This recreation area is like something out of Hell. It has the acrid stink of sulphur. Fumaroles, boiling ponds and natural hot springs add to the hellish atmosphere.. Xiaoyoukeng Recreation Area is like a natural science experiment that went wrong. This natural volcanic area is a fascinating place to visit for young and old.

Xiao You Keng is volcanic recreation area which is like a real-live volcanic science experiment. Xiao You Keng is steamy, with the smell of sulphur. It also has fumaroles, which emit volcani vapors. Xiao You Keng is near Beitou, you can get there by bus or car. Xiao You Keng is an interesting day out, if you like volcanic activity.

Xiaoyoukeng Recreation Area is a volcanic area. It stinks of sulfur. The volcanic air holes, hot springs, landslide terrain and sulphur crystals are all connected to the Yangmingshan National Park. It's like the gates of Hell, or a giant outdoor natural science exhibition. Xiaoyoukeng has a tourist centre, it's open most days from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm.

This volcanic area is like a live outdoor science experiment, It has brilliant yellow sulfur crystals, with volcanic vents. Xiaoyoukeng Recreation Area has some landslips, but it's fun to visit. You can get there by bus, but car is easier. The Beitou area is known for its volcanic activity.

Xiaoyoukeng Recreation Area is a giant outdoor science experiment. It has a spook atmosphere, with steam issuing from vents in the floor. The area is volcanically active. Bright yellow sulphur crystals can be found on the surface. Xiaoyoukeng is a popular day out from Taipei, You can take the bus, but driving is easier.

Xiaoyoukeng Recreation Area is a naturally volcanic region with volcanic air holes, hot springs, landslide terrain and sulphur crystals. It is connected to the Yangmingshan National Park. It's a great outdoor natural science exhibition. Xiaoyoukeng has a tourist centre, open most days from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm. By the way, you can get a bus, but it's easier and less time consuming if you drive.

Tips to enjoy this place:
1) Book a private car especially if you want to walk less yet cover more spots on this Yangmingshan mountain national park. Car drop off point is only 50 metres to the viewing point of Xiaoyoukeng.

2) Be nerdy, read up in advance on Xiaoyoukeng, means "small oil pit" on Mt Qixing - highest point in Taipei at 1120 metres above sea level so from here, you'll be able to see the rest of the mountains. Great to plan this as a first stop and work your way down. Love reading the informative and clear information panels at the viewing points at this park.

3) If you're into geography and rock formations etc, the museum at nearby Lengshuikeng (not Xiaoyoukeng) Recreation Area is the one that displays and explains the different kinds of rocks and their formations, as well as the use of these fumes/ fumaroles.

4) Xiaoyoukeng is famous for the sulphur-dioxide 'yellow gas' emitting from the fumaroles on this volcano. Beware of some small ones along the footpath too. Super cool and ethereal sight, especially with the mountain full of silver grass. One of favourite wedding photoshoot spots. Also because the famous Sun Yanzi shot her 天黑黑Cloudy Day MTV here.

5) Check the weather before going. Best to visit on clear sunny summer days and avoid cloudy winter days. But you never know, we visited on 11th November, the beginning of winter and the day was extremely clear! It could be just a tolerable 15 degrees celsius but the winds will send the chills down your spine. Bring wind breaker jackets.

It was extremely windy and sunny when we visited. The fumaroles were interesting and were easy to walk to along the boardwalk.

Must see when you visit in Taipei. There is a real volcano under your feet! Visit for free, except for the cheap parking fee.
第一次造訪此處便被眼前的景象所震撼,這裡絕對有成為國際景點的潛力,可以感受到大屯火山群真實的就在我們周圍。

After we visited the National Palace Museum, we had few hours before we had to go the airport. So, a visit to this volcanic mountain is a good educational visit. However, lots of cloud so we can only see not that far.
