    Taiwan's most popular tourist attraction
Sun Moon Lake is located in the very center of the island of Taiwan. It is among Taiwan's most popular tourist attractions. The lake's name is derived from the lake's shape, which is like the sun in the east and a crescent moon in the west. Sun Moon lake, which is 8 km square, has many sights to appreciate. Apart from tourism, the area around Sun Moon Lake is known for agriculture. Tea gardens and the cultivation of flowers, which adorn the island of Taiwan, are features of the Lake. The Lake's changing moods intrigue visitors.

A beautiful lake with amazing scenery
I visited Sun Moon Lake with a few friends and found it to be quite beautiful. The scenery was spectacular with mountains around the lake. We took a boat ride around the lake and was able to really see its beauty.

A good place for a nice day
Dont expect some marvel of nature, as it is just a lake and you probably wont even see a sun or a moon. However with the right expectation it is definately a nice day out (I wouldnt spend more than a day trip). You can take a boat, bus, bike, walk or take a scooter (if you have a drivers license) to explore the lake and it's surroundings. There are tempels (Wenwu being the nicest), a pagoda, a town with food stalls and nature to visit. A lot of it is kind of a tourist trap which is kind of uncommon in Taiwan, but it is really populair with the locals as well. Dont buy tickets on the street (it's a scam) and ignore the Fallun Gon cultists and you should be fine. All in all it's a nice day on and around a lake which is still well worth the 1 hour and 40 minutes trip from Taichung. Dont take the trip from Taipei as it will cost you 4 hours.

Lovely spot with lots to see and do.
This is a lovely spot to spend two or three days exploring the lake and surrounding area which has lots to see and do. I took a bus direct from Taichung (about 2 hours) which leaves from the city close to the rail station and also picks up at the HSR station. Lots of very good accommodation in Shuishe (where the bus terminates), with plenty of shops and eating places all within walking distance. Yes, its obviously a tourist draw but I was there mid week in October and it didn't feel overly busy. Very easy to get around by bike (lots of hire shops), boat and local buses. Taking the ferry and the cable car to visit the Formosan Cultural Village is a must (although you can get there by local bus also.

    A Lovely Spot
This pair of man-made lakes, now one lake with the traditional small Lalu island in the middle, is a very pleasant spot. Lake cruises are available, and there are various points of interest around the lake, including temples, towers, the suspension walkway, and the impressive Wenwu Temple. There's a cyclepath/ walkway around the 30km perimeter. There's aropeway (cable car) up to one of the peaks. Lake fish is served in most of the local restaurants.

Stunning. If you have time, spend a few days in the area.
Sometimes you see photographs but when you are there, it doesn't look the same. Well this did. It was just stunning! I did a day trip from Taipei. If you have time, spend a few days by the lake. Peaceful, huge and serene. I expected a lot more tourists but it wasn't too bad. Explore and enjoy. Our tour included a boat ride on the lake which was lovely.

Day trip to Sun Moon Lake from Taipei
A little underwhelmed. Perhaps due to our high expectations travelled her from Taipei for a day trip. The lake is as nice and tranquil but if one had been to other lakes in Europe and NZ, this would not ranked as high. I recommend an overnight stay at lakeside or a day trip from Taichung.

    Must Visit in Nantou
Taiwan is a haven for nature lovers and adventurers. The best part is, they made it accessible to everyone without destroying nature. One of the proofs is SML. I loved my day trip here from Taichung. It's really fun getting off the boats and exploring the places - from temples, ropeway/cable car, Formosan aboriginal culture village, food markets, souvenir shops, bike trails, parks, cafes and restaurants. There's something for everyone here.

    Average Touristy Place
Took a day tour here. Nothing really special frankly speaking. The tour only bring us to 2 places. One is just a quick stop to taste the famous tea leaf egg, another is a tourist street food place for our lunch. If you truely want to enjoy the nature, recommend to put a night there rather than joining a tour

Good area to enjoys natures beauty
We spent three nights here on a tour around Taiwan which we arranged ourselves. Stayed at a hotel in Shuishe (Laurel Villa – excellent and close to the harbour) which was five minutes walk from the bus drop off and enjoyed some walking, cycling, viewing temples and took the ferry combo ticket across to Xuanguang (very good particularly the outstanding views from the Ci’en Pagoda) and Yidashao wharf (not much there other than the cable car). On our last day went to Chung Tai Chan monastery just outside Puli which is worth a visit. Sun Moon Lake is different from any other part of Taiwan. As the premier tourist destination in the country, we had braced ourselves for a tourist onslaught with commercialism dominating a beautiful part of the world but it was actually a very pleasant place to visit. While it can be very busy particularly with day trippers, in early morning and later in the evening, it is very peaceful. There are lots of boardwalks around the perimeter of the lake, many of these offer great vistas. The only thing that surprised us were the short dining hours, apart from Friday and Saturday, most places seem to stop serving after 7pm which perhaps reflects the lack of visitors staying overnight. One thing worth considering are the weather patterns around Sun Moon Lake. Generally, the clearest part of the day is at dawn and after lunch, the visibility worsens. Our hotel host confirmed this to be a regular weather pattern. On his recommendation, we hired bicycles for a dawn start going anti-clockwise around the lake. So peaceful and serine at this time of day with few people out and about and we managed to see a delightful sunrise.

Cruising the lake. Ya... Just cruising the man-made lake. Nothing much. Dull.
Do not take the cable car if you don't go to the cultural village or theme park. Just up & down. Wasting time & money.
During my visit, many shops were closed in Ita Thao shopping district. F&B just normal.

Family of 3 traveling with almost 2 year old child. Glad we did not pay high price for a full day tour. Trip is less than 2 hrs from Taichung. We attempted to go by bus, which would have been much cheaper, but tickets were booked up so we were able to share a taxi up and pay for one ourselves on our way back.

It was hazy skies when we were there, so the views were not great. Maybe they are stunning early morning or late evening or other times of year, which would make this worth visiting and staying at a hotel there? We did not go to the amusement park, we just took a boat across the lake to the shopping area, then bus to Wenwu temple. The shopping area had decent food and the temple was very large and nice. We struggled a bit with the stroller on and off the bus and boat.

Lots of traffic around the lake and bus is slow. I can see how this could be a nice place to cycle around if just alone or as a couple.

Overall, we were glad we saw it to say we saw it and not have any regrets that we missed something, but we didn’t really miss anything.

Something for everyone at Sun Moon Lake. You can hire bikes and ride round it, or you can get the boat and go across to different piers, or you can drive round it and visit the different temples. There is also a ropeway to see it from above. The lake can be hazy, which adds an air of mystery to it. There are maps and good information available at the visitor’s centre.

Lake View is okay, not stunning. Very little to do around the lake, half a day would be more than enough. I wouldn’t recommend overnight stay at all. Also wouldn’t come back again

There are so many more beautiful areas of Taiwan that warrant your time more than Sun Moon Lake. Its not really a beautiful lake, its often hazy (Chiayi area worst air pollution in entire country).

A stunning natural wonder located in central Taiwan. Nicknamed for its resemblance to the sun and moon. There is a well-maintained bike path around the lake, which is a great way to see the sights and get some exercise. You can take a boat ride on the lake to see the sights from a different perspective. The best time to visit Sun Moon Lake is during the spring or fall, when the weather is mild.

Sun Moon Lake is one of the most famous tourist spots in Taiwan, Nantou. There are also many attractions, temples, trails, boats, cable cars, and the culture of the Thao aboriginal people.

It is divided into Sun Lake and Moon Lake by Lalu Island. I'd love to take powered boats on Sun Lake and non-powered water activities on Moon Lake, such as paddle boards and canoes. Still, it can also circle the lake by hiking, cycling, snacking, drinking tea, picnicking, and chatting along the lakeside trail.

Get away from the cities and take a trip to the interior of Taiwan to see Sun Moon lake! Lots of hotels surround the lake so lodging is not an issue at all. Go on a boat and see the clear waters. Go to the opposite side of the lake to see the native area and shop their stores. Kayaking, paddle-boarding, and water bikes are offered as fun activities on that side. Bike rentals abound. Scenic bike/walk path goes around the lake, highly recommend.
