About
Soak in nature at its best—Grutas Tolantongo is home to hot springs and a cave and tunnel complex, surrounded by lush, tropical vegetation. Camp overnight, or check yourself into a hotel near the man-made pools that cascade down the mountainside. For the more adventurous, there’s a suspension bridge, zipline, and a cave system with shoulder-deep water and bats flying overhead. Wear appropriate shoes with enough grip to handle the slippery rocks and tunnels. You’ll find several restaurants and bars and shops to purchase provisions. Bring sufficient cash—even the hotels in the area don’t accept credit cards. – Tripadvisor

Of the worst. Terrible is a compliment. A real shame in putting in as many people as possible without any control. Thousands of people, almost without space to park, although they charge without knowing if there is space or not. Nothing is comfortable. It's all extreme ups and downs and stairs everywhere. It is not a place for people of a certain age, much less small children, and disabled people not even in their dreams, of course, they don't say that. In its nature and design it is beautiful, but why else can you enjoy it with more people, dangerous spaces, and uncomfortable access. A terrible experience, we were inside for about 30 minutes, just to see the disaster. I don't recommend it at all.

I have mixed feelings about Tolantongo. While the scenery is absolutely breathtaking, the experience was a little disappointing.
We rented a car in Mexico City and drove there on our own. It took us about 4 hours. The roads were perfectly fine getting there, although the last 20 minutes of driving is around very curvy windy high mountainous roads. A little scary if you ask me. You have to be very careful and should be an experienced driver.
We chose to get a hotel room at Paradaiso escondido near the man-made pools. We asked for a high up room facing the pools and mountains. The hotel room was very rustic and plain, but the balcony and view more than made up for that.
What was disappointing for me was that there were tents everywhere on the hotel grounds with a bunch of loud and obnoxious people cooking and yelling all through the day and night. There were kids running around from pool to pool and just ruining the ambiance.
The temperature of the pools weren't that warm which was also disappointing. The rivers were slightly warmer and the tunnel and cave were the warmest. It's just so crowded that you can't really enjoy the atmosphere. We went on a Wednesday in the winter so I can't even imagine what it would be like on the weekend. If I had the time I would have liked to go to La Gloria. It looked more peaceful and natural.
One last thing I would like to mention, is that they empty the pools in the morning to clean them. They dont fill them up until 12:00 p.m. so if you get up in the morning and want to go in the pools...you are out of luck. If you stay 1 night, they make you pay for 2 days of parking and park passes. We left the next morning and they refused to give us our money back for parking and passes. They said if I wanted my money back I should have left at 700am instead of 8:30 a.m. even though the pools aren't available to use.
All in all, I'm still glad I experienced it because it was beautiful... but just know the water isn't that warm and it's very crowded.

We went in a van organised by our hotel Zocalo Central through Estur Travels. Left by around 6 am. Round trip was 14 hours and the experience was fantastic. Break for tea/coffee and later breakfast. First we visited the waterfall and cave. Strongly recommend take beach shoes and head lamp. You need a towel to wipe after swimming and sunscreen. Waterproof phone case our driver sold for M$150. Water depth is about 3 feet max and warm about 38C. Then we walk to the river and swim in the river. Water is slow flowing and warm and so blue due to dissolved magnesium and calcium. Then we drove in the van to the pools. It’s a great visual sight and water pools are like a spa. So relaxing you don’t want to get out. Then on the way back we stopped for local Mexican barbecue for late lunch. As usual in July it rained in the late evening while driving back to Mexico City. Reached back by 8 pm.Don’t miss out on the trip to the thermal springs at Tolongtongo.

My friends and I decided to visit this place where we were recommended to visit. It took about 3-4hrs travel from CDMX. We were welcomed with beautiful nature of San Cristobal’s valley and it was foggy. We tried the hot bath but it was not a natural thermal bath. We did not try the river because the place was so crowded with locals and campers. Worth a trip and the entrance fee only MXN150.

Little jewel that hardly anyone outside locals knew about when I was there. If I’d do it again I would do it the local way with tents and grills and camping style instead of their rooms in the hotel like building they have. Gorgeous place, so much to do and see, the grotto was out of this world beautiful and the river is the color blue I’ve never seen before! Weekdays over weekends due to crowding though. Highly recommend!

A spectacular place. Its light blue thermal waters are worth enjoying. I recommend going on a weekday since it is super crowded on the weekend.
Disadvantage: If you go to the grotto, do not take a backpack of any kind, even if it is waterproof. They are going to make you leave your things in a locker for which you have to pay. The thing is that to get to the point where they tell you that you can't pass with your backpack, you've already CLIMBED ENOUGH and you think about it before returning (if you rented a locker downstairs), I did return. I think this is a catch so that you have to pay again because there could well be a person below to prevent you from passing things.
For everything else it was super good.

Three hours from CDMX is this gift that keeps giving. Airbnb experiences have some wonderful groups that can drive small groups up to this place. It’s amazing. From the hot springs to the natural waterfall and just another place that Mexico hides so well! This was one of my favourite days on my entire month trip!

I am Hidalguense and visited this place yesterday. The landscape is the only thing worthwhile. Dismal customer service, super dangerous car arrival, curves are heart attack. The stairs and ramps to access the super dangerous pools. People aplenty, horrible food, facilities in terrible condition. Worst place to go on vacation. DON'T GO. A thousand times better a spa of Ixmiquilpan. I arrived at 8:30 and left at 11:30 because I couldn't take any more.... On the way out, a crane lifting a tour car that had just flipped over on one of the bends.

What an incredible experience. This park is worth the drive and anything else that might happen on the way. We just wished we had more time to explore the surrounding areas. A trip worth making a second and third time. Make sure you bring Cash No CC are accepted and the only phone service is Tel Cel.
It’s was AMAZING.

My family and I are planning a trip to visit tolantingo . However, does anyone know of a transportation or Tour group that would drive us up one day drop us off and pick us up again two days later for round-trip fair?

Saludos
