On one side you see the original train station, which is heavily influenced by Japanese colonial architecture and next to it is a new futuristic and spacious train station where we took our trains. The grounds outside is also very spacious and you can see various modern art and sculptures, spread around. Location is very central, right next to the bus terminal. This station is indeed very well designed.

Some in Taichung affectionately refer to this as three generations under one roof in reference to what Chinese would consider to be a blessing of grandparents, parents and grandchildren living in the same household. This station has all three iterations of the station building. Only the foundation and low walls remain from the first. The second building is from the Japanese era and now used as exhibition space. The third and most modern has a beautiful roof that some people think look like a whale, a sail or even a turtle shell. Other than that, The station has great facilities with automated ticket machines and plenty of shops. There's also lots of public artworks dotted in and around the station.

I really enjoyed the exhibition in the old station building with all the different ideas. I thought that Taiwan was very good at renovating things like using abandoned railways to turn them into parks. The exhibition also touched me to understand the history of the people who built the railway.

When I arrived here the first time almost 20 years ago, the train station was a gorgeous, old, Japanese grandmother. Today it is an elegant, young, Taiwanese beauty, connecting trains and busses, and allowing access to businesses, hotels, and shops south and north of the station. Check out the neighborhood and find hundreds of shops and stalls nearby, that offer everything and anything!

Courteous staff, Tourist information center with English speaking & helpful staff, has all the facilities, next to city bus stop, clean... what else do you need at a station when you arrive in a new town?

In Tourist information center they even have different powered reading glasses to facilitate you just in case you can't find your reading glasses!
The station has all facilities which it should have.

I think this building was built during the time of the Japanese occupation, 1895-1945.
Like all Tw train stations there are many places to buy your food and drinks, even a place to get a library book (in Chinese).
If you have questions, go to the Info booth to the far right of the building. It is not inside the main portion of the terminal. Keep in mind the booth is only staffed during normal business hours.
They overbook the trains, so you may find someone in your Reserved seat. Just show them your ticket, look polite, and they will move to someone else's seat (until they come). These squatters will stand around or sit on the floor for their entire trip or watch for an empty seat. Their tickets are cheaper and they make do.

Taichung station has kept its looks and flavour even after having their HSR station near it. Great place to take pictures and to hang out as there are alot of restaurants and shops around it.
