The most magical 4 days in the Backwaters!
We sailed with Cinnamon, with a lovely attentive professional crew.
Each meal was a tasty banquet from breakfast to dinner.
We had waited 20 years for this trip and our houseboat experience with Spice Routes exceeded all expectations.

We stayed on Saffron, a one bedroom, two storey boat, for two glorious nights. It was a wonderful, relaxing, luxurious experience. We could not have been better looked after by the very attentive three-man crew. Our bedroom was large and comfortable and the bathroom was almost as big, complete with jacuzzi with a view. I would strongly recommend two nights for the best experience. The second day we cruised in quieter parts of the backwaters, often without another boat in sight. The sitting room downstairs is very comfortable but we spent most of our time sitting/laying on the little balcony upstairs, just enjoying the experience, bird-spotting (take binoculars) and reading. The food is wonderful but there is far too much of it.
We took advantage of a couple options to explore the narrower waterways in a small boat - this is where you really get to see life on the rivers - and, best of all, a bird-watching walk at dawn with a remarkable man called Thomas. He's a rice farmer with an encyclopedic knowledge of the backwaters. It really was an education and a joy to spend time with him.
I very much hope we can return to this special corner of the world.

As part of a group tour I spent a night on the Spice Route houseboat Tamarind, cruising the Kerala backwaters. It was delightful. The boat was very clean, air conditioned throughout, with a lovely room and small but perfect bathroom. We had a sunset canoe trip through some of the smaller canals, seeing birds and wildlife. The food was copious and very tasty. The whole environment of the backwaters was extremely calming after a hectic tour of south India. I would recommend S;pice Routes cruises most highly.

Spice Routes Luxury Cruises was recommended by our trusted agent (Iain Beattie of Wildspace Travel in Cape Town South Africa) as part of a 16-day itinerary in Kerala. We had a two-night cruise on the deluxe one-bedroom Saffron which had a living room, a large upstairs dining room with windows on three sides and a full bedroom suite with a large bathroom with a double Jacuzzi tub. The boat was in excellent condition and fully equipped. We had a crew of three who took care of everything. Over the course of our cruise we had a stop at a small village and a one hour ride each day on small motor boats that could take us into the small canals and into local villages. The package included all our meals, and they were very good and bountiful. The house boat cruise was very relaxing and took us to areas we would have not seen without a boat. This was truly an unique and enjoyable experience

I am so glad that we used Spice Routes to book our backwater cruise. The 3 bedroom houseboat, Cinnamon, was impeccably clean with modern furniture and fixtures. Hot water and clean, modern en-suite bathrooms. We were super impressed by the crew onboard who were friendly, efficient and very polite. They were very knowledgeable about the area, providing insight into the local life, history and wildlife. After docking in the evening, we went for a village walk and one of the crew accompanied us, ensuring our safety and translating conversations with the locals. The meals prepared (we opted for vegetarian cuisine) were delicious and all requests were catered for. The rooms were very spacious and there was air-conditioning throughout the boat. I had a chance to view a few other houseboats provided by other service providers and they were definitely not the same standard or luxury as that provided by Spice Routes. I would definitely recommend Spice Routes to anyone wanting to experience the backwaters in luxury.

We booked Spice Route cruise for an afternoon with lunch. I would recommend tourist to at least stay in a night or 2. It says luxury cruise and surely it was a luxury cruise. Beautiful Dining area and 3 bedrooms all with en suite. We had 3 crew members and all were welcoming and very good. Lunch was a traditional Kerala food served on a banana leaf. It was good food. Nice relaxing cruising on back waters and some amazing scenery to view. If you do a Kerala trip then Spice Route luxury Cruise is a must. A lovely experience.

Normally, I don't post reviews of places that I visit or hotels that I stay but I am compelled to write a review about my underwhelming house boat stay with Spice Routes. First and foremost, paying 50 k for a 1 night stay is a ludicrous amount of money unless you are really providing an experience that is unparallel. So, my benchmarking starts from there. The house boat that we were provided was a 3 bedroom houseboat called "Clove" . We were a party of 4 adults and a 3 year old child. Even though our tour planner, SOTC had booked a 2 bedroom house boat ,we got a 3 bedroom houseboat. Normally that would be a good thing , but the problem was that because of the 3 bedrooms (we weren't allowed to use the 3rd bedroom ) the size of the other bedrooms were miniscule !! While the staff was nice and tried to help, language was a big problem. We were told by SOTC that the boat will stop sometime late afternoon and we will tour a village, but it never happened. We were told by SOTC that a canoe ride will be arranged , but it never happened. They stopped at a fish market but didn't tell us that the idea behind the stop was for us to pick up a fish (u have to pay for it ) and they will cook it for you. I came to know about this from another passenger who had a similar awful experience during the check out the next day morning.
The boat requires serious upgrade and it clearly lacked the requisite maintenance. One of the bedroom a/c was blowing cold air and not cooling a barely 100 sq ft room. I had it at 17c the whole night along with the fan to keep the room moderately cool. The living room ac suddenly made a loud noise and stopped working for sometime . The staff switched it off, asked us to wait for some time and then it was working , albeit with a decently loud humming noise. The age on the furniture was clearly showing. Stain marks, broken edges on the end tables. Led strips not working. Bathroom light wasn't working . The boat had a pungent smell...I guess the list goes on and on.
For folks visiting from abroad, I wouldn't recommend Spice Routes at all!!

Amazing experience. Luxury on water, kids enjoyed it to the core.
Backwaters of kerala have a large and serene tranquility, which can be wonderfully explored in one of this giant houseboat. We had 5 greatly attended bedrooms,a drawing room and a well appointed dining room with on call service.
The chef and operator all were nice localities.
They were all serving us with a smile, food was good.
Overall it was a wonderful experience all together.
Must visit if you are travelling with your extended family and group of friends

We stayed overnight in one of the houseboats of Spice Routes. We needed two bedrooms but the houseboat we stayed in had three. The houseboat was spaceous and comfortable with both a/c and fans in all rooms. There were three crew members, a chef and two crew members who shared the responsibilities of serving and driving the boat. The food prepared by the chef were excellent. He prepared several dishes for every meal. The two other crew members were very helpful. One overnight stay seem too short. We would have wanted to stay another night. It’s a good place to relax and spend time with family.
