for 2024 summer, the road to assy plateau is in a relatively bad condition. lots of scree and some washed out sections.

i assume it is worse than usual because nobody was using the road when it is inexplicably closed for 2 months in june and july. some say it is due to flood risk, some say other money-related shenanigans, like most things in central asia, you never know the full story

awd with high clearance would be challenging (though not impossible) on scree while climbing uphill slope, so i suggest coming with 4wd

Highland with lots of horses on the pastures. Silent nice nature, amazing fields of blue flowers, at least in June.

Kazakhstan is the home of three amazing things. Two things are confirmed by examining of genotype: wild apples and tulips are the ancestors of all apple trees and tulips growing in other places. The third thing: the horse was domesticated first on the territory of modern Kazakhstan, it has been confirmed by archaeological research.

Participants of our voyage were representatives of Kazakhfilm company, and invited by them reporters of print media known on the whole world.

We arrived by jeep to the huge mountain valley named Assy, where the Kazakh herdsmen put yurts as well as 5000 years ago. On the altitude of 2500 meters above sea level, the grass is green all the warm season, and herds of horses, is always provided with food.

We have set up camp at the heart of the valley, where we were surrounded by horses, herding dogs, and even cute gray donkey :-)

There we were enjoyed a paradise view of the valley, ate a delicious lunch and fed the animals. At the end of the journey we rode on horseback, caressed a huge dog and talked with cheerful herdsmen :-)

We came here as part of a 5 day SUV guided trip covering multiple national parks which are all close to each other. We did a 4WD route from Bartoghai Lake to the Red Cliffs, then to the highland pastures (Zhailau) and finally to the Soviet observatory at an altitude of 2,600 before heading down towards Turgen gorge area. In summer the highland areas are spectacular, with sweeping vistas of the zhailaus and views of snow-capped mountains and tens of thousands of horses and other cattle gazing the pastures. You will also seek working nomads and genuine yurts (not the cheap plastic yurts typically made for tourist accommodation ). The route is for 4WD only as there are multiple river crossings and the road is super bad.
