Chilapata jungle safari is lesser known but great experience for wild life lovers. It is mostly a dense forest in compare to Jaldapara grassy forest. We entered the jungle from Kodalbasti beat under Chilapata range. There are 5 gypsy cars for safary, each full car booking cost you Rs 1600. You may book the safary over the phone which will cost you additional Rs 200-300. There are two timing for the safary, one from 5:00 am and another from 3:00 pm. In our afternoon we able to see rhino, peacock. Barking deer, pack of bisons in our tour. Elephants are also seen here. The forest is full of big and dense trees and torsa river flowing by her side dividing jaldapara forest. At the end we were treated with Rabha folk dance ceremony by locals. It was worth having the tour no doubt.

We availed the same car of OMNI which took around Rs.900 for Holong to Malangi and a roundtrip of Kodalbasti range which was 8km up-down from Malangi. Booked a zipsy for 2.30-5.30 safari for Rs. 1720.
Had a lunch in Malangi dorm1 (don’t go for this room , this is not the Borodabri lodge you’ll see in pictures. Try to book any room but dorm). Our manager Dipak da (9775478187) was too good a person. Prepared food for us for the next 2 days. Veg-60,egg-75,fish-120,chicken-140 mills. While rooms are not so good , but food in the dorms are better and cost effective than main lodge. Around 1.10pm we started walking (auto fare is Rs.300 , buses are hardly available) for Kodalbasti range , walked 4kms beside of the Hasimara air base camp and forest and started for safari @2.30 .
on safari we came to see a Rhino , elephant with her cub , plenty of peacocks/hens , a Daatal (male elephant )
and around 4-5 bisons in few different places. Hoped we’ll get to see a leopard again but it doesn’t happen now and then. Returned Malangi @ 7pm as a kind zypsy driver gave us a lift for Rs.100 only.

It's an elephant corridor between Jaldapara National park and Buxa Tiger reserve, near Alipurduar and Hasimara of North Bengal. The name probably derived from Cooch army commander Chila Ray, who took shelter here. Earlier it was the hunting ground of Cooch Kings. In the ancient past it was the North Eastern frontier outpost of the Gupta empire. Better known as Nal Rajar Garh, it has a ruined fort of the Nal Kings, which is now a major attraction for tourists besides wildlife. Near the fort gate there are few incredible trees called Ramguna, on cut it drains blood like red colour juice. Elephants, leopards, bisons are very common here, driving through the forest is really amazing.

The Dooars are an extraordinary choice for the nature lovers and general visitors.Nestled in the heart of the picturesque Eastern Dooars at the foothills of the Eastern Himalaya and perched between Buxa Tiger Reserve and Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary, lies Chilapata Wildlife Sanctuary, the most important migration corridor of large herbivores such as One Horned Rhinos and Asiatic Elephants .
Chilapata reportedly harbours 23 species of carnivores and herbivores, approximately 180 species of birds, 22 species of reptiles, several species of amphibians and a host of lesser fauna.
The Chilapata tourism circuit includes guided safaris to the Mendabari watch tower and KodalBasti forests. Day visits to Buxa Tiger Reserve, Jaldapara Wild Life Sanctuary and Khayerbari Leopard Rescue Centre are also possible.

Chilapata is a dense forest but it is not as vast as Jaldapara WLS. The chance of Wildlife sighting is obviously lesser than Jaldapara. But if you visit it during winter, the beauty of the forest will definately please you.

Long trees and dense forest. That's what chilapata is all about. When you visit a sea, you don't hope to see a whale or shark, you just visit the sea. Same goes with Chilapata. If you visit it with a hope of seeing wild animals, then it might be disappointing. But if you are there to experience "the jungle", then you will be satisfied.

No, they have specific time slot for week days, and one day (in every week) is closed. check latest update on their web site. before you plan. (Extra recommendation) You stay should be near by (within 5 km). you have good resorts / guest houses within 6 km, ahead of the entrance gate...
