I went to the Mekong area from Saigon with a guide and he accompanied me on a half-day tour of the area. It was impressive. They showed me traditional crafts, food for sale being made, including chocolate and coconut candy, took me on a dugout canoe through the canals, on a horse and buggy, to listen to local singers, and to a temple. They do shuffle the tourists through pretty efficiently, and while I got a whiff of commercialism, it seemed authentic enough to make the trip. They worry climate change will flood the area in 10 years or so, so this will be a thing of the past.

Laos is amazing country and we had a dream came true that's doing a cruise on the Mekong river. There were not much information and we kept finding hard to find a cruise line. There were few choices. Kelvin from Indochinatreks travel organized this cruise + land tour in Laos for us. We had nothing to complain. Amazing scenery along the river, good cruise though basic. Like food and tours by Mekong Sun.

This was one of my favorite tours! Our boat cruised along the Mekong river and we got to see Orangutans chillin' in their natural environment. We also saw a variety of wildlife species.

We had our own boat with toilet facilities, hot and cold drinks and bananas. Took one and a half hours to reach caves, stopping at whisky producing village en-route. As well as conventional seats there were two couches on which to lay back and watch the world go by. Very much enjoyed our boat trip. Lovely scenery with mountains in background.

We spent two days cruising upriver on the Mekong from Luang Prabang, towards our stop for the night in the village of Pak Beng. Then another day cruising before reaching Huey Xai. It was an amazing experience, not to be missed if you have the chance.

The river boat we were on was quite beautiful, plenty of room (see piccies) and there was only five us on the cruise, on a boat that could take about 40 passengers, there was plenty of room to lounge around, read books, take in the sights, with periodic napping. The lunches were sumptuous, enough for everyone to have seconds.

There are many tour companies that offer this service we used Mekong Smiles, (see review).

I thoroughly recommend a Pandaw cruise on the Mekong. Beautiful boat, excellent organisation, delicious food. Just perfect!
In Luang Prabang, we visited the Ok Pop Tok shop where they sell beautiful weavings made by village women. Michael from the Smile Project (Supporting Multitudes in Life & Education) could not have been more helpful with this knowledge of weavings. Well worth visiting on top of all the other wonderful sites.

I have been I seen the Mekong in Thailand, Laos, Cambodia & Vietnam. I was recently in Luang Prabang and I jumped on a chance for a river cruise down the Mekong to the Pak Ou caves. It's a good trip, the mountains that follow the river make for great scenery. So peaceful on the river and we stopped at a village on the river to see their handicrafts and try their local whiskey. The caves were interesting with all their buddha statues inside. So if you are in Luang Prabang it's worth a trip down the Mekong to see the beautiful countryside.
