- ATF A22 contributionsFantastic TourOur Tour was Ke’Kchi chocolate and culture with a lunch stop at the Spice Farm and Botanical Gardens. It was excellent! Our tour guide Chico did a remarkable job of explaining everything that we were going to do and see on our tour. He even participated in a traditional dance and entertained us the entire time. It was never a dull moment and much appreciated.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 5 February 2024
- rt1866Grand Rapids, Michigan6 contributionsWonderful Day, LOVED it!!!We LOVED this excursion. It was from a Norwegian Cruise. Very well organized, we even enjoyed the bus and boat rides to get there. It was a beautiful day, so many flowers and so much green!! The guides were very informative, with the guide on the bus telling us all about Belize, and allowing plenty of time for pictures at the farm. We also tasted locally grown fruit (malay apples?) and saw the national flower (black orchid). After the tractor/wagon tour we went in to their beautiful handcrafted shop where we were able to purchase spices grown on the farm, enjoyed local beverages and had a chance to speak to the craftsman who tend the orchards and create the structures. We saw vanilla beans, cacao, cinnamon, pepper, cardamom, and many local fruits (malay apples, bananas, coconut, citrus). This outing was a refreshing break from pools and sand. We were able to see a little of the country outside the cruise line property, and meet some of the locals. This outing is suitable for all ages. There are some stairs to get on the bus and boat, and being that it's Mexico there didn't really seem to be any ramps for wheelchairs. 5 out of 5 stars as the whole day was a feast for the eyes!!!Visited January 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 6 February 2024
- Jo W2 contributionsWonderful spot - beautiful feast for the sensesThis was a wonderful shore excursion and trip. Truly beautiful gardens and our guide did a lovely job explaining the various plants. As an avid cook it was fun to see vanilla, ginger, cinnamon and other spices in their natural habitat. Curry leaves were a revelation - so much more fragrant than what I can get locally. Save time to shop the packaged spices - you can carry them back easily and since they are dried or preserved it’s not a customs issue. Plus the way it smells was worth the trip.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 February 2024
- Therese M2 contributionsGreat place to visit!Guides are so knowledgeable and enjoy answering all our questions. They tell about the country of Belize on the way to the gardens and back. The gardens guides bring you to leaves and flowers to touch and smell as they tell you all about what you see, touch, and smell. Well worth the time.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 28 March 2024
- Amy A16 contributionsFun Tour!We did a fun tour where they pulled a little cart thing behind a tractor. It was great. They stopped all over the farm letting us smell and taste all sorts of plants. Lunch in their gift shop is delicious. I would recommend the chicken, rice and beans. It was our favorite. The chicken panadas were also really good.Visited December 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 December 2024

We went on this tour as an excursion from a cruise ship that docked at Harvest Caye. A large boat takes you from Harvest Caye over to Belize which took around 45 minutes. Then, a bus (very nice bus) takes you from where that boat docks to the spice farm which took around an hour and 1/2. A long drive but the tour guide pointed out a lot of interesting sites and passed around samples of the different leaves that are used for medicinal purposes in that area, A tram takes you around the gardens, which were lovely, and through the spice farm, which was huge, They stopped at picked the leaves, seeds, and fruits from too many to count plants and we were able to sample the smells and tastes of the different spices. The guide explained how long it takes to process many of them and that helped explain why spices cost as much as they do. I actually learned quite a bit. When you get off the tram, you go into the main building and can purchased some bagged spices. They were also serving local type food for lunch which we were able to purchase and eat on the bus ride back to the boat. That made the trip go by faster. We very much enjoyed this excursion.

Our guide from doing a Cockscomb Basin hike recommended doing the drive to the spice farm/botanical garden and I’m so glad he did.
We woke up from Placencia at 5:30a in order to make the hour plus a little drive there and be back in time to still have a full afternoon in Placencia. While we didn’t rush ourselves at the Gardens I must say that we could have easily spent more time there.
Cornelius was our guide and he was so awesome. He led us by tractor cart and stopped often to explain, show and taste. My two kids, 6 and 9, thoroughly enjoyed it too. After the tour we enjoyed an exquisite homemade Belizean breakfast of omelet, sausage and fry jacks plus fresh mango and orange juices. For 5 of us the tour plus breakfast was $240BZ, which equals out to the price that tour companies $120USD l charge WITHOUT meal FOR JUST 1 person and this money goes straight to the farm.
The owner and his wife are very attentive and kind as well. If you have the time, rent a car and go on out there. It’s an easy drive and informative while being fun...not to mention beautiful grounds with chirping birds throughout.

We are so glad that we drove the distance to experience this wonderful place. We were welcomed in the parking lot, given options, ushered into a beautiful hall and shown the bathrooms and ticket desk. We chose the walking tour which was wonderfully done by Carmelio. Walking allowed us to see and experience so much. Carmelio was so knowledgeable and wanted us to see, feel, smell and taste. It was delightful. We added a culinary experience, which was delightful and delicious. This individualize tour and the culinary tour was so very reasonable...$US25 together? We were able to stock up on gifts and souvenirs ( spices and food items everyone would love). The hall had such beautiful wood work, all with trees that have been grown at the farm. We met the owners, an absolutely delightful couple. Their 30 years of hard work have paid off in beautiful grounds, attentive helpful employees, a wonderful tourist spot to learn much and better than that has produced a local industry. We ended our visit with a delicious curry Shrimp lunch and a plate of honey mustard chicken. I’d highly recommend this beautiful place.

This was an amazing tour and highly recommended to anyone who gardens, enjoys plants and/or likes to cook. The tour is great for people of all ages and caters to people with mobility challenges. The beautiful cart is made of wood and pulled by a John Deer tractor that can be boarded by stepping off the porch of the store/restaurant.
The first stop was a garden in the shape of Belize's map and showed each district. The driver spoke of many plants and how they grow and are harvested. Highlights included nutmeg, cinnamon, white and black pepper and vanilla, just to name a few.
They serve lunch and beverages and have a beautiful gift shop that has locally made crafts and harvested spices. This is also a nice venue for weddings and special occasions.

Our trip to Belize Spice Farm was an excursion while on board a cruise. We were offered a delicious cold beverage when we arrived, and pretty quickly got on the tractor tour with a very knowledgeable guide and very helpful driver! The tour was great. I really enjoyed learning about the spices and the lovely flowers. The wagon was comfortable and shaded. We were afforded an up close and personal view of the farm with the driver hopping down frequently to bring back leaves or spices or something for us to smell or taste! I loved it. The tour would be confining for smaller children. There was nice gift shop with the spices for sale, a restaurant and I think a bar!

I was on a cruise, stopped at Harvest Cay, and many of us got sick after our visit to the Belize Spice Farm. You tour the garden in a wagon. It stops and the guide gathers a bunch of a spice and it is passed by hand to the last person in the back. Some you were told to eat. If in the back, you dig out what all the passengers in front of you dug out. And it is stupid. Not like there is a shortage of spice or fruit. Not like disposable gloves aren't available. What do you expect in a poor country? The Spice Farm has adequate resources. But I expect the cruise companies to demand changes to protect the health of their passengers. Cruise ships that dock in Harvest Cay: You are now on notice.

What a great place to visit . Garden and spice farm was just as described . Guide took us on tractor which was loaded from a purpose built platform as shop/ restaurant area and we travelled the grounds . Guide was exceptional . He really knew his stuff . They would just stop and go to the trees and pull off something for us to look at and try . The raw unprocessed chocolate was something I never thought I would try . Many thanks for a great visit

Easy excursion for people with mobility impairments. Interesting and fascinating flora. A must if you enjoy cooking. The tour through NCL included the narrated bus trip. We loved our tour guide, Irma, and bus driver Mr. Clam. Irma taught us so much and you can tell she loves her job and her country. She gave us a delicious Belize banana! The lunch, not included in price, at the spice farm did not offer any vegetarian options other than dessert, so that was disappointing to me. Our guide at the farm was Mike and he was very knowledgeable and allowed us to hold, examine, and taste a lot of leaves and spices. This was a unique experience and would recommend it.

The tour through the spice farm was extremely interesting and informational. The guide gave us leaves and spices to smell and taste as we went. The tour was in a wagon made entirely of teak, and their restaurant, dining tables and chairs, and gift shop are also constructed entirely from native woods grown on site. Even the handrails are not industrial handrails, but are like home handrails with turned spindles. The woods are beautiful--loads of teak, but also rosewood, mahogany, and other exotic colors. They grow their own wood along with the spices. The food was excellent as well. The entire experience was top-notch.

My wife and I where on a cruise and one of our day trips was to the spice and botanical garden in Belize Central America. We took a bus trip from the the dock where the tender dropped us off. Since Belize is a English speaking country our guide was very informative about her country, the government, their money. Upon arrival at the spice and botanical garden we where ushered to the store and Resturant waiting for our tram ride through the gardens. A guide from the gardens explained all the flowers and explained how, nutmeg, cinnamon, coco, pepper, bananas, vanilla, various varieties of peppers. This was a wonder way to see how the spices we use grows. At the end of the tour we where able to purchase spices and hot sauces made on site. We where able to purchase some local food prepared on site. The restaurant and gardens where very clean and reasonable. I would recommend this day trip because it shows a-little of the country side as you go back to the tender.

Got bit several times at the Spice Farm tour
I got bit by a black flying insect several times. We did bring bug spray with us but I forgot to put some on. We sat in the back of the tractor ride and our daughter who was carrying the bug spray sat in the very front while we went through the tour and I kept feeling something bite my ankles I would look down and see a black flying insect. I tried to shake my legs as to not cause a scene and scream and ruin the tour for everyone but it kept coming back to bite. This ruined the trip for me as all I could focus on was my ankles as if I took my eyes off for a minute and I stopped shaking my legs I would get bit again. Now 2 weeks later I have these swollen bites that are uncontrollably itchy. Can someone tell me what bit me so I can look up how to treat the bites?

Hi
Black little (very tiny) insect may be sand fly mostly seen in sandy beach area. We have Dr flies (like horse fly in US) not too much sand fly. It is seasonal.
I think a mild hydrocortisone cream (0.25 %) may help.
If infected ,may need antibiotics. Sorry this happened .How can I make it up to you

We are considering this tour in April - part of the NCL Ship. I read that the tour includes a lot of walking and stairs. Are the 100 steps that the fine print mentions all at once ? We are a group of 4 and one of the ladies has not great knees. Just want to know exactly how much climbing is needed etc. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
