Over the past 40 years, the Charente-Maritime local council has contributed to improved public awareness of the exceptional natural heritage of the area. 2000 hectares of land were acquired and landmarked as Sensitive Natural Areas, protected, enhanced and open to visitors. As part of these territories, a network of Nature Centres offers optimum conditions for our visitors to improve their awareness of nature and the environment. Between the edge of the forst and the village of Dampierre-sur-Boutonne, the 'Asinerie du Baudet du Poitou' (Poitou Donkey Nature Centre) is a typical farm of the Saintonge area, featuring Poitou donkeys, draught horses and mules. The Asinerie is an authentic conservation centre of the Poitou donkey and mule breeds. Discover their story from a fun and pedagogical viewpoint. Many activites for all ages are possible : guided or non guided tours, and by reservation : carriage rides, hikes with the donkeys, and much more!

This is not a donkey sanctuary! This farm looks after a rare and very interesting donkey breed. They also have heavy horses and muels. The tour is good with physical interaction with the young donkeys. Very enjoyable!
