- Orator11Singapore, Singapore7,572 contributionsSky LanternsIt is quite a small street, but is extremely popular because it is along the narrow train tracks where trains from Taipei come, and it is also the place where people send skylanterns with wishes into the skies. You can buy a skylantern from $200, depending on the colours, and write messages to departed loved ones etc on all four sides. The staff will then light joss paper inside to heat up the air, before the lanterns are released to soar into the sky. It is good that they try to recycle the lanterns when they burn up and return to earth - locals are encouraged to find these and are then given a small financial reward to return these to the authorities. The shops lining the train tracks are mostly souvenir and snack shops.Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 17 November 2023
- Sallye4510Brisbane, Australia43 contributionsWrite your wishes on your lantern then set it free!Such fun! We took the train from Taipei - the view was mainly of the river, mountains and waterfalls. At Shifen Old Street we enjoyed great food, and loved choosing the colours for our lantern as each colour represents a different aspect of life. Then we painted words and pictures on each side of the lantern before it was lit and rose into the air. It was lovely to take part in this cultural tradition, and even though hundreds of people did the same, we never had to wait more than a couple of minutes for any part of the process. The Street is a mix of modern and traditional, and set each side of the railway line. There are lovely waterfalls about 20 mins walk away if you have time. Highly recommend a visit.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 14 March 2024
- Jeff KPittsburgh, Pennsylvania2,365 contributionsUnique ExperienceThe main (perhaps only) reason for stopping here is to make a lantern and send it high in to the sky. We had a lot of fund doing it and it was a unique experience. You put your wishes on the sides of the pre-made lantern and the shopkeeper lights it for you and you let it fly off. Surprised that they don’t burn the woods down but they claim that the rainy climate minimizes the risk. They also pay people to bring them back so that they don’t litter the countryside. A great activity if you’re in the area.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 March 2024
- David MOslo, Norway237 contributionsEnjoy!I just loved experiencing the train leaving and all the people having to move off the railway track. I also enjoyed sending up a lantern in tribute to my Chinese friends and just actually visiting this place. This is not somewhere to stay for a long time. I just wish I had had the time to visit places such as Jiufen and other beautiful places close by. Would I return, if I was showing someone around who had not visited before. There are so many other wonderful places to discover in Taiwan. Enjoy!Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 14 April 2024
- Wei TSingapore, Singapore599 contributionsTouristy streetA street lined with shops on both sides of the railway track. Most shops are selling either souvenirs, snacks, or the highlight of this area - sky lanterns. A little upset that our driver brought us to a shop that sold the rainbow sky lantern at 400twd instead of 350twd that most shops charge thereVisited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 22 May 2024
- 639abbieCanberra, Australia1,408 contributionsTouristy but still charmingIt’s a bit too touristy but still has its charm with the central emphasis being those wanting to release their lantern. It’s not cheap but not too expensive yet everyone seems to enjoy the endeavour. Food stalls are nice but bit pricey and there’s this ridiculous train running through the middle of the town where people are releasing lanterns just 30 seconds before. You just had to be there.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 September 2024

We took the train to Ruifang Railway Station(瑞芳車站), and then transferred to the Shenzhen-Ao Branch Line(深澳線) to Shifen Station(十分車站). Next to the railway, we wrote down our visions for our family's health身體健康, exams and studies學業猛進, wealth財源滾滾,財庫飽滿 and Optimistic future prospects光明的未來. We lit a flame點燃火苗 on the oil photo paper油紙, and the sky was beautiful. The lamp 天燈slowly flies to the sky, promises a beautiful and happy family vision, to be very successful and happy!(美麗成功幸福的願景)

A lot of tourists flock in this old street to fly lanterns. The rail track is sometimes congested which could be dangerous especially when a train is approaching. Although there are guards who give reminders, some tourists do not follow instructions right away. There should be more warning signs and safety measures.
If you want to come here, avoid peak hours.

I didn't have high expectations, thinking it would just be a lantern, but it was surprisingly fun to write your wish and send it flying. There were overwhelmingly more Japanese, Koreans, and locals, with only a few Westerners. I wrote my wish on the red lantern that was prepared for me, but each color has a different wish, so I chose a store that lets you choose. It does get a bit pricey if you use two or four colors. Some young Japanese people write dirty jokes as a joke, but even locals can read kanji, so it's embarrassing, so I prefer to write in hiragana. I recommend going during the day because you can see more lanterns flying around than at night. The location that is often used for photos in guidebooks is on an active train track, so it's dangerous. Choose a store that you can write your wish on the road next to it or in the vacant lot at the back of the store. It's crowded with people, so be careful of pickpockets.

While he was going to Jiufen, he went well enough and enjoyed raising the lantern. If you are going to go to Jiufen in the evening, it is enough to go the afternoon before that. Reservations were made in advance so we could raise the lantern immediately in a long line. Reservations are recommended in advance. We still recommend the ornate 8-color lantern for raising the lantern.

I visited the Ten Buddhas in a heavy rain. After a two-hour wait for a train to return from a warning of heavy rain, the service was suspended.
I couldn't get any Ubers or taxis anymore, and I followed the flow of locals and found a local bus running and packed, but I was able to get out of Taipei in about an hour and a half.
Even on such a heavy rainy day, the lantern seemed to be raised, and the lantern that fell into the turbid river was washed away. Even if you don't use plastic, you wonder what the environment is like.

Up into the hills in an old diesel rail motor, you travel between two rows of shops into Shifen. The town is famous for the scenic waterfalls a couple of km down the hill, but the old street will take you there. It has all manner of food treats and souvenirs to keep you amused. Many people buy lanterns on which they paint their wishes and then send aloft. The train can be taken from Ruifang on the Pingxi line

Yes I know it is great fun for visitors to write their wishes on the sky lanterns and then release them into the sky. But this is not exactly environmentally friendly - I could see remnants of sky lanterns everywhere as I approached the Shifen area (hillside, trees and one even drifted into the Shifen Waterfall). I was told the lanterns were made of waxed paper but some looked suspiciously like plastic to me. And to try to release them on a short stretch of the old street with a crowd of tourist jostling for position was not exacting the most romantic experience. Do not wear your designer shoes/clothes for this experience - the shops where we wrote the wishes on the lanterns using ink and ink brushes were very crowded and I actually saw ink being splashed on shoes. Yes the whole thing was good for a few photos but I just hope this custom is replicated at other places.

By the time you get to the end of the street, many locals and tourists were seen with wonder on their faces. The long tradition of Tian Deng was is still alive here. Charming railway and track. Bit concerned about polluting aspects of lanterns.

hi, i notice that the sky lantern looks really beautiful when the sky starts to turn dark. What time does the sky turn slightly dark at Shifen Old Street? Thank you in advance

Hi I'm planning a half day trip out of Taipei in November with the missus and kids to Shifen just for the lanterns and of cos the food. Does anybody have a public transport option or a driver to recommend? Thanks in advance!
Written 26 July 2019
Half day can be a little short of time considering the travel time to and from that can last almost an hour each way not to mention a traffic. I would recommend to check from "Klook" specially if you're travelling with kids, less hassle rather taking your own way to go Shifen by bus which I'm not sure if there is direct bus from Taipei Main Station.

I hope to see the Ping Xi Lanterns Festival this year but I will only be arriving on the 14th of September 2019 and I heard that the mass light up will be on the 13th. I know you can light up lanterns at any other time but I want to see the huge amounts light up the sky. So my question is, will there be substantial crowd lighting up the lanterns over the weekend or would it be just for that one day? Will the other festivities also finish on that one day?

It is a must or will always be recommended in every tourist itinerary to at least experience this activities whenever your in Taiwan so it is expected to have a handful tourist anytime of the day, everyday.

今月台北に行きます
半日で「九分」を見てから「十分」でランタン飛ばしをしたいと思っています
九分から十分までの移動の仕方がわかりません
どなたか、教えて下さい
Written 6 April 2018
バスかタクシーで九份から瑞芳(ルイファン、Ruifang)駅まで行き、平渓線に乗って十分へどうぞ。瑞芳駅から十分駅まで30-40分で到着です。一時間に一本くらいしかありませんのでご注意ください。

If we're not interested in lanterns is it still worthwhile to go to Shifen? We'll definitely be going to Juifen.

Is it alright, if you are OK to view how such a village looked in the past near a currently serviced train service.
If you are a little more adventurous, you can hire electric scooter to reach the shifen waterfall within 5 minutes.

4月に台湾に行きます。十分のランタン のお土産についてです。十分駅前のお店でミニランタン に書道家の方が文字を入れてくれるサービスがあると聞きました。どなたかご存知の方はいますか?お店の名前が分かれば教えて下さい。
Written 10 December 2017

Hi, we have 1.5 days and am wondering if we should use Taipei as our base to travel to jiufen, shifeng, Yeliu, shilin night market, rouhe night market and maybe also danshui. We will be coming from Maoli on a Fri late morning and will be leaving Taiwan on Sun noon. There are 5 of us with a few seniors, one of whom is 70+. we plan to book a vehicle to bring us around. Any recommendation? If possible, would love to visit sun, moon lake.
Written 11 September 2016
Yes, you can use Taipei as your base. I would recommend you to charter a mini van or vehicle for 5 of you for this 1.5 days. Jiufen, shifen and yeliu would need nearly whole day. You would most likely be only able to go to one of the night markets. Depending on how many hours is your 0.5 days, you may be able to visit Danshui. Sun Moon Lake is very unlikely in 1.5 days. As you have seniors and you have to walk in all the places, especially upward walking in Jiufen, you may have to forgo a couple of places. Enjoy your trip.
Written 12 September 2016
Is it better to book a cab tour (NT3500) from Taipei to Jiufen and Shifen or take the train and bus option (which are much cheaper)?
We have a group of 5, which 4 of them are over the age of 55.
Any advice?
Written 5 March 2016
Go to klook website and there is a mini bus that cost S$21 each two ways. Just to let you know that at Jiufen you will need to climb around 150 to 200 steps up.
Written 18 December 2017
Do you rent two or three months at a time. Are the rooms fully equipped. What is the rate?
Written 18 January 2015
Hi Donald, I agree if you find other place to stay, as Shifen itself is easily reached by train, which attraction is right by the train station. It's a nice place for 1-2 hour or so.
