That's Yong Kang St. Lots of interesting restaurants and cafes on the main street and in the lanes off to either side. Also lots of quaint shops selling clothing, jewelry, ceramics, etc. If you walk all the way down to the far end you will discover a small antiques market in a building on the right side, #60 or thereabouts, as well as some independent antique dealers in the nearby lanes. I spent an enjoyable afternoon just wandering up and down, stopping here for a snack, there for a late lunch, and at another place for a coffee.

From DIn Tai Fung to Yongkang Beef Noddles... you won't get hungry. There are lot's of restaurants to discover and overall it is a quite pleasant neighborhood. Just a 10 min stroll north from Shida (NTNU), or right outside Dongmen MRT station.

This is probably more of the famous food streets in Taipei well known for beef noodles and mango ice. Came here for a specific beef noodle joint that CNN recommended - Yipin. It was just average . We then looked for a mango ice shop that was apparently famous. It was ok, not sure how we can critique mango and ice

I love it here! The area offers so many casual restaurants that I wanted to try every single one! We tried a scallion pancake, knife-pulled beef noodle (tomato version was great, too!), taro dessert, and a massage place. Everything was great. It's just a fun place to hang out.
We paid TWD1100 for a 60 mins body massage and both mine and my friend's masseurs' were very good:) Forgot the name, but they had a big 'foot' sign, so you can't miss it. So many mango dessert places to choose from, too:) A bakery at the corner was great! Aghhhh I wanna go back tomorrow - LOL This is a must try area when in Taiwan!!

Went there around 11am. Perhaps i am too early. No crowds is the main plus point. Shopping wise I think not as many things to buy as compared to night markets and Ximending. Food wise there are a couple of recommended eating place. I only managed to try 老張牛肉麵. Nice!
Will go again next time probably in the evening to try their food.

The street is about 8-10 mins Walk from dongmen station (red line). Most people are there to probably get a better feel of the lifestyle of the locals but certainly for food options.
Personally, nothing very much to shop except for food. Lots of choices but the prices don’t come cheap. Ranging from snacks to proper meals. Some are local food stalls while some could be franchise outlets.
I would say the crowd there are mostly tourists who have heard and therefore curious to experience the hype there.
The food I particularly like there are yong Kang beef noodles and the mango ice shaving desserts. Both in the price range of about usd$7-10 for a serving. If you want to pamper yourself to a simple treat of this price range in a non restaurant setting, please do.
The authentic Yongkang beef noodles is good because of the rich broth and the tender beef slices that melt in your mouth. Had tasted something similar from hua lien for 1/2 it’s price.
The mango ice-shavings comes with generous toppings. The ice shavings are smooth and of powdery texture. Much like Korean bingsu to me.
I also tried the local pancakes there. There’s always a queue and you won’t miss it. I had both original and one with ham. The taste is not very far from roti prata if you know what it is. Crispy and fluffy but also oily.
For ding Tai Fung lovers, there’s an outlet there. But you will need to queue really Long in the open for it. Do some risk assessment before you embark on this food venture.
There’s also a shop that claimed no 1 tomato beef noodles there. Misled by the info and the crowd there. It was a total disaster for me. The staff were cold and rude. Some signs of impatience if you take too Long to decide what to order. Unfortunately the poor staff service wasnt compensated by the taste of the noodles. The broth was bland; probably just plain water with some salt and a little flavour from the beef and tomato. Not a lot of toppings or ingredients in that bowl of noodles. The beef cubes were abit tough and required some amount of chewing. Will not recommend anyone with dentures to try this. As the food was such a let down, I just took a few bites.
As a tourist, there’s no harm going to yong Kang street to experience that hustle and bustle of people jostling one another. As my hotel sits very closely to dongmen station, it is pretty convenient for me to get there. If my accommodation had not been there, I wont take the extra effort to go there.

He told me that it was quite a famous place in the old days for good food.. but having arrived there
I was somewhat disappointed ..
and certainly was not going to join so many people at one place eating their mango dessert.. wandering
was more my cup of tea ... if one looks up above the many modern signages the average tourist will miss the whole purpose of visiting this place ... see my images and u can understand what I see that others cannot see

Is YongKang street walking distance from Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall? Do you recommend to walk or ride the MRT or bus?
Written 7 June 2018
Its quite a distance from CKS memorial hall. The nearest MRT station is Daan Park which is about 5 mins walk to Yong Kang street.
