We visited the distillery as part of our day trip to Zhang Mei Ama Farm. It is a good stop even if you are not a whisky lover as the establishment is quite nice. I bought a few small bottles which looks quite pretty as gift to friends. There is a huge Xmas tree when we were there and the kids were fascinated.

You can also visit the Mr Brown Cafe just at 2nd level of the whisky tasting and gift shop area. We had ice cream just outside the gift shop and the kids were delighted by the great taste. We didn’t have chance to eat at the Mr Brown Cafe due to time constraint but the menu looks great.

Taiwan has been getting a rising reputation for its whiskeys in recent years, and it was an interesting visit to the Kavalan Distillery. You can take a quick gander to see how the whiskey is produced, including the various casts from the US.

Then it is on to the tasting room, where for $300 each, you can sample up to four different whiskeys. Most of those we tasted that day fell into the "having potential range", but were mostly young and sharp.

We did buy a few smaller bottles (there is a limit to how much we can bring home) of different vintage in the souvenir shop, and these were packed well even though you pay for the packaging.

All in all, it was a fun visit, and you can buy a few tipple souvenirs for friends and family back home.

The Kavalan Whisky Experience

Few people are aware that Ilan. Taiwan is also home to the Kavalan Distillery!

This multi award winning distillery is located about half an hour outside the main city and well worth a visit!

Obviously beside organised tours (to be booked in advance) as well as detailed tastings, also to be better booked, it has a sprawling visitors gallery well worth seeing

Myself a tad of a connoisseur of this fine whisky, I had a good time paying a visit and can only recommend it to anyone not only serious about whisky but also when in or around Ilan! A day trip with one additional stop from Taipei is also worthwhile!

Enjoy

Never been to a whiskey distillery so we couldn’t compare with the distillery tour. Anyway it was great to learn how whiskey was made. They had whiskey tasting package of 100 or 200 TWD which comes with vouchers that we can use to discount off the whiskey that we bought later.

Overall experience was still ok until when we wanted to call a taxi back to town and we approached the counter for help. They helped us called this taxi company 777 which they had cooperated with. Told us to wait for 20 min, and when the taxi driver arrived he wanted to charge extra for driving over to the distillery, without going according to the meter. We were quite disappointed with his haggling but since there was no other taxi services and it was near our boarding time for our train we had no choice but to take it. After the trip we call up King Car to complain and they pushed the responsibility to the taxi company and give us the number to call them. Didn’t you said you guys had cooperated with this taxi company for transportation out of the distillery? Anyway we called up the taxi company to complain but the reception just told us that they will take note but we doubt they are going to do anything. Anyway please arrange own transport or get another taxi company to help. Don’t go for this taxi company 777 in Yilan Taiwan.

Kavalan Distillery is known around the world for its outstanding whisky. It matures in oak casks, which impart a special flavour. Whisky afficionados treasure a bottle of Kavalan single malt, one of the world's most treasured whiskys. The Kavalan distillery is up in the mountains in Yilan, in north eastern Taiwan. You may have heard of the "Angels' share, Although Yilan is a cool climate area, the angels, are very greedy, so get your Kavalan whisky while you can.

You have probably heard of "the angels' share, that part of the cask that is lost to evaporation each year. Unfortunately, in Taiwan the angels are very greedy, mainly due to Taiwan's warm climate. Therefore, you should buy your whiskey whlle you can Kavalan Whiskey is excellent; a bit pricey, but it is also very very good. It's worth saving it for someone -- or something -- special.

I have a number of friends who are very knowledgable about whiskey and they rate Kavalan Whiskey, from Yilan on Taiwan's north-east coast as being among the world's best, if not the best, I have visited the distillery several times and spent several hundred dollars on whiskey each time. I intend giving most of it away, so I can share it with my friends, but I will keep at least some of i for myself. I'd rate Kavalan as being at least as good as Jameson's or Bushmills, which I tasted in Ireland..

Without knowing much about whiskey, I was totally surprised by this distillery, especially seeing the many rewards they have won throughout the years. They had whiskey tasting at designated time which we attended. Just not for me. The tour was self-guided with good signage. A huge gift shop/restaurant/coffee shop inside another building. Quite a fun visit.
