Discovery Bay near Albany is a truly unique attraction.

It is home to Australia's last operating Whaling Station, a stunning Botanic Garden of Australian plants and a display offering visitors a close up experience with friendly Australian Wildlife.

You can choose to explore either our whaling history, or the gardens and wildlife, or the entire site to make a real day of it! Pack a picnic or BBQ lunch and spend a day discovering lots you didn't know about the Great Southern region.

Situated at the tip of the Flinders Peninsula, the heritage-listed "Whale World" site has undergone dramatic change since 2004. Now maximising its location, Discovery Bay is a showcase of amazing regional bio-diversity, yet still remains true to the original whaling display.

Historic Whaling Station guided tours are included with admission, while informative displays are provided to enjoy the gardens and wildlife at your own pace.

We got there at opening time of 9am, after visiting the Gap and natural bridge. I was taken aback at the admission price, but have decided you actually get good value. I am amazed at the movie theatres inside the old whale oil tanks! Impressive, especially the 3D one. The walk over the Cheynes 2 boat was interesting, the old... More

The Cheyne's Bay Whaling Company was rhe last whaling enterprise in Australia. They hunted sperm whales. Thee whaling closed down in the 1970s. Sperm whales have teeth -- very big teeth. You can see a whale skeletonson show at the Discovery Bay Tourism Experience. It must have been very painful for the whale having a harpoon blasted into its body.... More

Hi Jeffry B, Yes, the Cheyne’s Beach Whaling Company was the last whaling station to close down in Australia, hunting Sperm Whales until its closure in 1978. I’m sure everyone would agree that the whaling industry itself was a gruesome one and is definitely something we can now do without. However, it was indeed a crucial component to helping technological... More

Worth the visit just for the ability to climb all over Australia's last whaling ship. There is a lot more to see such as Whale skeleton and 3D movies (although these weren't for us). Volunteers are very helpful also.

Dear Karl B, The whaling ship (Whale Chaser) that we have is definitely worth a visit! It is the only one of its kind in Australia and very nearly the world! However as you mentioned it isn't the only reason to visit Albany's Historic Whaling Station. We have many attractions, including the Gardens and Wildlife Park, and many within the... More

The displays available at the historic Albany whaling station are very enthralling and informative. They have done a great job of maintaining the feel of the old whaling station and combining it with modern technology in interactive displays.

My family had a great time here on a windy day. Very educational for kids & adults, with whale skeletons available for viewing, an informative tour with a 3D cinema, playground for the kids and a cafe to round it off.

The whaling station has created itself into a museum of whaling with whale bones, a brig Amity, and a tour around the different buildings with a guide provided as psrt of ticket.

We thought the admission prices were rather expensive, but this seems to be the norm for W.A. Found the tour with Wayne informative but not really suitable for animal lovers. We prefer to see the whales in their natural habitat and unharmed. To see skeletons up so close was daunting to say the least. Let's hope their numbers increase and... More

Hello T and D Thank you for your comments, we put fair consideration into our entrance price as we have high restoration and maintenance costs to keep the attraction safe for visitors, and as you noted we have researched other attraction entrance prices as well. It's pleasing to read that you enjoyed your tour with Wayne and while the history... More

We visited and whilst expensive, we did a tour and learned a bit about Australian Whaling history and how they had whaled at Discovery Bay. If you are really into whales and whaling history then come for a visit, otherwise we found the natural sights closeby more enjoyable.
