In our 22 day trip, Lukang was the place that impressed us the most. It is small enough to walk around and the town has kept its authentic centre free from modern development. The best place to soak in history from its temples and shops many of which have remained unchanged for years. There are a good range of dining options and the town deserves to be on everyone's itinerary of Taiwan.

"Lukang" means "Deer Port." For many years, one of Taiwan's major exports were deer parts, which were exported through Lukang, hence the name. Lukang is an important and prosperous city. There are many temples, which often hold interesting festivals. These days, there are many things to see; it's worth exploring the back streets. By the way, the traditional Taiwanese cuisine, which is hailed as a culinary delight, is relished by visitors.

We stayed one night in Lugang (Lukang).

It's hard to find a parking and the streets can be confusing on google maps but we managed to find our way to the hotel and the most important things to see in the town.

The town has many small alleys, red-brick streets and lined with traditional buildings and snack shops. The longshan temple and old part of the town are the most exciting things of the city.

The town is charming at the day, we walked through the narrow streets and bought some tea and enjoyed watching the small shops and local activities during the day, but at the night there was nothing much to do since most of shops and activities shutdown early.

This town worth a day trip.

Heard about
Ugandan and wanted to visit for a long long time. Actually, postponed by bad weather or typhoon for at least three times for the last two months or so. Anyway, it was raining when we exited the highway and wondered whether we should turn around and come again in the future instead. By the time we arrived at A CHEN Meat Baozi, the rained stoped and made a perfect time to have our Lugano visit (great weather after raining, fresh air and not humid, plus not tourists to avoid crowds). We went to Nine curve lane, then Lugano Old Street. It was my first visit ever and I was very impressed about the old street. It was very nice to play with three nice kitties at one of stores. Every single building is an ancient, very stylish architecture. The posting outside of each doors really remind me good old days and memories when I was a kid. The last stop for this trip is Tian Yao Temple which is a four hundred some years Mazu temple. You can sense it’s very special when you near or entered it.
I’m glad that I finally fulfilled my dream to come and wish I’ll be back next year to Mazu Temple.

On Sunday afternoon I went for a visit with my son and granddaughters, the temple was solemn; we had a little something to eat and walked around sightseeing all the small shops along many streets. It's a nice ride for the whole family!!

If you have a day off in Taichung area, I strongly recommend you to visit Lugang. Now it is a small town, but once it was one of the most important ports of Taiwan. There are many temples and narrow lanes. It is really lovely.

I took a public bus from Changhua City (about 35 minutes) to Lukang. Armed with a good map (essential for exploring Lukang), I set out to cover as much of this outdoor museum as possible. While most of Lukang is like any other small city in Taiwan, the parts that are of interest are fascinating and a joy to explore. Narrow lanes, old temples, Art Deco-style buildings, colorful markets, traditional Chinese architecture, museums and more. Although some of the old neighborhoods contain a few too many tourist shops, the well preserved houses are worth seeing. I spent almost an entire day here. If you have the time I would recommend staying overnight to enjoy exploring Lukang in the early morning or evening when the crowds/tourists have left.

When visiting here, you can immediately feel the richness of history and smell the past . As one of the most important harbors in the ancient Taiwan, Lukang was Taiwan's second largest city after current Tainan and was larger than Bangka (now a district of Taipei), then the island's third-largest city.
You could find almost anything interesting here, from local food, tasty beverages, toys and to stylish souvenirs of most any kind.
If you visit here by any chance, it will be one of the most unforgettable experiences you have ever had.

This is a great place to experience what the ancient Chinese culture must have felt like: An historical old town, many traditional artisan workshops and lots of old temples - a wonderful place to spend a day or two andjust stroll around.

Our second visit to Lukang was even better than our first. We saw the old temples and historic streets again, but this time instead of just walking we took an electric pedicab tour (100nt/per person for a half-hour). The driver was lively and friendly and insisted on how we should take the best tourist pictures. We saw the Artist Village and the Gentleman's Lane as well as beautiful Mazu temples. On our own, we visited the glass museum and the incredible glass temple, as well (during the day--but at night was the real show). We ate our fill in street foods. Can't wait to go back. The prices for souvenirs, gifts, and food are very reasonable.
