We went in our car on the ferry across to the island of Chiloe. It only takes about 20 minutes but you can get out of your vehicle and climb some steps and watch the voyage and take pictures. The have toilets on both levels.

These ferries across the canal are the only way to get to Chiloe Island even though the distance is little more than a mile. A bridge is being built but is many years behind schedule so the ferries are still busy. They are run very professionally but still take over an hour to cross this 1 mile due to the time required to load and offload all the cars and trucks. I'll be glad to see a bridge if it ever actually completes.

This body of water separating the island of Chiloe from the mainland is undergoing a fundamental transformation. A new bridge is scheduled to open in 2020, connecting the quiet island to the mainland, all in the name of presumed progress. The ferry business will die, the present half hour crossing time reduced to some three minutes after payment of the toll. The troll Trauco might not be amused with the notion of progress.
