This is an awesome village in Fujian province. It is still not easily accessible, so it retains some medieval charm. But that is changing with transportation options expanding . So, hurry before it became super-crowded. A couple of days is enough to get a full immersion.

If you like luxury this is definitely not for you. However, if you want to experience a truely unique experience this is the perfect place to stay. The beds are hard, the stairs rickety, and you have to cross the stream via stepping stones just to get there. But the rooms all have access to a western toilet, the welcome is warm and the restaurant is excellent and cheap. Be prepared if you order fish to watch the waiter take off his shoes, roll up his trousers, take a net and catch you a fish from the pond. No one speaks English so be prepared to wave your hands a lot, drink a lot of tea and smile.

We have travelled to most provinces in China and always wanted to visit the Hakka houses in Tulou . So we stayed in Xiamen and travelled just for the day to the Tulou area. We hired a drive and guide which is the only way to do it and you can cover many little villages in the area in a day so not necessary to stay overnight there. I was expecting to see some houses and take some photos and get information.... but it was so much more. The countryside is beautiful. The drive is lovely and the green mountains and the fact that there are tulou houses everywhere, there are over 1,400 houses dotted throughout the mountains and villages and it is very interesting to see them integrated into the local areas. There are tourists everywhere so if you take a private car and guide it is so much better. You can stop at small places and walk around and just see the local life. The area is just as interesting and beautiful as the houses themselves. If you are wanting to see Xiamen don't leave without taking a day to this very interesting place. Our guide has a wechat RolandSu , he was very nice and had a very very safe driver.

I took a one day Tolou tour with Apple Travel agency. Everything was very well, starting from the initial communication with the AT agent. The driver came in time He did not speak English, but was friendly and efficient. Shelly, the guide, spoke very good English and was most welcoming. She herself lives in a tulou, and her story was very informal and personal. The lunch was very good. And at the end Shelly invited us for tea in her tulou apartment.

We were a group of 5. The price (760 yuan per person all included) was reasonable.

Strongly recommended.

This place is very hard to get. 4 hours bus drive to Xia yang town then 20minutes taxi drive to the village. The village is beautiful. There are almost no modern buildings ruining the sight but lots of tulous. Tourists are less due to the poor accessibility.
Spending a night is a good experience. There are few guesthouse you can just walk in never stay at yuqinglou guest house which is the only guesthouse in the village on internet. The owner is notorious for his greediness.

I hired a motorbike to bring me to ChuXi tulou, which is a 50 mins ride from HongKeng Cultural Village (洪坑村). This place is less touristy compared to ChengQiLou. I particularly love the surrounding environment, as the tulou clusters are situated nearby a stream against the mountain backdrop.

ChuXi tulou consists of the iconic 3 circular and 1 rectangle tulous. One of the circular tulous is converted into a museum. However, the museum was in restoration state. Though I was allowed to enter the museum, there were construction works going on, with debris lying everywhere. I guessed it will take a few years before the restoration works to be completed. Hence I suggest to skip this tulou and visit other tulou clusters for the time being.

If you are here, strongly recommend to climb the nearby hill to have a great panoramic view of the tulou clusters. The climb is relatively easy, with concrete steps and takes about 10 mins to reach the summit. Great photoshoots from here.

We came here and climbed up a small hill to get a good view of the tulou. Good views from the hill of the entire village.

Unfortunately the main tulou is under renovation and we didn’t get to see many things inside.

Most of the tulou are the same - so if you have visited one it’s almost the same.

If you've time to visit only one Hakka site, make it this one as it has fewer tourists and isn't as tourist-packed. Friendly residents allow you to wander at will and ask questions. Some needed renovation works were in process during our visit. Local tobacco is available for purchase if you're curious (you can also buy the roll-your-own necessary papers).

Chuxi village is the perfect rural idyll, a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. The historic earth buildings here add a great deal of charm and you do feel as if you have stepped back in time. Most buildings are still lived in by generations of the same family, life continues in much the same way as it has always done.

The star attraction is the 600 year old Jiqin Lou, a wonderful relic from time gone by. Functions as a museum now. Located next to the stream, it is very peaceful.

The location is rural and in the mountains so contact your hotel/guesthouse to arrange pick up from the high speed rail station. Nearest is Longyan.

Many earth buildings will serve local food for reasonable prices.

Toilets are available for visitors but expect the old squat style and terribly clean.

I really recommend this place as an authentic earth building visitor experience. I loved the village and it was not over run by tourists or too touristy. It still retains its character.

Give yourself 2-3 hours to explore and don't miss the short climb to the viewing platform. Very much worth it!

Chuxi Village with a total of five tulous (four round ones and a rectangular building), one of them a (simple) museum. These adobe buildings, the oldest one dating back to the 15th century AD, don't see many visitors. You can therefore find enough time to visit them - as well as the small village as such - without the usual crowds. It is a good place to learn about the Hakka people and culture - and all this in a lovely setting surrounded by rice paddies and green hills. We recommend spending at least one night in the tulou hotel/hostel (Yuqinglou Hotel) and get to know the area better.
