There are a number of "old streets" in Taiwan, that is, streets which have architecture from days gone by and in particular the Japanese colonial period (1895-1945), The area was heavily logged during the Japanese colonial period.. . Fenqi Hu is one such "old street.". I did a quick survey while the bus was stopped and I though it was interesting, but no better than other "old streets.". The "old street" has shops, eateries, souvenirs and so on. I wouldn't go out of my way to see it.. As the bus between Alishan and Chiayi often stops off here, take a look for yourself.

This is the town where most people will stop at when taking the train to Alishan.
Small town with a commercial street where you could find snacks and food shops.
Main street has the same feel as Jiufen.
If taking the bus, can consider to skip this town.

People visit Fengqihu to either take pictures of the old trains or stop to wait for a train to go up to Alishan. While waiting for the train, people can take a walk in the old town. This is where you buy your old Alishan Train Bento box and many local Alishan products like tea, wasabi and crackers

Nice place to stop for coffee or tea and to pick up gifts to and from Alishan. Nice overlook mountain views.

Visited Fenqihu during the trip by Alishan forest railway. Small old street with the ambience with many stairs reminds me with Jiufen. Not many stalls. Good to try bento box.

Fenqihu Old Street is delightful. We especially enjoyed the "Wooden Wonderland" coffee house--it was delightful to sit out on their back deck. The bento box meals at "WaHu" outdoor restaurant at the western end of the street were excellent and very inexpensive. In side the covered part of the street you can watch while your doughnuts are rolled and baked fresh for you!

Fenqi Hu Old Street is a thoroughfare in Feng Hu, a village high up in the mountains surrounded by tea gardens. It's on the way to and from Alishan. The Old Street has a lot of interesting old things to see and buy. You can take the county bus, just make sure you have the right schedule. You may also be able to take the narrow gauge railway from Chiayi to Fenqui Hu, if you are lucky.

In the area of Alisha, we stopped here for a while. Some yummy street food, coffee shops and a nice place to by some food as gifts for friends. The old train station with the steam engines is worth a couple of minutes too.
