Marwood Hill Garden, Garden Tea Room and Plant Nursery

Welcome to this very special private garden tucked secretly away in a Devon valley.

Covering some 20 acres, with three beautiful lakes, this tranquil garden will provide a day of both inspiration and relaxation for the whole family. From the moment the first snowdrops poke their little noses through in spring there is so much to see throughout the year until the rich autumnal tints and shiny fat berries of autumn.

The magnificent display of blossom from the massed camellias and rhododendrons is followed by a stream of colour in the bog gardens, as carpets of primulas and iris in all the colours of the rainbow, burst forth. The National Collection of Astilbes follows in a foamy symphony of pastel hues and hydrangeas on the hillside, like French petticoats in sky and lilac, sparkle in the sun.

We garden with wildlife always in our minds and providing habitats for them is extremely important. Tucked away around the gardens are piles of branches and mounds of leaves home to lots of lovely bugs and beasts!

Kingfishers are regular visitors to the lake and the areas of rough grass provide both food and hibernating site for the young of many butterflies and moths.

These gardens are a little bit off the beaten track so a sat nav is really necessary to find them, but it is well worth the journey as they are so lovely. There were lots of beautiful magnolia and camellias in bloom when we visited, although as it is in a steep sided valley the rain of the previous night... More

We visited at the end of March. The gardens had only opened for the season a few days before. We really enjoyed our visit, but the gardens were not at their best.

Our visit today was idyllic. The Magnolias and Camellias are at their best; there are still numerous daffodils and many of the trees are coming to leaf. Blossom of every colour abounds and even on a busy Mothers' Day (when beautiful camellias were presented to women customers in the Tea Room) there was still peace and tranquility to be found... Thank you so much for kind words. Mother days was a very busy one for us and we love to spoil the Mums a little too. The garden is very special and even on a busy day you can always find a place to sit and enjoy the bird song and peace. More

Marwood Hill Gardens has to be the finest most idyllic gardens I have ever been to. 20 odd acres of beautiful trees, shrubs, all created by the late Dr Jimmy Smart. A visit here is highly recommended.

We went there on the recommendation of my Mum and weren't disappointed. If you are looking for inspiration and variety this is where you should visit. We found there to be plenty of seating areas to just sit and contemplate which in turn enabled us to really look at the trees as we are developing our garden (on a much... More

Marwood Hill Gardens is one of the most beautiful gardens in the UK. It isn't huge, which gives it a very natural, homely atmosphere. The gardens are like a painting in all the seasons - the Autumn colour is gorgeous, with the trees reflected in the lake. There are several well-positioned seats throughout the gardens, highlighting many beautiful aspects throughout... More

Gardens started by local doctor, Dr Smart. Opened to the public and a great place to take the family to wander around the gardens feed the ducks etc, good for a picnic.

I've been going to Marwood (or Dr Smart's) most years since I was a child. Now living in Scotland, I still manage to get down every 2 or 3 years. I was in Devon for our half-term and hadn't thought to check opening days as we've never had a problem visiting; paying via an honesty box if the kiosk wasn't... More

Sorry that you were disappointed. We did advertised our October opening times well in advance as we have major work being carried out on the lakes as well as tree surgery. Glad you enjoyed your visit to Filleigh and hope you will visit Marwood sometime this season. We are open daily from the 20th March until 30th September and then... More
