During our last few days in Iceland, my wife and I headed out to Reykjanes to explore various sites in that part of Iceland. The Reykjanes Lighthouse was the first place we visited. When we visited this lighthouse, there were not as many visitors as we had seen at other sites in and around greater Reykjavik. We learned that The first lighthouse in Iceland was built on in Reykjanes in 1878. However, a 1905 earthquake ultimately necessitated its demolition. A new lighthouse was completed in 1908.

This lighthouse has the traditional cylindrical shape. It is white with a painted red top and stands approximately 85 feet tall. The lighthouse also has a two-story residence for the lighthouse keeper. There is not much in the area around the lighthouse, but the landscape is picturesque and well worth a stop for photographs.

Driving around the peninsula on our last full day in Iceland, loved seeing some not-often visited sites. This lighthouse is one, and further on past is a haven for climbers and hikers on the hills and lava fields. A company was there filming . . .something.

If you are making your way around the peninsula, or have to pass some time after your arrival at Keflavik before you check in to your accommodations, two great places to pass the time are the Gunnuhver Hot Spring and nearby Reykjanes Lighthouse. The lighthouse is picturesque and, framed with the lupines that carpet the ground, makes for a great photo-opportunity. From here, you can either walk or drive to the lighthouse.

If you want to explore Reykjanes Peninsula, which I highly recommend, you should add Reykjanes Lighthouse to your itinerary. The area was filled with lupines when we visited in early June. Such a beautiful sight! Walk up to the lighthouse for a beautiful vantage point of the ocean. You can then drive towards the coast and explore that area.

As we were driving along Reykjanes, we took a quick photo stop to snap a photo of the lighthouse. We didn't have time to explore the lighthouse per se, but the surrounding area was very picturesque.

Travelling on the 454 road, we just turned off onto a small dirt road to see what the big building was in the distance, turns out it is a 100MW Reykjanes Geothermal Power station.
Exploring further we found the Reykjanes Lighthouse up on its hill overlooking the ocean, the scenery all around is quite atmospheric and there is no-one around, which adds to the eeriness of the stark lava fields.

A good view of the Lighthouse, along with picturesque cliffs you can climb and also a nice view out to sea and Eldey Island in the far distance.

The views of the lighthouse and from the lighthouse are stunning.

We drove here before a visit to the Blue Lagoon. Early evening sun was beautiful.

The lighthouse is on a raised hill back from the coast but you can go to the coast and get quite close to the sea stacks.

Amazing end of the world feel to thos place.

The fulmers are great fun to watch. There are literally thousands of them in this area.

The lighthouse is perched atop a hill that is not too far from some massive cliffs that overlook the ocean. The lighthouse looks really cool and the views are quite magnificent. It is fairly close to Gunnuhver.

The lighthouse is relatively new as it replaced an old one. The shores near by are quite beautiful as you can see large waves crashing onto the shore. Nothing special but a nice view of the surrounding area
