Visit Maenam Hill if you want to experience the beautiful forest, night sky full of stars, a beautiful sunrise and one of the best views of Kanchenjunga range. There is also an old monastery. Our tour guide was Outdoorindeed and they made our experience even better. They were just wonderful. I visited the place with my friends and every step was worth it. It is also beginner's friendly.

Trek the Maenam hill which has an altitude of 10,500 feet. Starting from 10.30 am and coming down by 6 pm in the evening will do. A monastery is there at the peak of Maenam.

Trek the Maenam hill which has an altitude of 10,500 feet. The trek starts from Ravangla (7000ft). So if anyone is up for viewing the sunrise they should start from the preceeding night. Otherwise, a day is enough; starting from 4 am and coming down by 5 pm in the evening will do. A monastery is there at the peak of Maenam. The trek is tiring but if you are determined enough you will enjoy it. Carry some chocolates, fruit juice and lots of water lest you run out of calories.

My lovely wife and I walked to the top of Maenem hill when in Ravangla. It's a pleasant but unspectacular walk through the forest to a 3000 meters plus summit. The views would be great on a clear day but unfortunately it was misty when we were there. It took us around 5 hours to do the roundtrip so it's an easy day hike. Some people, however, prefer to camp at the top in the hope of catching a glorious sunrise.

You need to get a permit at the little hut just beyond the park gate. The guys there will try to convince you to get a guide. They'll tell you that it is hard to find the way. That people get lost. That in fact some people got lost just yesterday and they were looking for them until midnight. Then, conversely, that if you get lost nobody will come and look for you. This is all nonsense as it is really easy to find your way. There is a very clear path that zigzags up the hill, with the occasional short cut here & there cutting a corner. The only place you could really go wrong is towards the top where the path splits, with one trail continuing straight on around the hill and another going left & up. You want the latter option. If you get to a sign saying you shouldn't light any fires near four vertical concrete posts then you need to double back and look for the uphill track. By all means take a guide if you aren't confident but if you have any hillwalking experience you will be just fine on your own.

Maenam Sanctuary is THE place to go to for all trekkers and adventure seekers. 5-6 hours going up; 3 hours coming down. Spend the night on top. Guides & helpers available. We stayed just opposite the Entrance at The Lindsay Everland. Great experience. Best time to go is Winters, starting Oct-Nov.

Vert beautiful trail all the way up the hill to the peak. Quite hectic as it is 20 km from start to finish. Costs Rs 70 per person. The forest are all covered in moss, which shows how much moisture is there, but makes it look like a lord of the rings forest. Went in May, so no snow. Could get breezy and cold at the top. Highly recommended but start early and plan for this to be a whole day thing.

Maenam hill offers a good one day trek with an option of overnight camping on the summit top. We however visited with another motive - that is birding. Among those sighted were - Mrs. Gould's sunbird, Green tailed sunbird, yellow cheeked tit, striated laughingthrush, yellow billed blue magpie, red billed leiothrix, etc.

We visited Ravangla on 26-29 January, 2017. We also went for a trek to Maenam Hill top on 27th-28th.

The trek route is of 12 kms approx and takes around 5 hours. The trek starts at an altitude of 7000 feet (2133 mtrs) from Ravangla and goes up to 10,500 feet (3200 mtrs). The trail goes through Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary.

Although the trek can be done in a single day if started early morning but we preferred to spend a night at hill top and prepared ourselves accordingly.

We contacted DIKEN RAI (+917584813732) as guide and he arranged everything for us - from tent to sleeping bags, foods to beverages. We were a group of seven people and Diken charged us 1000/- INR per head.

We started at 10 AM and reached the top at around 3 PM. As soon as we reached, it started snow and the snowfall continued till next morning. We had no option but to bunk the idea of campfire, gossiped all the eve inside tent. Meanwhile Diken along with his friend, made Wai-Wai for our dinner and served it hot.

Mesmerizing view it was when we came out of the camp that morning! The snow was almost 6 inches thick! We went to Bhaleydunga first, a huge rock hanging from the cliff providing you 360 degree view (also the highest point of trek) and then started our journey downhill to Ravangla.

We will surely go back soon!
