This Bhadrakali temple is located about 25 km from Kannur town. Though government buses are available from Kannur to Pazhayangadi, a nearby place, it is recommended to hire a cab from Kannur, for visiting both Bhadrakali temple and Sri Raja Rajeswara temple in the nearby Taliparamba town, which would cost around Rs.1200/- .
People mainly worship her to get rid of the effects of black magic. Along with Bhadrakali, there are saptamatruka and ganesh idols.
The temple is open from 5.30 am to 1.00 pm and again from 5.00 pm to 8.00 pm.
It is to be noted that "Shatrusamhara" pooja is performed only at 1 pm.

Thiruvarkadu Bhagavathi Temple as widely known as Madayi Kavu is the mother temple of all Bhadrakali shrines of North Kerala. The deity is the Fierce form of Bhadrakali.
The temple opens at 05:00 am and closes at 8.30pm.
For men (including male child) shirts and banyans are not allowed to wear if one want to enter the temple.
Address: Madayi Para, Pazhayangadi, Kerala 670 334.
Buses are available from Payyanur, Kannur, Taliparamba(nearest town stations) to Pazhayangadi. Madayi Kavu(Thiruvarkadu Bhagavathi Temple) is situated just 1.5km away from Pazhayangadi bus stand.
Parking is available those who come on their own vehicle. Annadanam is provided for all devotees.
Regular offerings at Madayi Kavu(Thiruvarkadu Bhagavathi Temple) are Pushpanjali, Raktha Pushpanjali, Thikala Pushpanjali, Sharkara Payasam, Akapooja, Gurusipooja, Karinkalasam, Offering of Silver Statue, Offering of Leaf and Tongue, Offering of Pepper, Offering of Thottil and Child, Offering of Red Cloth, Chekkimala, Thirumadhuram, Offering of Swarnathali, Vella Nivedyam, Choroon, Rakshapooja, Dheharaksha (Urukku, Sudarshana Chakra), Shathrusamharapooja, Valiyapooja, Annadanam, Niramala etc.

Thiruvarkadu Bhagavathi Temple (a.k.a. Madayi Kavu) is the mother temple of all Bhadrakali shrines of North Kerala. The deity is the Fierce form of Bhadrakali. The Bhagavathy is addressed by tantrics in the vicinity as Tiruvarkkad Achchi due to this. The temple administration is Malabar Devaswom Board. The temple is a revered shrine of Chirakkal Royal Family and a shrine of Chirakkal devaswom before. The temple is situated in Madayi, Payangadi, hence prominently known as Madayi Kavu.
There are different folklore about the origin of the temple. One of the legend says, The Bhagavathy, Madayikkavilamma was residing in the Rajarajeshwara Temple. But, as she was non-vegetarian she could not exist in the Shiva temple. She ordered the then King of that region to construct a separate shrine for her.
In another legend, long ago Madayi was troubled by a demon Darika and Madayikavilamma killed him and requested Shiva to enshrine in a temple near him. Lord Shiva ordered his disciple Parashuram to consecrate a shrine for the Shakti. Parashurama created the Madayippara and the Holy shrine on it. The shrine is considered the last resort for the removal of Occult Sorcery (Black Magic and Witchcraft).
There used to be a "strothasamuchayam" known as "panchasthavi" in Kashmir province. There were Laghustuthi, ghatasthi, charchasthuthi, Ambasthuthi, sakalajananeestuthi. These five came unbder "sreevidyasambrathaaya" which stipulates like Aanavopayam, Saakthopayam, saambhavopayam, anupoyam etc. These were practiced by the Bhattakaaras of kashmir. One of the Bhattakarar travelled from kashmir towards south and he has built 13 temples of saakthyaaradhana. they are from north starting from Mannampurath kavu of Neeleswaram, Thiruvarkkattu kavu or Madaayi kavum, Kalarivathulkkavu of Valapattanam, Mamanikkunnu kavu near Mattannur, Thiruvancheri kavu near Koothuparambu, Kaliyam kavu near edacheri of Vadakara, Koyilandi kollam pisharikkavu, thiruvalayanaadu kavu of Kozhikode, Modikkunnathu kavu near Pattambi, Thirumandamkunnu kavu of Angadipurath, Kodungallurkkavu, Muthoot kavu of Thiruvalla, Panayannar kavu of Mannar near thiruvalla.
The Pradanmar or the Brahmins performed the poojas came from Kashmir and they practiced Saaktheya pujas, which is practiced here at Madaayikkavu

Thiruvarkaattu Bhagavathi temple is the mother temple of all the Bhadrakali shriness of North Kerala. This temple is located very near to famous Madayipara, Payangadi, hence prominently known as Madayikav. This location is very beautiful and echo friendly surroundings are there. We can spend our time there very happily.

Considered to be the Mother of all Bhadrakali temples in North Kerala, Thiruvarkadu Bhagavathi Temple, is located in Madayi, near Pazhayangadi in Kannur district, and hence derives this prominent nomenclature ‘Madayi Kavu. The deity is “the Fierce form of Bhagavathy” and the folklore associated with the origin of the temple are countless.
According to one legend, the Bhagavathy (Goddess Kali), “Madayik-kavil-amma”, is said to be residing in the Rajarajeshwara Temple (an ancient Shiva temple located at Taliparamba, about 14 km east of Madayi in Kannur district). As she happened to be a non-vegetarian, she could not reside in the Shiva temple. Hence, she had ordered the then King of that region to construct this separate shrine for her.
Another legend goes this way: long ago Madayi was frequently troubled by a demon by name ‘Darika’ and since ‘Madayikavilamma’ destroyed the demon and then requested Lord Shiva to enshrine in a temple near him, He had ordered his disciple ‘Parashuram’ to consecrate a shrine for the Shakti. Thus Parashurama had created the ‘Madayippara’ and this Holy shrine on it. Hence for devotees, the temple is the last resort for the alleviation of troubles related to the Occult Sorcery and witchcraft.
The dress code inside the ‘sanctum sanctorum’ for Men: Traditional ‘Mundu’ is allowed and no shirt or other upper inner garments are allowed and for Women: ‘Saree’, ‘Set Mundu’ and blouse are allowed.
The temple is also popular for the Theyyam festival conducted annually, in the Malayalam month of Idavam (April/May). Theyyam festivals are often known by the name “Kaliyattam” or “Perumkaliyattam”, and are fascinating medley of colours and cultures.
The temple also celebrates many other festivals: ‘Pooram Mahostavam’ is one of the major festivals here annually. The festival begins on the ‘Karthika’ asterism in the Malayalam month of ‘Meenam’ and ends with the ‘arattu’ (ceremonial bath), known as ‘Pooram Kuli’ at the ‘Vadakunda Pond’ in Madayi on ‘Pooram’ asterism, while the ‘Makara Pattulsavam’, from the 1st of the Malayalam month of ‘Makaram’ (January-February) to 13th of the same month. The ritual dance of ‘Maaritheyyam’ is normally held in Madayi Kavu, on the 16th of the Malayalam month of ‘Karkidakam’ (August). It is a ritual performed by the ‘Pulaya’ community of North Malabar. Six Theyyams are performed in this group performance, namely ‘Maari Kaliyan’, ‘Mamaaya Kaliyan’, ‘Maari Kalichi’, ‘Mamaaya Kalichi’, ‘Maari Kuliyan’ and ‘Mamaaya Kuliyan’. The costumes are generally made of tender coconut leaves.

I am mohanraj driver from bangalore. I interested to take darshan of mother as well as to join in perform shathru samahara homam. At what time pooja starts. At what time I have to be in temple. Shall I come with 5 years old child.

Shatru samhara pooja is performed around 12.30 pm - 1.00 pm. You can go early and buy the ticket. Prasadam will be given around 1.30 pm. Children are allowed.
They may not perform the pooja in front of you.
