The Praia de Itapuã is a palm-fringed, sandy beach & sea-turtle nesting spot with water sports & food/drink stands. I had to visit here because of the Brazilian song “Tarde em Itapoa” (by Toquinho & Vinícius de Moraes)—if you’ve never heard it, look it up (you will probably love it).
Itapuã is a neighborhood in the north part of the city of Salvador in the state of Bahia, which is famous for its culture, cuisine, history and architecture. If you’re in Salvador, you should come up to see this famous beach, the nearby lighthouse and the great restaurants. You won’t be disappointed.

Amazing long shore beach with many bars, live music and just great atmosphere. Loved every minute. The water is clear, the sun is shining, perfect place. Very easy reachable by public transportation from Centro.

The Itapuã beach is a small but charming beach. It a famous beach in the entire Brazil because of brazilian popular musics. Anyway, it is worth to be visited.

There are some cool beach bars along Itapua Beach just a short local bus ride from Mar Brasil Hotel where we were staying. The beach itself is beautiful.

Well kept, the beach had good vibrations. The vendors and people on the beach were all having fun, which made it easy for us to feel comfortable. Lots of sitting areas with umbrellas. Drinks and great seafood were available at good prices. R50 for fried fish, rice and salsa that could feed two. R10 -15 drinks. R4 fresh green coconut water. Swimming limited, but enjoyable. Families with small children kept to the rock pool areas. Currents were very strong, but water was warm and clear. Enjoyable.

The beach itself is nice but the area is surrounded by shanty towns, so DO NOT bring any valuables with you, don't show any bracelets or pendants, especially on sunny weekends, when it tends to get overcrowded!

Itapua beach, sang in the verses of brazilian poets about its earthly peaceful paradise is certainly not the same anymore.

The beach is very agitated with people coming from various places, but specially from the low-class neighborhood of itapua.

On the other hand, there is a good variety of food and beverages and prices are good. Just to be sure to go in a group and pay attention to what is happening.

The beach is recently (2015) being reformed, with new sidewalks, a mirante and other additions. Worth the visit.
