We stayed just outside the waterfall. We stayed at Detian Pubuqing Hotel who got tickets for us for the following day. He said tickets can be brought from Trip. To get to the waterfall you go over the road, past all the shops and go into the big building with people getting on the bus. Go right, towards the men's toilet and there is a left near the entry. Keep walking through the doors to the men who will scan your tickets and you are at the entry to the waterfall. We didn't realise how close we were staying. We went in the morning and since we were so close we wondered if our ticket was for the day-we took it and tried our ticket late afternoon but it didn't work,they are a once only admit. We were here in January which isn't meant to be the best time but the waterfall still looked impressive to me.

We came as part of an organised tour to Guangxi.
The Detian Transnational Waterfalls is so named because it is located in Detian Village, Shuolong Town, Daxin County. The scenic spot is located in the Baili Landscape Gallery of the Sino- Vietnamese border.
It is 57 kilometers away from Daxin County, 95 kilometers away from Chongzuo City and 196 kilometers away from Nanning, the capital of Guangxi Province.
Once you get to the Detian scenic spot, you walk down to the waterfalls! Once your at the water level of the waterfalls, highly recommend that you take a boat ride at $35 Chinese RMB per person. From the boat and shore line you can only see two tiers of the waterfalls. While the boat crosses into Vietnamese territory, you can't get off the boat! When your close to the waterfalls the spray isn't too bad! Good to get up and close to the waterfalls!
Just as you get off the boat, there is a good spot to take photos of the waterfalls from the shoreline. Also there is a section where you can walk up to take a photo alongside one of the border markers, number 836, very popular amongst the Chinese tourists! As you walk up and around the stairs to exit the waterfalls scenic spot, after some monuments along the way, on the roadway to the exit from the scenic area, there are about 5 viewing areas where you'll see all three tiers of the waterfalls! These I believe are the best spots to capture the entire waterfalls area in one photo! These waterfalls are more memorable with the Karst mountains in the background! So mesmerising!

I loved the place, but I couldn´t use the boat to take a closer view, it was rainning and the river was a little bit dangerous, there is a market at the end of the tour and the coffee was delicious.Is better to take food fom your hotel and water also. I recommend to go at morning, as early as you can.

I have searched and found that there are no confirmation that I can cross border in/out China/Vietnam or not? If I am in China and would like to walk in Vietnam side and go back to China side on the same day, so is it possible? Thanks in advance.

I was in Guangxi Province for 9 days. Before the trip, I was wondering if I would have enough time to travel to Nanning and to the Detian Waterfall. After much consultation, I decided to take a bus to Nanning from Yangshuo and thereafter take a bus from Nanning to the China-Vietnam border to visit this world second largest trans-border waterfall.
I was at Yangshuo prior to my visit to the water fall and I departed Yangshuo from the North bus station that head directly to Langdong Bus station in Nanning. The bus ticket cost me RMB 130. If you take the bus from the Yangshuo South Bus Station, the bus will alight you at Jiangnan Bus Station in Nanning. I preferred to alight at Langdong Bus Station because there is a direct bus at the said station that traveled directly to the Detian Waterfall. It is also convenient to travel from Nanning to Guilin by bullet train from Nanning East Railway Station which is only few metro stations from Langdong Bus Station.
The bus from Yangshuo took 6 hrs to reach Nanning Langdong Station. On alighting at Langdong Station, I immediately purchased the bus ticket for the next day to Detian Waterfall. The bus ticket costs me RMB75. The time of departure was 8.30 am.
The next morning, we waited for the bus at Gate 17 and the bus driver punctually departed at 8.30 am. A bottle of mineral water was provided free for every passenger. We were advised to fasten our seat belt before the departure and a short safety screening film warned everyone of the fatal risk of not fastening the seat belt in the event of an accident. I was impressed with the safety measures adopted by the bus company.
We reached Detian Waterfall at almost 2 pm. It appears to me a tiring long journey to our destination. Along the journey, the bus passed by some karst mountainous scenery and you could see acres and acres of banana and corn plantations by the side of the road.
About an hour before the waterfall, we arrived at Daxin Bus Station. I learnt from a staff at Daxin Bus Station that there would still be buses plying from Daxin to Langdong should we miss our current bus back to Nanning. I was informed that the last bus from Daxin to Nanning departed at about 8 pm. I was assured that there are buses plying between the waterfall and this Daxin bus station.
About half an hour from Daxin Bus station, we alighted at the admission office where we alighted the bus to purchase our ticket into the waterfall. The bus driver informed us that there is a discount of RMB10 for our admission ticket if we showed our bus ticket to the counter staff at the admission counter. The admission ticket to the waterfall cost us RMB70 after the RMB10 discount. We continued in our bus journey from the admission office after purchasing the admission tickets. If you fail to purchase your admission ticket at this office, you would not have the tickets to gain access into the waterfall.
We arrived at the entrance to the waterfall after another 30 mins of bus traveling from the admission office. It was a short walk up a slope to the entrance into the waterfall from where the bus alighted us. We were told that the same bus will depart at 3.30 pm sharp which means we only have one and a half hour to visit the waterfall. I subsequently decided not to board this bus and instead take another bus from Daxin to Nanning so that we have ample time to enjoy our visit in the waterfall.
The roaring noise of the waterfall greeted us as we entered into the waterfall scenic area. There were two impressive waterfalls which could see from a distance at the a higher viewing platform near the entrance. As you walk along the walkway, there were several other viewing points and platforms which we took pictures of the waterfall. Halfway along this walkway, there are also stairways leading down to the base where you could see the waterfall from a distance of about 30 m. The descending staircases were well-maintained and we have no issue walking down to the base where we were greeted by the impressive and torrential waterfall. We could feel the coolness of the air surrounding the torrential rain of the waterfall and we were happy as the summer weather was scorching hot.
There were bamboo rafts where you can board at RMB 30 per person and the `taikong' will steer you close near to the waterfall to snap your photos. It was quite crowded along the walkway near to the base of the waterfall. But the view of the waterfall was spectacular and gorgeous. This is my first time seeing such a scenic waterfall. The last time I saw a huge waterfall was at Jiuzhaigou but the Detian Waterfall commands a more dynamic view. There were pedlars from Vietnam who were selling their goods and items along the walkway. We spent about 30 minutes enjoying our walk here before proceeding up the stairway to the border between Vietnam and China.
It was a short walk and there is a clear demarcation signpost stating where the border of Vietnam and China lies. There were also rows of stalls manned by both Vietnamese and Chinese that sold goods and products. My wife bought a packet of Vietnamese coffee and a packet of chopsticks for a gross RMB20. You must bargain for the items you want. We slashed the price by half the offer price and the stallholder agreed with our slashed price without much haggling.
As we walked back to the entrance, we came across horses stationed along the way that offered some fun rides. By the time we were satisfied that we had enough of the waterfall, it was already 4 pm. The earlier bus that we took must have departed. So, when we came out of the waterfall area, we boarded a van to take us to Daxin Bus station. The bus fare costs RMB15. We were surprised that we were the only two passengers on board the van when we departed from the parking area at about 4.30 pm.
Just outside along the road, the van suddenly stopped and up came about 8 to 9 passengers. They spoke in Vietnamese and I suspected if they were illegal immigrants and wondered if the driver was assisting to convey them to Daxin. I was a bit of worried initially but we did not probe further as the driver was rather responsible and he drove us to the bus station immediately after alighting the `illegal immigrants'. Frankly speaking, till today, I am not sure if the driver was part of a human trafficking syndicate. With the booming economy, the income derived from working in China may be better than that in Vietnam and many could have exploited the proximity of the border to cross illegally into Guangxi to work as cheap construction labor for the Chinese developers.
We arrived at Daxin Bus station at almost 6 pm, I purchased the bus tickets to Langdong Bus station at the Daxin bus counter. It cost me RMB52 per pax but the bus only leave at 7.30 pm. It is important to check if the bus depart for Langdong Bus station or JIangnan Bus Station. My hotel is near Langdong Bus Station and I should not take the bus to Jiangnan Bus station.
We have our dinner near the bus station at Daxin before we boarded the bus back to Nanning. There are few eateries near the bus station. It was another few hours back to our hotel at Nanning. By the time we arrived at Langdong Bus Station in Nanning, it was almost 10.30 pm. Luckily, at that late hour, the public buses were still available to fetch us back to our hotel.
It was quite a tiring long journey but I would say it is a worthwhile trip and we enjoyed the scenic view of this dynamic and spectacular world second largest transnational waterfall.

This waterfall, located at ShuoLong Town of Daxin County, was 4th world largest country bounderies waterfall. Went there at Summer, Jun, and the water volume make it really a worth trip. if winter, perhapes water volume will be small.
2 ways to go:
Way A~Join local tour from Nanning, one day trip will cost rmb200 to 210, include transport two ways Nanning~Detian ~Naning, and entrance fee, and also tour guide( but explanation in mandarin), and also one lunch meal at Shuo Long. This trip will includ a visit to Border Greatwall, which built at 1978 during China defense war with Vietnam. 7am depart from Nanning and back Nanning at 8 pm. Nanning to Detian time consume 3 hours. this is easier and save time for those who had limited time.
Way B~ Take local bus from Naning XIXIANGTANG KEYUNZHAN (Terminal Bus Xixiang) at east area of city, head to Daxin, than from Daxin take Minibus to Detian falls. This is rather cheap but time consuming.
4 main spot to observe the falls. One is 5 minits after entrance, which can see the falls from far. 2nd observation spot was a small ladder balcony, and 3 hot spot was taking the bamboo drafts by locals (need to paid RMB 30 per person), and climmb up one hill, to see different of this falls.

after the walk from fall, if possible , try to walk back to main gate. there are mini bus cost each person RMB5, but walking will make you really enjoy the view and spend time here.
After that most of local trip will visit the under ground tunnel, long 2 km and the rest 4 KM, than back to Nanning.

The only logistical challenge to this wonderful place is finding the right bus, and that is only constrained by your language.
I was blown away by the ease of which it was to find my way at every stop, from Shenzhen to Nanning to Daxin to Detian.
From Shenzhen North train station catch a high speed train to Nanning. We purchased our tickets in advance, and arrived approximately 30 minutes before departure. I would suggest more time if you need to pick up your tickets. Second class is comfortable and clean enough for the three hour-odd journey.
From Nanning, catch a subway to Landong bus terminal, and purchase your ticket to Daxin. There are buses departing hourly during winter, when we were there.
This bus ride itself is a journey through changing landscapes. You will notice the fields of rice change to sugar cane as you traverse the plains of Nanning into the weaving foothills of karst mountains. Standing like silent sentinels over centuries-old villages, it is indeed a wonderful sight to behold.
These karst mountains begin in this part of China and stretch all the way down through Halong Bay, Vietnam to Krabi in Thailand, and all the way into Papua New Guinea. A truly incredible geological wonder.
Once you reach Daxin bus terminus you can catch a bus to Detian via Mingshi. It is a slow bus ride, and you'll be travelling with the local villagers, but it is unique and was eye opening for to see, for a short while at least, how the people live in this part of the world.
Rural Guangx is unlike anywhere else in the world, but also draws many similarities with other southeast Asian countries. People are genuinely friendly, and not once did I feel in any way threatened during our four-day trip.
If you get the chance spend a night in Mingshi. The sunsetting on the karst landscape is well worth it.
Detian itself is quite stunning. From memory, it costs RMB80 per person to go inside the restricted territory and then another RMB40 for a bus to the main Detian site. It is no Niagara Falls, but it is nonetheless beautiful. You wont need more than a day here.
We caught a 3pm coach directly from the main Detian site to Nanning, which took roughly 4.5 hours. From my understanding this is the only coach that leaves directly for Nanning in the afternoon.

We struggled to find out how to get to Detain Waterfall so I wanted to write here how we did it.
After reading about the special tourist bus at 8.30 from Lang Dong Bus Station (埌东汽车站）on line 1 metro (station - 埌东客运站) on MinZu DaDao（民族大道）we decided that it's arrival at the waterfall around 2pm and then departure again for nanning at 3.30pm was too short a time to enjoy the waterfall compared to the long journey. Can't say anything about this bus as we didn't attempt it.
So we decided to go by public coach and then minivan. First we went to the "North Passenger Transport Hub＂ at 26 Beida Bei Lu (北大北路26号）and couldn't find any evidence of a bus station. Then we went to XiXiang Bus Station(西乡塘客运站）in DaXue Dong Lu (大学东路）, accessible from the metro station with the same name on line 1 (西乡塘客运站）. Here we found a bus to Daxin (大新）at 9.30am, one ticket 45元. We arrived at 9.27 and were rushed so I'm sorry I didn't get a note of other bus times but I think they are quite regular throughout the day.
The coach (very comfortable) arrived at 12pm in Daxin. From there the coach driver pointed us towards a minivan. Look out for a sign in the van saying Daxin - XiaLei (大新-下雷) OR Daxin - Detain (大新-德天）. We were directed to buy a ticket from the bus station ticket counter for 20元. Here it got a little confused since the ticket office and our ticket said the bus would leave at 1pm, but then as we came out of the shop next door the driver of the van was there and told us to hurry and get in his van - it was 12.20pm， and said Daxin-XiaLei. He drove us to a similar van located down the road a bit with a sign saying Daxin - Detain. We got into the new van which was already nearly full. Not sure if that's a normal van transfer but anyway it worked. My impression is that vans from Daxin to Detain are fairly regular.
The drive took around 1hr30mins with nice views. I had read we may have to transfer bus (and pay a little more) again in Shuolong village (硕龙）, but we didn't. The bus passed the "tourists distribution centre" without stopping and then arrived in Detain Village.
Here we got off. We are excellent Chinese style eggplant and vinegary, spicy potatoe strips at 德天姜食馆 restaurant（Detain Jiang Shi Guan). We ate here 3 times! Although there is a choice of a few restaurants. We checked into a hotel 德天临港宾馆 (Detain Lin Gang Binguan). There were about 4 to choose from, judging from the photos (found on Chinese "Amap" app) they all seem similar. Simple rooms with a TV, kettle and bathroom (squat toilet and shower). We didn't have a reservation, they accepted foreigners and it was 100元 for a twin room, despite the sign that said 150. (There are no restaurants or hotels inside the ticketed waterfall area.)
The next morning we bought our ticket for the waterfall - 80元. We did this at the entrance in Detain Village, right outside the hotel and where the bus had left us yesterday, although some people said they bought the tickets 10km away we didn't encounter this. They only seemed to accept wechat payment, but a lady in the queue bought ours with wechat and we gave her cash. The whole set up is very new, they are still building some parts of the entrance area. Inside the paths are well maintained. From the village it is about 5min walk to see your first sight of the waterfall, and about 20min walk to get to the far end of the site where you are technically in Vietnam, next to some stones which mark the border and a market selling Vietnamese food, cigarettes and coffee. In between, walking on the walkway gives different angles of the waterfall at different heights. You can pay 30元for a ride on the boat to get another view and see the Vietnamese side of the waterfall closer. Unfortunately you can't get to the shore on the Vietnamese side (which is much quieter and less developed than the Chinese side).
I enjoyed the boat ride, even if it's a little expensive for 10mins. Fortunately I was on a boat just for independent travelers rather than squeezed on with a tour group. There were 10 of us instead of the maximum 20. You get a little wet from the spray but you'll dry off.
If you wish you can pay 10元for a shuttle bus to the exit from the Vietnamese Market.
Don't miss the high viewpoint close to the exit gate, close to the end of the shuttle bus route, also accessible from the low entrance path via steep stairs on the right. It's spectacular.
We spent 2.5hours leisurely walking all the way to the Vietnamese market /border stone markers and back again, with the boat trip. We arrived at 9am which was quite busy with tour groups. From 10.30 - 11.30 seemed quieter.
We took the same route back to Nanning. Got on a minivan in the same place we were dropped off, paying the conductor 20元. (you'll see them in the street holding up the daxin - detain sign) at 12.30. Apparently the times for these minivans are 7/ 7.40/ 8.20 /9.10/ 11/ 12.30/ 1.30/ 2.30... And maybe they go later? (I said buses are regular from daxin to detain based on the fact these are the times of the return journeys each van makes everyday) This time it took 2.5 hours (don't know why), we arrived in Daxin at 3.15pm.
From daxin we took the 3.30pm coach to Nanning. The timetable shows regular buses from 7am to 8pm, roughly every hour or hour and a half. We arrived in Nanning at 6.30pm, in time for our overnight train.
We'd read another option could be to take the return part of the daily tourist bus at 3 or 3.30 (the bus mentioned right at the start of my post that leaves Langdong station in Nanning at 8.30am), but we didn't want to be rushed for the train so left earlier.
Really glad we made the effort to go. It was a little challenging but once we'd found the bus station in nanning everything was actually pretty straightforward and people were helpful. We were the only foreigners we saw in two days. If you don't fancy independent travel you could join a Chinese tour which can be bought on taobao if your Chinese is up to it!

We visited the falls in December. It was still very nice. (Dry period is from December till May) You have to buy tickets at the ticket office, about 10 kilometers from the waterfalls. Fee is 80 yuan but the site is definitely worth paying the entrance fee. There is a scenic walking path which allows you to see the falls from several angles. When you go all the way up there are a lot of little stalls. When you walk down the entire market you end up crossing the border with Vietnam. You can't go far but the experience is nice.
You can take a bus from Nanning directly to Detian Waterfalls. (Probably from Langdong bus station or a organized tour if you can find one) This ride will take about 4,5 - 5 hours. I'm not sure when the last bus back to Nanning leaves, but it mabe somewhere around 4.30pm. Make sure you will have at least two hours to spend at Detian Waterfalls. We spend four hours there and could have stayed a bit longer. If you plan to go back on the same day, try to buy your bus ticket back to Nanning upon arrival in Detian or if possible, already in Nanning. Taking a one day trip may be the easiest way to do it if you don't speak Chinese.
If you don't want to do it in one day:
There is a hotel at the spot where you can stay for 250 - 350 yuan a night. You can find some other hotels at englishctrip.com When you look up hotels in Daxin, please note most of these hotels are actually not in Daxin, but close to the waterfalls, which is 1,5 - 2 hours from Daxin. It can be nice to stay there but you have to find out how to get there.
You can also choose to spend the night in Daxin, on the way to Detian Falls. (3 hours bus ride from Nanning) Hotels are a bit cheaper here and there run many busses to and from Nanning, and quite a few to the falls too. We stayed at City Comfort Inn (148 RMB a night) Don't expect much of the city, it's just another Chinese city. If you haven't travelled in China much, it may be nice to look around and experience a bit of Chinese city life. There is a nice square that you can visit. Many Chinese people hang around there and you may end up being the main attraction because not many foreign tourists visit the place.
At the bus station drivers offer to take you to the falls and some other scenic spots on the way. It gives you the opportunity to take pictures at places where the busses don't stop. Don't pay more than 250 yuan for the trip. Not sure if these drivers speak English.
There is a Tourist information Center on the way to Daxin and I think I remember I saw one in the city too. If you don't speak Chinese, I suggest you write down the places where you want to go in Chinese and that you want to take a bus to those places. People are friendly and willing to help, but not many speak English.
You may have to research the logistics a litlle bit before you go but when you eventually get there you'll find that it was definitely worth the efforts!

We hired a car from Mingshi to Detian. Is not easy to find a transport from Mingshi to Detian. There's public bus that comes every two hours. You can wait in front of Mingshi village resort. The bus will not stop for you unless you waived at them. It's all in Chinese so if you can't read than big chance you will miss it. The bus will not take you directly to the waterfall, might be till the building that sells the tickets. From the ticket place to the Detian waterfall gate it's about 10km. You can take a bus from the ticket place to gate, cost you ¥45 per person and the entrance ticket is ¥80. So we thought a whole lot easier for us to hire a car. Our driver Mr. Lu was exceptional. Really nice guy. He didn't speak English but you can communicate with him wit the help of Google translate 😊.
He stopped at the view point between China and Vietnam.
Since we plan to go to Kunming, he told us better not to stay overnight at Detian but after Detian we go to Jingxi and either stay overnight there or take a bus to Baise which is bigger town. He said either we can continue to use his service and pay a little bit more or you can hire another car. Most people that go to Detian either with tour busses or private cars. We didn't see any public busses other than small private minibus to hire.
We decided for Mr. Lu to take us to Jingxi. We are so glad that we did.
We got to Jingxi bus station and took 3:20 bus to Baise. It's about 2 hrs bus ride.
When we arrived in Baise station, we booked our tickets to Kunming. Only one bus from Baise to Kunming, which leaves at 3:40. Baise -Kunming about 8 hrs drive.
So you arrive in Kunming around midnight.
We highly recommend Mr. Lu. He's not only nice, he also charge reasonable price.

Hey MariC780. We like to visit Detian middle of November and we have 7 people in our group. Would you suggested to hire a van or take a bus? The bus ride is 5 hours each way from Nanning?

We took a public bus because it was inexpensive, but if you have a group you should be able to arrange a van. It is 5 hours from Nanning.
