We decided on our ring road trip to head up the 939 to visit Folaldafoss having seen it on the map and wanting to stop. It didn't look like too much of a detour from the ring road so assumed it was a quick 5 minute detour...WRONG!!!

We were driving on a very wet and windy day having had a storm arrive from across the Atlantic and this meant driving was a little cautious anyway. The 939 although not an F-Road officially is a dirt / gravel road with plenty of pot holes that would make the average 2-wheel drive scream with terror...and if the car doesn't you may when you hear the suspension going like a sewing machine in a power surge!

The road is a mountain pass so as you are going up the incline it is winding and cars coming the other direction mean slowing down is essential. After a good 10 minutes or so (only about 4-5km) we arrived at the car park at the top of a rock that looks down on Folaldafoss. The falls were stunning with that glacial cool blue pool at its base it really was worthwhile driving up there, but maybe something to consider if your a less confident driver and I definitely wouldn't recommend a 2WD unless you have top insurance included!

Stumbled into this waterfall by chance, it is few minutes after turning into the unpaved route 939 driving towards direction. The waterfall is beautiful, worth a short detour. There's a small parking on the side, can accommodate about 5-6 the max.

One of our favorite spots!

The parking is easily seen from road 939.
From the parking, it's an easy hike to the waterfall through uneven trails.
The surroundings were beautiful and the waterfall is amazing. We were mostly alone when visiting here, which made the experience even more enjoyable.

This seemed like a beautiful waterfall to stop and hike to, however the wind was so incredibly intense and cold that we could only stomach taking photos from afar and then running back to the car. It's such a shame because there was a nice trail leading to the waterfall but given the weather conditions we just couldn't do it. And the dirt road traveling past this waterfall was also wild, fun, and intense. I would love to visit this place another time in the future under better conditions.

So we made this stop driving down this dirt road to our next destination. It looks like it could be quite beautiful in the right conditions. Sadly the morning we were there, it was raining heavily and had lots of fog. We still did catch a nice view of it but due to the weather, couldn't get much closer or enjoy it. I think it would be a great stop if nice out.
