St. Mary's island is a must see for its unique rock formations that cannot be found anywhere else in India and for brilliant sea views. The azure sea can be mistaken for the famed beaches of Maldives! A variety of seashells lie strewn all around the beach. The first boat leaves from the ferry terminal at 10.30am and returns an hour later to pick up visitors already on the island while dropping off a fresh batch of visitors. It does not take more than an hour to see the place. Swimming is not permitted and rightfully so as the sea is deep, rough and rocky. Food items and single-use plastic water bottles are not permitted on the island. Bags are checked and if these items are found, they have to be deposited at the storage facility at the island entrance gate. There is a eatery of sorts with a few basic snacks available. Water sports facilities are supposedly available, but I only saw the zorbing contraption. Toilet facility is available on the island. There is a long list of dos and donts that includes 'not to collect shells from the island'.
One has to wade through water when getting off the boat, so dress appropriately unless you do not mind the sea water in your clothes.
I suggest taking the first boat out and returning an hour later if you wish to avoid the peak noon sun.
Ample car park, showers and rest rooms are available at the ferry terminal. There is a beautiful sea walk near the ferry ticket counter that simply allows you to soak in the blueness of the sea in the light sea breeze.
Take the ferry from the boating service near the sea walk rather than from Malpe beach as the rates are cheaper here. To get there, on Malpe Harbour Road, make a left at the T-junction and enter the gate to the car park. An autorickshaw stand is also present here.

Fantastic place and beautiful sea. We were family of 7 and to travel there, you will need to take small ferry from Udupi which takes about 20 mins. The boat cost is around 300 rupees and will only start when there are min 30 people. The duration of the stay in island will be 1 hour once you reach the island. The island itself is very beautiful and full of shells. please do not walk without slipper or shoes else you will get hurt. It is very difficult to swim as the water has full of sharp rocks.

An awesome evening spent here. There’s a boat ride to this island which costs Rs. 250/ per person. The boat has to be taken from Malpe Beach and the distance is about 4.5 km on open sea. The place can be visited from Malpe Beach at 9 AM and the last boat leaves at 4:30 PM. The last boat leaves St. Mary’s island at 5:45 PM.
The boat ride and then the serene view is worth the money spent. One should plan to have at least 2 to 3 hours to cover this place nicely. There’s limited options in terms of food so advance preparation is recommended.

Had been there in Oct 2021, one must reach Malpe Harbor point from Udupi and pay 300 INR per person,. They will take you in their boat to their island, upon reaching the island, better to go with sandals or chappals as you need to get down in the water and walk to the entrance. They have enforced strict plastic ban where you cannot take the plastic bottles and need to keep in the locker before the entrance (Tupperware allowed). The place has been cleaned, the boat guy gives an hour to visit the place and swimming is banned now, just go visit the place, take some photos and comeback, retain the slip with you which the boat guy gives you. There's a small refreshment shop for juices and small knick knacks.

St Mary's Island is a 15min boat ride from Malpe Beach. There are 2 options...one is the local ferry from the jetty which runs only if there are a minimum of 30 people & boats from the beach which runs if there are a min of 15 people. The island is unspoilt & beautiful to walk around. They give you 1 hr to roam around & then the boat leaves. During peak season there will more boats at regular intervals. The rock formations on the island are unique & you get a beautiful view of the Malpe shoreline. More amenities can be provided by the govt. to make it tourist friendly. A must visit if in Udupi district.

The island is formed uniquely with pillared shaped & is well maintained. The beach water is crystal clear. One can experience the richness of it but security won't allow to take a bath.
The boat will take you some Malpe beach & give you 1 hour to roam the island which is a bit less time.
There will be water rides available but it's a bit costly.

This is really like the maldives. Hope there would be a better souvenir or snack shop and make it kind of time bound for visitors. An online platform for buying tickets could get this far more organized and make the trip far more memorable. All in all the chaos was the boats ferrying passengers to and fro and the lines

Not recommended at all. Entry fee is 300. It's a small island with the same beach you see in Udupi. They will not let you carry plastic bottles inside but they sell it inside at higher price. Swimming is not allowed and you can even go inside water. Do not waste your 4 hours here.

Please dont visit, Worst experience , You can visit Manasa Amusement park in mangalore rather than paying here. No proper washroom, waste of 300 rupee, just looting money no entertainment, Foods not allowed. People coming from outside dont get trap. There are boards across stating outside food and water not allowed on the island and to our suprise, water was not available on the island either !! The washrooms were not cleaned and you can’t even take a leak. No facility available and once the ferry drops you, you’re stranded for an hour and then entire island can be covered under 20 mins.

Hello
I'm traveling to Udup with my family for two days. I
have the second half free on both the days. Can anyone pls tell me, which are the beaches and the places I can visit with my little one? How safe it is to travel alone in Udupi. I'm staying at Country Inn & Suites and have a train to return back home from Udupi Railway Station. Thanks a lot.
