With its air of historical heritage, Shuijinjiu (ShueiNanDong, Jingguashi, Jiufen) used to be prosperous and glamorous due to mining. Although its magnificent semblance no longer exists, the peaceful and beautiful atmosphere has persisted. With a wave to the age of the gold rush, one can still see a glimpse of its glorious past through the Golden Waterfall. Gazing at the ShueiNanDong Remains of the 13 Levels, it is like a beautiful palace that was deserted, earning it the name of “Potala Palace of the Mountain Mines”. Probing forward to the mouth of the river is the considerably distinguished Yinyang Sea, with its half gold half bluish green spectacle inspiring countless imaginations of romance. Walking along the streets of the meandering old streets of Jiufen and tasting the various kinds of authentic eateries is the love of tourists. Stepping into the Golden Museum, one can glimpse the historical traces of the mining industry culture, reminiscing of past glories from its museum, living quarters, and shrine remains. The unassuming mountain city of Houtong used to be a mining village. With the call of cat lovers, volunteer groups were established to create a friendly environment for cats and turned Houtong into a cat village for cat lovers.

This movie theater reminded me of old movie houses in the Philippines. The wooden chairs, the ticketing office outside as well as a snack counter. This is located in a popular tourist area as it is just adjacent to the lantern alley. When in Jiufen, make sure to spend some few minutes exploring the interior of this old movie theater. There is also a room that serves as a museum of old photos and memorabilia when the theater was still operating.

Awesome little theater. Well kept. Good knowledge for tourists. Started in 1934 it was a cinema and a place for opera performances. I loved the wooden chairs. Even in the olden days, the VIP section on the first floor consisted of wooden chairs!

This is a free museum located in Jiufen (from within Jiufen Old shopping street, take the stairs down). There's nothing particularly remarkable about the theater itself, but it's set up to look exactly as it did back in the 1930's-1950's. There's a screen with chairs and I couldn't help but wonder if they ever actually play movies on it (nothing was playing when I was there). Even so, there were a few interesting items put on display.

Our guide, Jimmy Wang, told us that during the late 1800, this was the go to place for entertainment. You can still see the old projector displayed inside the theatre. It even had the balcony for the rich people.

The Shenping theatre was the first cinema in Taiwan, opened in 1914 to provide the miners in Jiuofen and Jinguashi some entertainment. It was rebuilt in 1934 and 1961. After becoming a ruin for many years, it was reconstructed in 2011. Now you can see how the miners enjoyed the show with live translations of silent movies. Occasionally there are performances of a Taiwan opera group.

It is an old movie theater in Jiufen. It projects sometimes movies, but for the rest of time it is open to public. The entrance is free. It is a good place to contemplate the entertainment in old days.

When visiting Jiufang old Minning Town, do not miss the Shengping Theater. The old theater has been revived and showing 'old movies' daily. With a small token as entry fee, one can sit down and enjoy a movie in the old day environment. To me personally, the experience is sensational and brought back fond memories during my young teen days. There are not many old theaters left in this world, thus, if you are around here, make sure you don not miss this opportunity.

An old theater, yet, a good size with a balcony seating. This means, Chiufen, back then (during gold mining era) must be quite fashionable and somewhat rich to have this luxurious theater. Of course, now it’s all good memories. My How town used to have a theater like this (smaller without balcony seating) which I enjoy my childhood very much back then over there. A must visit spot during your Chiufen trip.

The cinema is nothing to do with Dolby, 3D, IMAX. It is old and shabby. However, it brought you back to the old days, when movie was a luxury. Take a rest here after the mountain climbing.
