We actually went up as the fog started to roll in, and as we got to the top , it was swirling around us. It was pretty cool, although we couldn't see much for a view.

The drive up the hill is a two lane road built for one car. The view at the top is amazing but can be very windy. Really not worth the time or effort.

The view from the highest point in the island are stunning. It's a winding road up to the top but worth the effort.

Without a doubt, this was the high point of our week in Santorini.

We hired a small car and the drive up was great, while my wife was scared stiff!

The views from the monastery are incredible. There's a great little shop with a good choice of gifts at really reasonable prices. We spent ages up there just sitting and wandering around, enjoying the peace of the chapels and the views.

The only downers were the peace being spoilt by a brash American bloke going on about monks, an American woman loudly going on about being a lesbian while arranging herself and friends for photos and a group of English on quad bikes who thought it ok to rev engines and sound horns in the most peaceful of places! And I think there should be a restriction on the size of coaches and groups to make things more pleasant. Oh, and why is there so much litter left by scumbag tourists? Cans and plastic bottles chucked over the edge... what is the matter with people?

Quite a climb- but worth the view from the top. You get to see the entire island from the top.

The monastery is shut for visitors. But built in the 17th century! Looks striking.

There are a lot of must see things in Santorini and this is definitely one of them. It's not so much for the actual Monastery as this is rather average to look at, but it's the 360 degree breathtaking views you get of the whole island.
We hired a car to tour the island and this is a heart in you mouth drive up to the highest point of all Santorini, especially when a coach is coming towards you down the hill. The road winds around like a corkscrew and is not for the faint hearted.
However, once up there the drive is forgotten and you will be so glad you did it. The photos we got were extraordinary but hey just don't do it justice what the eye sees.
We stopped a couple of times on the way down too to get differing photos from right at the top.

Location/what is it about: The Monastery of Profitis Ilias is built on the highest viewpoint 567m above the sea level in the centre of Santorini. The road to the monastery is impressive with many hairpin bends. Your ears pop because of the rapid increase in altitude. The lookout point outside of the monastery offers breath-taking views. We visited the viewpoint during sunset and blue hour. This provided great photo opportunities. You must watch out for the military base (photography prohibited).

Profitis Ilias is near the village of Pyrgos (medieval settlement). Pyrgos is the former capital of Santorini and one of the last authentic villages on the island (not yet overrun by tourists). A hidden gem / off-the-beaten path.

Admission fee (budget range): Free to visit.

The viewpoint at the Monastery of Profitis Ilias is a must-visit in Santorini, Greece. We will happily revisit.

The monastery is located at the highest point of Santorini and offers panoramic views. There is a small chapel open to the public with a store of products produced locally for sale.

This monastery is right at the top of a hill but there is ample parking so you don't have to hike! You cannot go into the monastery but there is a small chapel you can visit if you are suitably dressed and a small gift shop. The all-round views of the island are really spectacular at any time of the day. There was a guy selling delicious grapes near the entrance too - tasty!
