Red House is a Ximending icon
The Red House is a Wanhua landmark. It is often described as the Ximending Red House. The Red House is a Ximending icon. It dates from the Japanese colonial period (1895-1945). The exterior is ornate, and the red brick structure gives the Red House its name. The area hosts outdoor chairs and tables in the warmer months. "Ximen" is an historic name, the area means "west gate."

    Go on the weekend!
Go on a weekend afternoon when it is in full swing. It is busy then but such a cool atmosphere! There is also a Creative Market which is only there on the weekends. Hence I said go then. The Creative Market is just outside. You can also purchase some lovely items. Check the website for timings. Nice to watch the buskers and the teens of Taipei! The structure and colour of the Red House is unique. Worth walking around it before going inside. The 'red' is somewhat simple but striking. Inside you can learn more about the history, take the leaflet which is in English too. There was a coffee shop and the usual gift or souvenir shops. Staff are pleasant and friendly. Right by Ximen MRT.

    Cool area, great vibe
This is a really cool area to interact with. The atmosphere surrounding the Red House is buzzing. Seeing both young and old being able to express themselves as they like, really adds to the vibe. There are some really good bars, I loved the weekend artisan market outside. Also the quality of the products sold inside the house and of course what it all represents. In fact the whole area of Ximen is alive. It was by chance that I booked a hotel for a couple of nights here. So glad I did. My colleague from Australia also loved being here.

Finally, noted it open on my last day in Taipei
I thought I would not see its interiors before I leave the city. Finally on my last day, it was opened and I was able to visit it. Inside are shops that sell items represented to be made in Taiwan. Items for sale include beautiful music boxes, souvenirs, clothes, tshirts, watches, etc. I just looked around and took some photos here. Outside are the stores, shops, restaurants of the Ximending area.

Heaps of interesting shops inside, including one with tiny wooden miniatures and a Taiwanese souvenir shop. Also a tourist information counter with friendly and helpful staff.

The Ximen Red House is a feature of Wanhua, in Taipei's Ximending area. This is a historic area of Taipei, and the Red House is one of the most impressive remainng buildings. It sticks out in the modern arcitecture ,it's easy to find. These days, Wanhua is a meeting-place for Taipei's young people. The Red House is made of red brick, it has many souvenirs and artists selling their wares. It's a good place to purchase some authentic reminders of your trip to Taiwan.

The Ximen Red House is in the Wanhua District. It was built in 1908, during the Japanese colonial era (1895-1945). It was built of red bricks. It has had many uses, most particularly as a public market. Today is has a number of small retail outlets, selling souvenirs and other bits and pieces. "Ximen" means "West Gate", it's an area popular with young people.

Built in 1908, the Red House is an umistakable building in the middle of the largely modern-looking Ximending shopping district. Initially used as a public market, the red-bricked (hence the name) octaginal building has served a variety of roles, including a public market, bookstore, cinema, and theatre. In a way, it's reverted to its first role as it now serves as the centrepiece of a shopping centre. We found shops divided amongst a series of longitudinal two-storey buildings, and which focued mainly on artistically-designed themes, including jewellery, clothes, posters, and souvenirs. In a city that's quite devoted to a range of shopping experiences, it's nevertheless a nice place to spend an hour or tow happily browsing.

This is a restored theatre that was built during the Japanese occupation. It is not far from the Ximending pedestrian area.

Inside there are stalls with local craftspeople and designers selling very unique products from handmade jewellery to retro Taiwan clothes and crafts. It is all made in Taiwan mostly.

If you want something not run of the mill as a souvenir , this is the place to go.

There is also a small cafe.

Drop in and have a look. Nice oasis from the outside world.
