Besides lots of Night markets, Taiwan also have lots of Day markets, which are usually patronised by locals who shop for their daily groceries ie vegetables, meat, cooked food, snacks, fruits, clothes, etc. It's not so touristy as compared to night ones, & prices are cheaper as well. Dongmen market is not very big but interesting as you observe locals way of life in its "raw" state. There are many other nice shops within the vicinity of this market.

The market is just besides the mrt station. The market is behind the back street and covers many streets. Normally local is just 100-200m long.
Out from exit 2, you see people walking into to do their marketing
It is good experience to see the local buying and selling.

Forget the tinsel and cheap rubbish at Shijin Market The Dongmen Market is a real food and fresh meat and vegetable market in the heart of Taipei buzzing with activity and bustling with morning shoppers looking for a bargain. No tourists here; locals with serious food on their minds. This is the real Taipei and one of the most underrated experiences in the city. Noise, smells, sights and organised chaos. No time to cook? All types of snacks, cooked meats fish and fruit and vegetables. See it before the tour groups find out.

Only open during morning hours . Market is lively: many alleys packed with shop and shoppers ( elbow room). Fresh meat, sea food, vegetables and fruits. Ready-to-eat food stalls with lots of choices. It is amazing to see and hear the activities around you as you walk around this local market. We enjoyed this market very much.

We love to explore local markets when travelling to other countries, Dongmen Market is a lovely and traditional market where you can find everything there such as hats, socks, scarfs, clock and watches, clothing, kitchen wares, fruits, meat, fish, toys, and many street venders selling different kinds of local cooked food, we enjoyed strolling around and small budget for lots of local food.

And you thought Taiwan is only famous for its night markets... do you know that its day market is even more fun? So blessed to have stayed near this market - it's absolutely worth visiting, even daily! Why? Because there is a wider variety of things to buy, more unique sights and sounds than the night markets! And their vendors change daily as it seems they get their store slots on a first-come, first-served basis.

So many items we got for a steal - souvenirs, bags, children's wear, etc were all a lot cheaper and of good quality... maybe half price of what they sell at the night markets or the air-conditioned underground street malls. Surely, seeing the the seasoned lifetime price negotiators (who else other than the local old people!) filling up the market is a sure sign of good prices.

Another factor that makes it better than night markets --- fresh produce aplenty here. It's a local market after all where locals get their daily fresh groceries. Many unique fruits and vegetables of Taiwan that you've never seen before e.g. gigantic strawberries at only a few dollars a pint or pineapple custard apples bred ONLY in Taiwan... no need to hunt it down in the Shilin labyrinth nor get cheated by the many overpriced fruit stalls aimed at tourists.

Our favourite observation? That the stall vendors are a lot friendlier than those at night markets. They offered us extra discounts, smiled at our kids, directed us to other competitive stores (selling similar items to theirs) when they don't carry certain items we asked for... oh! Perhaps there's just something about being bright, early and chirpy in the mornings...

There are many local markets in Taipei City, but this one definitely is the one of the best to go for many purposes or taking friends to experience local life. It is still very traditional. It is huge. It sells so many things. It has so many long queue shops. It serves famous local rice noodle breakfast. You can also find "surprise" vendors such as Chinese medicine, jewelry shop, second hand bookstore and many super old fashion shops in a corner or inside a small alley. I also think it is a good place to take kids or foreign friends for experiencing the tradition & buy everything you expect to get in the local market!

A really nice day market with loads of vegetables and uncooked / unprepared foods to make your own meal at home. It's not as crowded as many other markets but it's very cost. I'd recommend you to bring something to carry your items in and then walk around and buying great produce.
