- Jeffry bEssendon, Australia13,786 contributionsMRT goes everywhere, quicklyThe Taipei Metro System, known as the MRT, goes almost everywhere, quickly. I had two jobs, and I always took the MRT going to work. Once, as an experiment, I took a taxi. It was slower than the MRT and much more expensive. I spent 10 years in Taipei, and I never felt tempted to buy a car. At rush hour, space can get a bit tight, but passengers are always very polite.Visited December 2022Written 26 December 2022
- jasperho23 contributionsClean and easy to get aroundMetro connects to many attractions in the city. Frequency is good, usually around 3 to 4min between trains. Metro map is easy to read and metro line connections are clearly indicated and announced. Metro station and trains are very clean. Family seats available in train which are shaped like a “L” instead of a row of seats. Not all exits are wheelchair accessible, do take note to find out which exits are not if lifts are required.Visited February 2023Travelled with familyWritten 5 February 2023
- robert kBan Chang, Thailand153 contributionsI give it 10 stars! This is one of the best and most affordable metro systems in the world. It is very clean and I believe 50NTD is the most expensive fare. It pretty much goes anywhere you want to go. Just the best way to get around.Visited February 2023Written 8 February 2023
- FountainhallBangkok, Thailand193 contributionsStations Seem To Be EverywhereI can recall visiting Taipei several times before the Metro opened. The streets were full of motoercycles and getting around was far from easy. The Metro now is not only one of the most extensive in any capital city; it is incredibly inexpensive. It is rare now for me to take taxi in the city.Visited February 2023Written 2 March 2023
- platypus150Melbourne, Australia27,516 contributionsTry to avoid peak periodsThe Metro is cheap, but fast, clean, and gets the job done. I used it extensively with an Easycard. You can buy individual paper tickets, but Easycard allows a lot of flexibility and allows for other purchases. I took the Red line all the way north and used the light rail to the sea coast. Stations have signs and announcements in English and platform doors direct you to doors for fast boarding. Lines are colour-coded and stations are numbered, in case you cannot remember names. There is no eating or drinking on the Metro, so it is very clean. The Taoyuan Airport Metro line is quick and costs 150NTD, but the airport is a long way out. There are Priority Seats for elderly, disabled, or pregnant.Visited March 2023Written 16 March 2023

- Steven SPattaya, Thailand737 contributionsIn short, stress free travelI was hugely impressed by this capital city metro system. I used the metro a number of times. Each time I was sitting on the train I was observing everything around me trying to think of something that they should have/failed to address. Each time I came up with norhing. All the metro stations provide all the information you could possibly need to travel from one station to the next. This would have to be one of the most stress free metro systems I have ever used.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 26 October 2023

Used an Easycard as it is much easier than buying tickets and later in our trip we used these extensively on buses all around Taiwan. Purchased the cards on arrival at the first metro station after departing the airport. All the trains are ultra clean, no eating or drinking allowed and signage/schedule of train arrivals is excellent.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 November 2023

We bought the 1 day pass one day as we were travelling all over and then used our old Easycard the other day. This was still valid after 5 years! Easy to use and all lines are colour coded. Just bear in mind that the Taoyuan MRT line is totally separate.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 November 2023

Like a lot of the reviews suggest, this is so easy and efficient to use. Simple, clearly signposted, easy to navigate, cheap, efficient, clean and convenient to get around the city. Very safe. Some stations have WIFI. Stations are generally big so check which exit you need. The 'ticket' is like a coin token which is easy to loose so keep it safe. Have small change to purchase tickets. The automated machines are very easy to use and display a number of languages. I am from London originally and getting on a train means pushing and chaos. Here, lines are orderly, wait your turn, don't talk loudly and you can't eat or drink. Explains why it is so clean! Dowload the TAIPEI METRO MRT TRAVEL GUIDE on the Google Play Store which is helpful. To connect to the HSR or Airport, use Taipei Main Station.

Hello,
Will Google Maps use the Taipei MRT if I want to go from one place to the other, for example from the airport to the Raohe Night Market? I tried seeing the distance while on Google Maps while still being in the US, but it would keep telling me to take the bus.
Thank you,
Andrew

It might not answer your question, but it looks like this market is close to Songshan station. 3 mins walking from there.

I had refunded my easy card and my balance is only NT25 and deposit 100 is not refundable. I have thought I kept reading that the NT100 deposit was refundable. So did the refund at taoyuan airport after I used it for express train. If I had known NT100 non refundable, will have kept the card so that I can use it next visit. I had the card with me,but does anyone know I can reactivate the card again?

I know you can use it again for a certain number of years. I'm just not sure if how many years is that.

Which is the best English language app for the Public transport system in Taipei? And would you use the same one for the mrt and bus, or different ones for each? Many thanks

Go! Taipei Metro seems to be the official Taipei MRT app. Very easy to use and has fare info. Check it out.
But yes, taxis and car service are extremely cheap in Taipei. MRT is a great way to get around the city but for sightseeing, you can hire a car for a whole day for less than USD$150 to take you to places. It would be a bit more for English speaking driver. But a good way to see the island with an air conditioned air and a driver who knows his way around.
Have fun!

What is the title of the song played in the MRT in Taiwan? I think it played in the Blue-Ximen. Thanks!
It's been playing in my mind these days.

It is my understanding that there is a Student Easy Card that offers additional discounts. Is this a benefit for local residents only, or can foreign students travelling in Taipei also get this card? What is the procedure for getting the Student Easy Card? Are student ID's issued by a foreign school acceptable as proof?

I believe only students enrolled in a Taiwan school can avail of the student card. If you are a foreign student studying in Taiwan, then you can get a student ID from the school and use that.

There is subway service only from the Songshan airport. Most international flights operate in and out of Taoyuan. Taxi from there to central Taipei will be about 1250 to 1300. A prearranged taxi from central( not one called by the hotel) will be 200-300 less
