It’s been a while since we’ve been skiing, but this place didn’t disappoint. The manufactured snow wasn’t too bad & this time of year it wasn’t very crowded. The rental equipment was in good condition.
There is a limited amount of English spoken, but we were able to get by with a few English speaking employees & the trusty translate app.
My 12 year old son had a 2 hour lesson with an English instructor that was great!!
There seem to be a lot more intermediate & advanced runs here, but there’s one long green that was nice.

Had our first ski experience in China. Surprisingly positive. First and most importantly; having been exposed to Chinese 'ways' for so many years we were very surprised that everything worked smoothly in Wanlong and (queuing)-behavior was exemplary.
The ski resort is small. Fine for beginners/kids, less so for the more experienced (I read that Wanda ski resort near the Korean border is very good).
We've often skied in Korea. The Wanlong resort seems to have been modeled after e.g. High One and Yongpyong in Korea. Rental is organized well, equipment is close to new, lifts are excellent. FYI; Wanlong will be one of the venues the 2022 Winter Olympics will be held.
You can see this already; hotels & other facilities are being build at breakneck speed.
We wanted to combine ski with 3 days culture/Beijing. Transport is a pain!. The cheapest way would be to fly direct to Zhangjiakou from one of the main Chinese airports, and take a 65km taxi to Wanlong (about RMB 250). Getting to Beijing is possible by train but takes a long time. We took a taxi straight from Wanlong to Beijing Tianmen area at RMB 1500 stopping on the way at the Great Wall.
Another option could be to rent a car at Beijing airport. At RMB 10 you can have your driving license validated for China (short medical exam/etc), but such temp license isn't valid outside Beijing meaning you'd have to register at Zhangjiakou police station as well. When will China become more accessible, allowing self-drive?
Concerning hotels; you could get a cheap deal around RMB 500 for a fam room in Chongli, 11km from the ski piste. But it's a totally new and very uninspiring town with absolutely nothing to do. Taxi is cheap, to be called in by the concierge.
We stayed at the Shuanglong hotel rating it 9 out of 10. See my other review for that.
In short; if you have a short weekend and need to choose between Japan/Korea/China, we highly recommend checking out this place. It's absolutely underrated!

Family ski trip over a weekend by low-intermediate skiers. First of all, I should say that we have only ever skied in China so I can't compare to a major Western resort. Previous trips have been to Nanshan which frankly looks a bit pathetic in comparison! Wanlong is a huge resort with some small slopes for beginners, a couple of long green/red runs and a number of advanced runs for more capable skiers and snowboarders. These are proper ski runs of a couple of kilometers or more. Beautiful scenery, a decent place to eat at the top of the mountain, patrolled by what at least looked like professional medical staff. Fairly smooth process paying and picking up equipment, which was decent quality. We went the weekend after Spring Festival, practically nobody was on the bigger slopes so no crowds to contend with. On the minus side, staff we dealt with did not speak English and much of signage was not in English. Take your time working out which runs are appropriate for your ability, I didn't and ended up taking a 60 meter fall down a blue run by mistake - probably my fault and maybe not an issue with those more familiar with proper ski resorts (or better skiers)! Don't forget any of your kit because the shops in the main building are pretty expensive. A few international hotels in the area but not much else in the way of restaurants and night life. This is by my standards a great resort, beautiful, well run and a welcome break from the smog and traffic of Beijing.

This is a high end ski area just less than three hours drive from Beijing. Compared to close in places like NanShan, WanLong has very long runs and better groomed snow. There is one high speed quad lift to the top and a number of normal speed doubles. A number of mogul runs.
There is a neat lodge at the very top of the mountain with good coffee and noodle soups etc. This lodge also has 3 hair dryers mounted in the entrance area so you can dry and heat your gloves. ( I said high end!). Although western style toilets were in the minority, all of them I used (is this indelicate?) had heaters built into the seat. Nice.

China is the home of terrible customer service. Starbucks employees that don't smile or even know how to make a coffee, tiny 25 meter drop ski hills with brown snow that per hour cost more than Vail or Klosters. Substandard fake products and contaminated food are a regular. Don't attack me, it's the truth, nearly 15 years here, although there are many things I like about China, high expectations to do with anything customer service or entertainment related on a western level for price or service are not on the list.
OK compared with a western resort it's a bit mediocre, poorly serviced aging rental equipment, busy on the easy slopes at weekends, very cold in January or February -15 to -25 is normal be warned. But there is a true 400 meter vertical drop high speed 6 man chair. So basically that's a par for the course chair lift and vert drop in Europe or America. So most of the snow is man-made and icy hardpack, but that's the same story in Korea and most of Northern China, being it's so cold and dry.
The thing is for the cost, in China that's INCREDIBLE! So read in China 5 stars, world standard, 3 star.

The skiing is adequate - sure this isn't the alps, but the artificial snow conditions are good throughout the day and the slopes & queues are quite empty. The food and surrounding service were good.
The main issue is the lack of English info, especially prior to visit. We were in touch with one of the employees discussing this matter, and he had the strong intention to improve the international accessibility. This is a hidden gem!

I've been to Wanlong and Thaiwoo in the Chongli ski area, about 3.5 hours west of Beijing, and Wanlong is definitely better for skiing/snowboarding. But facilities are terrible, with few hotel options. The ones that do exist are not good. Very Chinese-style, not welcoming to Westerners. Lots of smoking indoors, no food options.
The pistes though, are nicely groomed and once you get beyond the bottom two runs there is nobody on the mountain! All snow is man-made because, you know, it's a desert out there (2022 Winter Olympics where it doesn't snow... great). But the lifts run well and are fast, snow is made frequently, and overall the skiing was enjoyable.

Though it was not easy to get to wanlong ski from Beijing, we felt it was worth it. Many options even for beginners and intermediate skiers. Staff was friendly and helpful so it was a breeze for the 5 days we were there.
We took a train from Beijing to Zhangjiakou (around 3h) and a taxi from Zhangjiakou (around1h that cost RMB 230) to wanlong. (They are in the process of building a speed train and should be ready be 2019 which will cut traveling time from beijing to wanlong to around 50 min).
We stayed in Shuanglong hotel, next to ski resort. But there are so many other options in the town (xian cheng) as they are getting ready for 2020 Olympics. Should be cheaper to stay and rent your ski equipment from there. And there a public bus that runs a few times from the town to the ski resort.
A great and worthwhile trip!

Visited this ski resort for 3 different weekends over the last couple of years. Slopes are of a decent standard and the chair lifts are also good. Lift passes can be annoying at times as they don't scan properly. Food is good and prices are very reasonable would love to visit here again some day.

I arrived in Chong li in 2019.2 with my friend. It is absolutely freezing but it is a great place to go skiing near Beijing. It is snow quality and service is brilliant. On the first day,we went to ski and it was so exciting! In the afternoon,we taste some very special food and it was delicious and all of their food was super fresh. On the second day,we went to hot spring,it is very comfortable and I spend 2 hours on it!Although their food was very delicious,it was a bit expensive so I'd advice you that if you didn't want to make a high price, you should take some fast food when you start your trip.
Tip:The night of chongli is really cold so I would say don't forget to take a coat!

Do we need to spend a night at the resort?
Is a day trip possible?
Written 5 November 2019
Hi iristaletta, can you advise on how Wanlong compares for skiing with Nanshan, which is nearer Beijing? It is possible to travel to Wanlong by public transport from Beijing? Can you offer any recommendations on where to stay on an evening? Is it possible to organise a trip from Beijing to Wanlong independently as an English-only speaker? I'm an experienced skier and I have some days to spare on the back of a business trip so would love to ski near Beijing - I'm just a bit daunted by the logistics! Thanks, B

have already been to wanlong ski resort 2 times. in january 2013 and february 2014. overall the slope is ok but suit the intermediate level more. the run is not long enough.
the transport from chongli town to the resort is poor. certainly need to improve on this. there is no shuttle bus from the chongli town to the skii resort which is about 15km away. it ok that we pay for the shuttle bus but your resort or the town don't provide this service.
so everyday you want to ski you got to book a taxi. that not good.
the transport service is totally different from hakuba in japan. in the hakuba valley area there are about 8 areas you can ski and are link by free shuttle bus.

Hi,
I would like to know more about the ski area, and whether if mid-Oct to end-Oct will be suitable to visit. When does the actual snow kick in? Or is it man-made snow?
Thank you very much!

Hi, is there a snow sledding run at Wanlong?
Written 26 February 2015
No, there is no real snow sledding run, but some families used the green beginner slope for snow sledding with their kids
