Fabulous trip from Mai Chau. Beautiful valley among high mountains with terraced paddy fields. Locals harvesting rice by hand - extremely hard work, even in November hot too.
I would stay here I preference to Mai Chau as tourism is rushing in, and perhaps sadly there is now a road into the main village, Don.

Had a wonderful and memorable time in Pu Luong Nature Reserve.

One can go trekking seemingly forever or to your heart's desire.

Having a good guide is paramount to have an enjoyable experience tailored to suit your needs.

Saw rice terraces in full bloom at the end of September.

Pu Luong ended up being my favourite spot out of Cat Ba, Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh. It is incredibly authentic and rural and what an utter privilege it was to be invited to explore this obscenely beautiful part of the world.

The people were unbelievably warm, inviting me into their homes as I passed by for a hot drink, inviting me to play delightful street games with their children. Their stunning stilt houses, made of bamboo and palm, were breathtaking, and the vistas of rice terraces were utterly beautiful and golden at the May harvest time.

And the thunderstorms I witnessed in the evenings were some of the most spectacular displays of nature I have ever seen.

Overlook Pu Luong at your own loss - this place is magical.

I have heard from a local, the pool was a man-made pool people build in the middle of the jungle to attract tourists. Why do you need a pool in the middle of a natural reverse? I hope they only set up tent and protect the environment before everything got destroyed by human.

A bit long from mai chau by moto, around 90minutes but you go through villages and amazing scenery. Very local offers for restaurants and hotels but you can see some development coming up.

When I see Trip Advisor reviews of places like this rating them "average," I wonder why the reviewer even leaves home. This was the most magical place I've yet visited in my nearly two years in Vietnam. The mountains juxtaposed with the terraced rice paddies make Pu Luong the picture postcard of what one would imagine rural Vietnam to be. If you don't speak Vietnamese, you'll want to either hire a local guide or you can simply use google maps to find places to explore. My Vietnamese is decent enough that we didn't bother to get a guide but ended up quasi-joining another group (at their invitation) for an hour or so of our trekking.

The high season here is May/June when the rice paddies turn yellow and the harvest takes place. So, expect prices to be highest then. But even now, (February) when the fields are green and the planting is taking place, the area is absolutely breathtaking.

I hate to say this but while the physical distance between Mai Chau and Pu Luong is not great, the roads require slower driving. I would recommend staying over in the vicinity of Pu Luong rather than commute from Mai Chau - or do them in sequence. But, there is a wide variety of lodging options in the area from quite nice to simple homestays. But, no matter what you do, if you approach the adventure with an open mind and a generous spirit, you'll absolutely love it here. I rarely want to return to a place I've been because there's just so much to see. But I have to return to Pu Luong.

We stayed at Mai Chau Ecolodge for two nights and took a day trip to Pu Luong. In hindsight we wished that we had stayed in Pu Luong instead because we thought the reserve was much more scenic, peaceful and less touristy than Mai Chai. Pu Luong is off the main tourist track right now. If you are debating between visiting Mai Chau or Pu Luong, we would recommend the latter over the former. It is a very lovely area!

Situated in the middle of a natural forest on a mountain, Pu Luong nature reserve has excellent spacious comfortable chalets and all have balconies with great views. The food is good: the Papaya salad great, the beef a little tough. Staff are friendly and willing but some don’t speak English well. Scenic walks and cycle rides are easily accessible.

I went on a 3 day motorcycle tour with my husband and 13 yr old son to Pu Luong from Ning Binh late November 2019. We loved the park and the tour. We stayed in 2 different homestays in ethnic Thai villages, the first of which was completely magical with water gently flowing through the rice fields lulling us to sleep. We hiked through the village landscape and saw the network of bamboo waterwheels and stopped for tea and grapefruit snacks. Our second day we hiked and swam in a lovely waterfall, and walked through a village of weavers. We were there after the rice harvest, so a bit cool and I imagine the green of new rice would make this terraced landscape even more exquisite. Our tour guide was Toan Duong at toantourguide at hotmail.com, and we highly recommend him. While I loved being on the back of a motorcycle, it is a 3 hour ride from Ninh Binh out to Pu Luong, so consider this when you choose a car or motorbike to take you. Toan was fun, gracious and knowledgeable. He was willing to change our itinerary on the last day because we decided we wanted to see the Trang An grottoes, which we also recommend - amazing!
