This monastery is very near Elafonissos beach. It's not of historical importance, but it's cute, and the views are fantastic!

2€ for 10 minutes of nothing.
Nice view of the sea. You can take pictures in prohibited places.

If you are interested in the historical or spiritual aspects of the Orthodox Church in Crete, this site will not offer you anything much at all. There are no icons of much note, and the ‘museum’ and display of local artefacts is desperately weak, not informative, and sadly we can’t recommend even stopping by for a short visit.

As we were staying in the village we went for a look. Only 2 euros to get in. Worth the climb up the steps to the top for the views.

The road to the monastery was along the side of the amazing topographical landscape that defines the island of Crete. The mountain ranges change from mountains that look like gigantic boulders to flat top ranges and boulder-strewn mountains that rise to the heavens. They are jaw dropping in their varied composition and magnificence. Their magnificence is also the reason that the trip to Elafonisi was so treacherous. The roads snake around the mountain ranges on roads built for small cars and goats. We took a longer route because the shorter route had a small tunnel that couldn't accommodate our coach, even with the skilful driving of our driver. Now let’s consider the "larger" tunnel. Phew. It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a Mercedes coach to go through a tunnel on the edge of the Topolio Gorge. Threading a camel is simple in comparison. We got through it and it was a tight squeeze. Traversing the Topolia Gorge called on every skill George had learned as a driver of 40 years experience. The monastery dates to 1500, is on the small side and requires you to climb a number of steep stairways. There are no elevators to reach the monastery. There are interesting altars in crevices along the way and historical rooms that were used as classrooms. Photographs are allowed in the monastery but not in the historic rooms. As with most Greek churches, the decorations are impressive. The monastery has a stunning location above the sea and supposedly the last few steps at the top of the stairway leading to the monastery are paved in gold and if a person is pure and innocent, they will see the gold steps. All I can say is that I didn’t see the gold steps. Enough said. The decorated egg object hanging from the candelabra hanging from the ceiling in the monastery is an actual ostrich egg. As per usual, there are feral cats everywhere, including one that had two different coloured eyes. That kitten definitely has the evil eye, the blue eye. We should buy an evil eye disc to ward off the evil eye. They are sold everywhere in Greece. After visiting the monastery, we then retraced out steps through the tunnels and winding roads, just in case our blood pressure had returned to normal and our vertigo had disappeared after our trip to the monastery.

After walking around the beach you get to the tip of this peninsula entering well into the sea only to discover this tiny monastery. It is not well taken care of but you do realize that it is still used to the day by devote people. I loved to visit.

This monastery sits out on the Akrotiri peninsula and is a must see site - you do need your own vehicle though. Beautiful flower filled grounds and a lovely building - it is truly beautiful inside. The monks make and sell their own honey, raki and wine in the little on site shop too!

Was stopped off in the Monastery on our way back from Elafonisi, what a beautiful place, really peaceful and calm. Worth a look if you have time (and then stop off at the Sunset taverna on your way back out - you won't be disappointed!)

We came across this monastery on our way to Elafonissi beach.

It is set on a quiet and tranquil area so if you happen to be passing by, make sure to step in to get the feeling of the place. There are couple of displays and a little gift shop perhaps you want to have a look at.

I found it a photogenic monastery with wonderful outlook on the sea and coast. If you are interested about the story behind it, the Sisters will be more than happy to tell you about it. They are very welcoming and treated us with fresh water and loukoumi.
