Step back in time out of the busy Lijiang old town in this little village called Yu Hu where all the houses are built with stones in a distinct style.
Every family has a horse and they make a living from agriculture as well as taking the tourists for a horseback ride.
This is the only village we saw with this style so we think it is worth the trip. It is a Naxi minority village just like others we visited but we could not figure out why the houses were different...
Joseph F. Rock, an American botanist who wrote many articles for the National Geographic magazine lived there. His articles inspired the novel Lost Horizon, by James Hilton, which revealed the charms of Shangri-La.
Tip : The Naxi people don't like to be photographed, so you need to be very discrete.

What makes a picturesque village? This ancient village has all the potential, located at the foothills of Yulong Snow Mountain with narrow endless stone alleys. All the houses were made by Naxi people using unique stones with “Bird Wing Roofs”. Yuhe Lake is beside the village. We went to the Former Residence of Luo Ke and had the opportunity to enjoy the fresh air and this beautiful serene beauty. There are donkey rides and souvenir shops. One thing is the tour guide told us don’t buy anything from the villages, we all listened.

It took four people at my hotel and one on the phone to convey "Yuhu/Xuesong" to my Naxi taxi driver but the village does still have Naxi living in it, traditional architecture, and the historic home where Joseph Rock lived for many years. Definitely worth visiting, very close to the Yuzhuqingtian (Jade Pillar Supporting the Sky), another taxi/bus challenge to reach but also worth the effort. Yuhu, #14 bus, 2¥, or 300¥ all day round trip taxi from Lijiang including Yugengsi, Baisha, Yu zhu qing tian, Yufensi, and Fuguo Temple.

Yuhu is a small, peaceful village at the foothill of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Yulong) 15 km north of Lijiang.
It's inhabited by Naxi people, a minority ethnic group mostly living in Lijiang. They are generally low profile and friendly, earning their living from farming and taking tourists for horseback riding to explore the village and even hike the snowy mountain.
What makes this village unique is the rows of traditional houses of which the walls are made from processed stones & muds called monkey heads with roofs resembling bird wings.
This place is worth visiting for a few hours or longer. Better if you have a local guide or somebody from the village to show you around. We didn't and were not up to horseback riding either so we just took a stroll down the cozy streets. No one hassled us except an elderly lady in the car park selling traditional flower crown that we bought.
To come here, we asked our hotel in Lijiang Old Town to arrange a day car rental + driver who could speak English. Didn't remember how much but it wasn't expensive. We covered Jade Dragon Snow mountain, Yuhu and Baisha village. The lady driver help us buying tickets but didn't accompany us, except in Baisha as it wasn't easy to get back to the parking lot.
Of the 3 attractions, we liked Yuhu the most (July 2 years back).

A very quiet village, where the locals live in distinctive stone houses. They offer horseback tours to tourists, but the highlight for us was to visit the former home of Joseph Rock. He lived and worked in the area in the early 20th century

Hidden in a sidestreet of Yuhu, postsigned, you will discover a pearl. The former house of Austrian born explorer, Dr. Joseph Francis Rock.
