Well I visited this place last year around may 2019.
1night 2 days had a good time and felt the Fresh Air and clean water.
Thanks to our GUIDE/POTTER MR MADAN from kareri village , he made the trek easy for us and was very helpful throughout.
The lake is a jewel in itself in dharamshala. .
Best time to visit may-sep for greenery and snowfall combined

For me, experience with Travel Monk was great! I personally found Sourabh bhaiya to be compassionate and proactive. Amit Bhaiya, our guide was too generous and helping. I would definitely recommend and also planning my upcoming treks with Travel Monk soon.

Great offbeat trek. Less crowded trek, away from maddening crowd and old treks. Trek was full of nature and views. Highly recommended. We booked through thetravelmonk.com . Very professional and passionate team. Everything was taken care by them. All stay and camping facility were neat and clean and sanitized. Proper precautions for covid were taken. Professional guide. They also given us one night riverside camping. It was superfun. Highly recommended for women trekkers. Cont 8146654329. thetravelmonk.

There is a simpler route to Kareri Lake now. You can drive till Salli village from Shahpur. There is a very nice permanent camp which one can use as a base called snowmonkcamp . Best months to trek to Kareri Lake are March end - June & then October to December. The route from Salli village is much simpler and all along the river Khauli. One must keep atleast 3 days for visiting Kareri Lake. It is a beautiful trek much better than the Triund trek any day
We did the trek with our family and children and they enjoyed every bit of it. We recommend children from 10 years upwards to do this trek.

Overall: A wonderfully beautiful lake, enough to keep you clicking away endlessly; A nice, not-necessarily-easy trek
Trek Outline: About 3/4 of the path has stone steps, paved by the villagers (amazing effort); It can get steep at places, but nothing which requires jumps or crawls.
Walking Style: As the path is steep, we walked/climbed 15~20 minutes, and took 5 minutes break.
Shops/Food/Snacks: None; There are no shops beyond Gera village, save for a single small shop near a Bridge and one in the Temple compound of Kareri Lake - both are temporary and may be closed. You will have to arrange for your own meals (or your guide would do it)
Distance: Don't ask - I have no idea. Almost all people we talked with had their own figures. I think it would 3~5 Km from Gera->Kareri Village and 8~11 Km from Kareri Village to Kareri Lake. There is no definitive path so I don't think there would be any official distance as well.
My Trip Time: 4 Nights, 3 Days: 2 Nights travelling in Bus from/To Delhi; 1 night in Kareri Village, 1 Night in Kareri Lake
Facts:
From Dharamsala, one has to reach Gera Village which is reachable by road. (~30 minute journey). Thereafter starts the real trek via Kareri Village to Kareri Lake.
It took us about 3~4 hours to reach Kareri Village from Gera. The trek was mostly through paved stone steps, some were fairly steep but overall fairly placed. There were some river crossings, but none were difficult. We had a night halt in Kareri Village (there is option of home stays or tents). Tents would be placed along a brook about 1 Km from Village, but the place is amazingly beautiful, nestled between towering mountains and lush green slopes. Because of the rainy season, our stay was in a Home Stay arranged by our guide, but we did go to camping place to spend some time.
Thereafter, from Kareri Village to Kareri Lake, we took about 8 Hours to reach, of which, 1.5 hours can be attributed to heavy rain and hailstorm. There is no shelter all through the way so our ponchos and rain gear helped us immensely. Even with all the rain gear, we were wet, cold and extremely exhausted on reaching the lake - but, one view of the lake and all our exhaustion vanished.
My Opinion:
Once at the lake, the scenery was simply breathtaking. It is a view worth walking/climbing for 8 hours. There is a temple complex which has some shelter under which people set-up their tents in rains. Else, in good weather, the lush green slopes provides really nice camping ground. Facilities (read, food, toilets) at the lake are super basic, but not at all inconvenient. There is a set of 3 shed-toilets - clean, but cramped (what did you expect :D). The temple complex was pretty clean when we went.
One can travel further to Malkiani, Lamdal, Gaj-pass hereafter, but at least we didn't go ahead.
We had Mr. Kuldeep (+91-9418414668) as our guide. In my personal opinion, it is almost not possible to travel without someone to guide you, to take care of food and shelter and other needs. I would strongly recommend to not try the trek without one - at least the first time. He (Mr. Kuldeep), managed all meals for us, carrying all necessary groceries with him. In fact, he arranged tents and sleep bags at the lake. He was the one who helped us get down in time for our bus, encouraging us where needed, lifting our backpacks if we were exhausted. Because of the hailstorm we had given up hopes to carry on, but it was he who pushed us through, encouraging us and eventually turning this trip into success.
We could have tried to travel from Gera to Kareri Lake in a single day, but I think it would have take a lot of effort and we wouldn't have enjoyed enough because of exhaustion. Our stoppage in Kareri Village gave us enough time to be prepared for Kareri Village -> Lake trek which is the most difficult one.
I would sincerely suggest that before taking this trek one should at least have a brisk walk session of 30~45 minutes a day for a month prior to trek - else, it is going to be a tough time. We saw too many people coming back down even before reaching halfway. They were too exhausted and simply didn't want to go ahead. I would no way rate this a normal-easy trek - but again, such comparisons are subjective.
Min Preparation:
- Trekking Shoes; Don't take Normal Sports shoes, you will regret it, specially while travelling back. There are fairly steep slopes which normal sports shoes will slip on. Specially when it is rainy season, shoes would get wet and make your life miserable.
- Track pants, preferably breathable fabric. Though, anything which are comfortable in should be OK. It was not very cold (except at the lake) when we travelled (September).
- Walking Sticks: for those who are slightly on the heavier side.
- Backpack - it rains, almost without warning, so carry a waterproof one. Or at least cover your stuff with plastics even in a bag.
- A Poncho or Waterproof Jacket/Trouser - don't travel without these - there is no 'shelter' throughout the way to save you from rain.
- When we went, there was slight snow and tempratures were about 3~4 degress. So, carry enough thermals - light and necessary. Keeping warm through fire is not possible on rainy days.
Some Other points:
- There is a almost-non-motorable road a little distance from Kareri Village (near) al the way from Gera; We were exhausted while coming back and our guide arranged our pick from there; There were landslides throughout the way.
- Almost all through are climb, we stopped a lot just to take in the natural beauty. It did slow us down but if we had kept walking, all we would have seen is the step :D - take breaks, look around - this is what I can suggest.
- Some steps are pretty steep, specially while climbing down, be careful and slow or you might harshly impact your knees or hurt your calf muscles.
- When at the lake, we walked all the way around it and over the nearest meadows - it was a very beautiful view. There were shepherd homes and loads of sheeps.

1. Attraction : Gone are the days when most tourists used to limit themselves to shimla manali dharamshala.....with spreading of awareness thanks to internet , more and more tourists are searching for serene virgin places ....Kareri is one such attraction.situated in kangra valley its about 40 kms from dharamshala and somewhat similar distance from kangra.
2. How to reach : the actual trek distant is about 13-16kms . there is one forest guest house at kareri which you have to book at forest office dharamshala. (number available at net). the guest house has two rooms with basic amenities....geyser attached bathroom , quilt, double beds.in case not able to book guest house, there are certain tour operators. (info available on net). it can be planned in two steps....reaching kareri village and then followed by actual trek the next day. Reaching kareri can be done on your four wheeler....but not before checking the condition of road or else if ur not comfortable with hill driving hire a taxi.
3. tips: spend night at kareri village, bring your own food, drinks and in case staying in guest house the watchman will prepare food for you ..whatever u have brought. this trek requires some stamina and therefore not for all..it is not a family trip. also one must know how to access weather specially correlation with iforecast at imd website . we not must attempt it in bad weather days.
4. the trek : it took us four hours and 20 min to reach at the top. chocolates and glucose came in handy. a simple guide from kareri village (rs 600) was must to show us the way.
the view at the top was worth the effort ....the actual glacier was at throw away distance...we have tea maggi omelette water soft drinks ,basically a small vendor outlet at the top....weather changes fast....
5. enjoy the trip ...till kareri lake besides the gradient the trek is simpler with no/little risk. do not attempt in rainy season. all those going through tourist operators and staying in tents with more adventurous outing in mind have more options....for those who are looking for mere fun a good alternative TRUIND at dharamshala
happy travelling

First, its not an easy trek.. it'd take 2 days to reach lake with a night halt at kreri village. No option to stay at lake. you can camp but temp goes real low during night. best to start early from village and come back same day.. this way you can complete trek in 3 days. First day trek to village is easy and very beautiful from forrest and old houses.. Next day trek has lotsa steep steps and will be tiring. there is a forrest guest house at village. you may stay there. Not many shops in between to buy snacks.

It is one of the untouched place of Dharamshala. To reach Kareri Lake, one has to first reach Ghera Village which is 20 Km from Dharamshala. You can hire a taxi to reach there. It is 14km long trek which includes a lots of stairs which will give you a hard time to reach kareri lake. It is advisable to work on fitness level prior doing this trek. It will take 6 to 7 hrs to complete this trek.No camping facility is available on the top at kareri lake, so better hire a guide or take you own food and tent to enjoy the real adventure. You can contact manoj rajpoot (local villager) who helped us in camping and food. His number is 9736136880.

Hi, are vehicles allowed till lake point or the only way is through trek?
Written 20 March 2019
Ah no vehicles are allowed till lake point.. I mean there is no road at all. You can go by car/vehicle upto kareri village. From there you have to go by foot to Kareri lake which is approx 13 kms in total. i.e. distance from kareri village to kareri lake is ~13 Kms.
Written 26 March 2019
Hi,
So Kareri lake trek can be done in one day from Kareri village? We will be staying at Mcleodganj and hence thinking about how can we manage our accommodation here. Can we carry out own tents too?
Thanks!
Written 12 July 2018
Hi,
Its totally depends upto your stamina, its upto you if you can do a total trek of 26 kms from kareri village to kareri lake and back. Not a good idea, as per my opinion you should carry your own tent or you can contact camping organisers who would provide you tent, food and guide. You should stay one night at kareri lake and enjoy your trip...
Thanks & Regards

When i trekked it was raining, it made our trek little risky, because there is a stretch after jheel cafe where you will find it slippery, rest is upto your skills, ALL THE BEST 😊

Good to see all the reviews. I have a few questions, though.
01) I am an avid camper and I always carry all my camping gears including my own tent and sleeping bag. Can I use them as a free camper over there at Kareri Lake or must I take help from the locals?
02) Do I need to take any sort of permit / permission to trek to Kareri Lake and camp over there? If so, would be great if you provide details.
03) Is it possible to trek to the lake from Kareri village without any guide, completely by my own? I mean, is there a marked trail or there is a possibility of getting lost?
04) Can we get drinking water and some food at the lake? Is there any shop where I can at least buy drinking water (and food) nearby the lake?
05) I want to go at a time when I can see the snow capped mountain peaks around the lake, but can camp on the green grassland. Is it possible to get this kind of set up in April? Else, which week of April should be the best for the view around?
Your answers will be really helpful. Thanks in advance.
