We rented a 5 bedroom luxury houseboat for a day trip (6 hours) through the backwaters. Our group had about 20 people. The boat was fabulous and was inclusive of a very good Kerala lunch and tea/snacks. The entire boat was air-conditioned with viewing decks on both floors. The bedrooms downstairs with en-suite bathrooms had large glass windows facing the waters. It was a wonderful experience for the whole group.
Though their price was somewhat higher than the competition, it was totally worth it in my opinion. Also, the entire booking process, done remotely from another country, was smooth. I highly recommend Spice Routes.

We spent one night in Saffron Houseboat. It is luxury at its best. It is 2 storey houseboat with the rooms, living area, dinning area of 5 star level. It is fully air conditioned running through out. There is a small seat out area in the upper deck giving spectacular views.
The icing in the cake was the Jacuzzi in the bathroom.....The food prepared by the chef Nidhin was awesome. He pampered us with food all through.
Vembanad Lake with dotting line of coconut trees is simply beautiful and the tranquility transport one to a different world all together.

Spice Routes Luxury Cruises was recommended by our trusted agent (Iain Beattie of Wildspace Travel in Cape Town South Africa) as part of a 16-day itinerary in Kerala. We had a two-night cruise on the deluxe one-bedroom Saffron which had a living room, a large upstairs dining room with windows on three sides and a full bedroom suite with a large bathroom with a double Jacuzzi tub. The boat was in excellent condition and fully equipped. We had a crew of three who took care of everything. Over the course of our cruise we had a stop at a small village and a one hour ride each day on small motor boats that could take us into the small canals and into local villages. The package included all our meals, and they were very good and bountiful. The house boat cruise was very relaxing and took us to areas we would have not seen without a boat. This was truly an unique and enjoyable experience

Normally, I don't post reviews of places that I visit or hotels that I stay but I am compelled to write a review about my underwhelming house boat stay with Spice Routes. First and foremost, paying 50 k for a 1 night stay is a ludicrous amount of money unless you are really providing an experience that is unparallel. So, my benchmarking starts from there. The house boat that we were provided was a 3 bedroom houseboat called "Clove" . We were a party of 4 adults and a 3 year old child. Even though our tour planner, SOTC had booked a 2 bedroom house boat ,we got a 3 bedroom houseboat. Normally that would be a good thing , but the problem was that because of the 3 bedrooms (we weren't allowed to use the 3rd bedroom ) the size of the other bedrooms were miniscule !! While the staff was nice and tried to help, language was a big problem. We were told by SOTC that the boat will stop sometime late afternoon and we will tour a village, but it never happened. We were told by SOTC that a canoe ride will be arranged , but it never happened. They stopped at a fish market but didn't tell us that the idea behind the stop was for us to pick up a fish (u have to pay for it ) and they will cook it for you. I came to know about this from another passenger who had a similar awful experience during the check out the next day morning.

The boat requires serious upgrade and it clearly lacked the requisite maintenance. One of the bedroom a/c was blowing cold air and not cooling a barely 100 sq ft room. I had it at 17c the whole night along with the fan to keep the room moderately cool. The living room ac suddenly made a loud noise and stopped working for sometime . The staff switched it off, asked us to wait for some time and then it was working , albeit with a decently loud humming noise. The age on the furniture was clearly showing. Stain marks, broken edges on the end tables. Led strips not working. Bathroom light wasn't working . The boat had a pungent smell...I guess the list goes on and on.

For folks visiting from abroad, I wouldn't recommend Spice Routes at all!!

Our overnight cruise on the Keralan backwaters was the highlight of our four weeks touring Southern India. This boat was expensive but worth it.
Check in was efficient but although we had emailed in advance about the availability of alcohol it wasn't explained that only red wine and beer was available to buy before we boarded and that we had to pay cash. Luckily we had sufficient with us.
The boat itself was very clean and the three staff with us brilliant. The chef was careful to ask what we liked and came up with a feast of vegetarian dishes for us.
The bedroom and shower were just like being in a hotel, the air con was great.
If I had any criticisms it would be that the pillows were hard, there were no paper napkins for meals and it would have been good to have a pair of binoculars on board to watch the birds as we sailed down the river - hence (along with no cold white wine)-four stars not five. Sort of expected considering the cost involved.

We booked a luxurious houseboat, in advance, belonging to the Spice Routes company. It extended the experience of the backwater sail with five-star hospitality. Upon boarding, we were greeted with fresh coconut water.

We were then given a tour of the houseboat and given a few minutes to freshen up.
We were served our lunch. We were pleasantly delighted with the meal and shocked at how much food they gave us!

The dishes were centred around Kerala cuisine, with seafood and curry options and the star being Karimeen Fry Kerala Style!

Once lunch wrapped up, we began the Alappuzha Houseboat Cruise, floating along the canals and lakes. During the initial hours, we stopped to get fresh seafood from a local fisherman that the cook would rustle up for us for dinner; they turned out to be delectable!

Alcohol was unavailable onboard the Alappuzha Houseboat Cruise; so, if you want, you must bring your drink with you.

On the Houseboat Cruise, we spent our time sitting, gazing out at the natives’ lives, children playing, ladies washing clothes etc. We saw decorated churches, banana trees, rice paddy fields, and plenteous palms.

We also saw the finishing point for the Nehru Trophy Boat Race. The captain gave us a chance to steer the houseboat for a few minutes, guiding us on the right techniques.

You will be relaxing and just clicking photographs. So, wear casual clothes.

Till dusk, we cruised through the Alappuzha backwaters. As the Sun set, we saw a charming blue and pink sky. At night, the houseboat was anchored along the banks. Carry mosquito spray as once darkness falls, mosquitos will swarm.

I am so glad that we used Spice Routes to book our backwater cruise. The 3 bedroom houseboat, Cinnamon, was impeccably clean with modern furniture and fixtures. Hot water and clean, modern en-suite bathrooms. We were super impressed by the crew onboard who were friendly, efficient and very polite. They were very knowledgeable about the area, providing insight into the local life, history and wildlife. After docking in the evening, we went for a village walk and one of the crew accompanied us, ensuring our safety and translating conversations with the locals. The meals prepared (we opted for vegetarian cuisine) were delicious and all requests were catered for. The rooms were very spacious and there was air-conditioning throughout the boat. I had a chance to view a few other houseboats provided by other service providers and they were definitely not the same standard or luxury as that provided by Spice Routes. I would definitely recommend Spice Routes to anyone wanting to experience the backwaters in luxury.

Excellent night at Cruise with Spice Routes. The houseboat has two bedrooms and a spacious living/dining space that we comfortably occupied.
Great food and service.
On the first day, in the evening we went out onshore for a nice walk.
I spent quite a bit of time in photographing birds in flight as well. Stunning landscape in the backwaters of Kerala.

As part of a group tour I spent a night on the Spice Route houseboat Tamarind, cruising the Kerala backwaters. It was delightful. The boat was very clean, air conditioned throughout, with a lovely room and small but perfect bathroom. We had a sunset canoe trip through some of the smaller canals, seeing birds and wildlife. The food was copious and very tasty. The whole environment of the backwaters was extremely calming after a hectic tour of south India. I would recommend S;pice Routes cruises most highly.

Overnight stay on Pepper Boat, 2 bedrooms with ensuites and additional facilities on the upper level.
From arriving at the pickup location and being greeted by the Manager for check in, we were also greeted by the owner who talked us through the history of the house and his familys' photographs which hang on the walls.
We boarded the boat and met our staff for the trip who showed us to our accommodation.
Everything from thereon can only be described as superb. Bedrooms were spotless and beautifully appointed,  the lounge area, the dining area and outside viewing platform on the upper deck were very comfortable.
Lunch was provided, then an afternoon of cruising in the wonderful backwaters then dinner in the evening. Food was all freshly cooked and our request that some food be provided non-spicy was more than met.
Staff were attentive and very helpful.
We cannot recommend this company highly enough,  we were sorry to leave having only booked a single evening.
Many many thanks to Spice Routes for making this trip so memorable.
